Re: 70' GMC "Walter"

So the PO's glasspack exhaust was getting really annoying and the passenger side just fell off yesterday so we did a quick temp rehash with some old Flowmasters I had laying around and some tubing to get us by until the vortec goes in. Anyways we experimented a little since Ive always wanted to do this but haven't had the guts to cut a hole into perfectly good metal. We routed the exhaust up and over the frame rails just in front of the rear tires and out the bedside. Figured since we have a nice bed to fix up it wouldn't hurt to hack into this one. Sounds good too, and you can actually carry on a conversation in the cab while driving down the road.

Picked up this little gem for ol Walter, preliminary measurements tell me it shouldn't need much fabrication to make it fit. It's out of an '02 chevy truck. My favorite feature is of course that it's leather but also the arm rest/cup holder.

I'm no stranger to fab'n seats where the don't normally belong, I put this middle row seat out of a '07 tahoe in the back of my jeep.

Yea it's the back seat got it for a good deal so I figured why not. But after playing around with it last night and test fitting it in my parts truck its going to take a lot of fab to work, but I'm up for the challenge got to fire up the welder for this one stay tuned it's going to get messy.

Made some more progress on the seat frame. I used the old sliders from the original bench seat welded them together with some scrap channel I had laying around.

http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...pscslbegji.jpg
Chopped and hacked up the new seats frame, notched it to fit low on the sliders.
http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...psb2jq48cr.jpg
Mocked it up in the truck.

Re: 70' GMC "Walter"

looks like it is fitting in well for sitting... how is the seat back of the drivers seat going to lean forward with the steering wheel blocking the seat bottom folding completely vertical?

In my CC with those seats, the seat back wont fold down until the bottom is almost completely up.

Re: 70' GMC "Walter"

I'm not sure how I'm going to make it work, it would be cool if I could retain the seat bottom being able to fold forward,(Awesome storage idea) but it's not necessary, plus I have a smaller grant steering wheel. The folding forward of the back..... well if I can get the bottom to sit down a little lower thus making it sit below the folcrum of the backrest I should be able to get it to fold over the top of the bottom. Sure there might be a little gap between the two but it will allow me to set the bottom a little lower than it is currently( 1" higher than stock) and hopefully have a nice comfortable stance. Of course this is all theory since I have no idea what I'm doing lol.

Finished fabing brackets for the seats, and installed 3 point shoulder belts out of the motor donor van. ol Walter is uptown now!!. Just need to get the door skins painted grey and new armrests to match. I'll probably dye the belts grey to match too.

Re: 70' GMC "Walter"

Thanks it took a bit of work to get the seats to fold but I think I got it. I'll have to compile my photos and post them on here of what I did, but for now I'm enjoying the comfort and elegance of leather. I may need to buy heaters for them though. for them cold mornings on my way to my hunting spot.

Yea it's an acquired taste, like a fine wine..... leaves a bitter taste in your mouth at first but then you start to like it. Next thing you know your siping with your pinky up, using words like Anencephalous, and using valet parking.

Re: 70' GMC "Walter"

Slapped some grey paint on the gauge bezel took it all apart and cleaned it plus replaced two burnt out bulbs. Then threw some gloss black on the column . it's funny how I always said that the PO's finger nail polish red paint job (bought it from a woman ) was going to be the first thing to go and I ended up living with it for over a year. No more red in the cab now.
I don't like how it looks purple in the picture though!!

Re: 70' GMC "Walter"

So I finally got around to getting some more pics. I was only able to get the passenger side to be able to fold and tumble but that's OK since it would of been useless for the drivers side to do so. Either way it's works pretty slick and I'm going to build an under seat cabinet that can be used as extra storage. I'll let the pics do the talking.
So the passenger side of the setup can't slide forward like the driverside can, but I see no reason it will need to. The legs of pivot is mounted solid to the floor.

Thanks bud, all and all I wished I would have held out for a front set of seats out of the same era of truck, just for the way the front mounts plus the ability to adjust with power and all those other creature comforts but these are still awesome seats and it worked out pretty well. now to get that vortec in...... but of course after hunting season:metal:

Re: 70' GMC "Walter"

So the truck had been cutting out on my a few times it will sputter (like it lost spark) well it did it to me again today so I pulled over. this time it flat out died, but it would fire right back up but die immediately so this time after I got it started I watched it and the fuel filter (clear plastic one) got really empty dang near no fuel in it. I tapped the fuel pump a few times and it sputtered more fuel into the filter. So tonight I replaced the pump with a brand new ac delco unit, hope that remedied the problem and won't leave me stranded this weekend in the middle of the wilderness.

If you have not checked yet pull the sending unit/pickup out of the tank and see of the sock has collapsed and disintegrated, also inspect for rust, also check and replace the small length of hose directly below the tank under the cab, be sure to use fuel line.
