Looking sharp man! Can't wait to see it painted! :metal:

When I did some painting on my truck for my mirrors and stuff my dad suggested using coat hangers because I never would of thought it, made it look like I had my own little paint shop.

So when you plan to be finished with priming and painting? Sometime this week, and start putting everything back together next week?

yeah i just used bailing wire to hang pieces up.
i will paint it all tomorrow... then i'll start bolting stuff back together until i get it back to a rolling chassis...

then i'll start the drive down the long body work road, lot's of sanding and priming up ahead

Re: My new project 86 Silverado

ordered upper control arm cross shafts from rock auto ... the originals were damaged...

probably going with Mcgaughy's 2.5" drop spindles, may go lower will decide soon

looked at auto parts places today (auto zone, advance auto, rock auto), and to replace all the brakes up front...rotors/bearings/seals/calipers/hardware/pads will be way more than 250.00

Mcgaughy's front brake kit is only 256.00 at http://grunionfabrication.com so if I can't find a whole brake kit cheaper than that, i'm going with it

The joys of sanding and priming  honestly I wont lie, yeah it might have been quite the pain in the butt to do, but nobody can ever say I didn't sand down and prime my own truck. Would I do it again, thought about it, but I probably won't

Just be patient with it man take your time, and if you have electric sanders definitely use one, if you don't have one I suggest go buy one, trust me I handed sanding the front fender of my truck then I found we had a sander, yeah let's just say once I found that sander I haven't turned back. We actually have 2 now one for me and 1 for if I have a friend that helps me.

Re: My new project 86 Silverado

yeah, I have an air DA 6" sander, and a 1/4 sheet electric sander.
damn DA sander takes a crap load of air, i may buy me a electric DA sander, quieter and i don't have to listen to that damn compressor run constantly..

77ChevySharkBite 04-08-2013 05:52 PM

Re: My new project 86 Silverado

Definitely man! I know I love my 2 electric sanders work like a charm, the thing I'm not looking forward too is when I get my new bed and have to sand that down....but oh well it's going to have to be done either way.

turned the frame over, and primed the top side
primed the rear diff housing
re-primed the cross members/engine mount brackets
primed the springs

didn't have enough gumption to actually paint. will do that tomorrow for sure.
that way i'll have the rest of the week/weekend to put the control arm bushing in, etc. etc. and be ready to start hanging parts.
slowly but surely...

That's looking real purty. I wish I could do that! I'm laying under the truck sanding and painting my frame. Having everything off and accessible would be really neat. Keep up the good work! :)

If you don't mind me asking. What is the difference in the three spray guns you bought and how much were they. Did you buy one for primer and another for paint? Do they have different tips. Just curious why you bought three guns. Educate me if you would. I am hog dumb when it comes to this area.

Re: My new project 86 Silverado

Re: My new project 86 Silverado

anyone know if this flip kist absolutely requires a C notch??

Re: My new project 86 Silverado

it might not be of much help, but i've heard of people removing the bump stop in the rear, not sure if that was just to drop the rear 5" or 6"

mooseknuckles 04-10-2013 10:51 AM

Re: My new project 86 Silverado

you can get away without using a c-notch with a flip kit if you remove the bumpstop and bracket...as long as you don't haul too much you'll be o.k.

Jonboy 04-10-2013 10:51 AM

Re: My new project 86 Silverado

If you are doing a flip in the rear, you absolutely need to remove the bumpstop, or it will be hitting constantly, and ride like doo doo. If you are doing a C notch, the bracket gets cut out.

those bolt in c-notches just seems like it would make the rear of the frame flex at that point...

flipped the cab over to work on the bottom, the PO butchered the tunnel, I assume to change to the TH400 that came with it.
I need to buy a grinder, a DA or hand sanding is not going to cut it...

will be installing LCA's tomorrow...

like I said before, I have both a 10 bolt, and a 12 bolt rear... trying to decide which one to go with since i'm waiting on the flip kit... decisions, decisions :)

Re: My new project 86 Silverado

What's the gears in the 10 and 12 bolt? Posi?

Looking good man, sucks the PO tore the tunnel up to only make it harder on you, but think of the positive something else you get to learn for experience :metal:

Re: My new project 86 Silverado

thanks

Both are 3.08's unfortunately no posi...
the patch tunnel has enough overlap so I can seal it, and bolt/screw it back down to cover the hole. never know when I may need to get at the transmission or something... but who knows, i may weld it back together we'll see when I get to that point

Re: My new project 86 Silverado

Well I have a 12 bolt in mine with 3.42 gears and I love it, people have asked which is better out of the 10 or 12 bolt and from what I've seen it's gone both ways. So I think it's more of person preference more than anything.

77ChevySharkBite 04-14-2013 11:13 AM

Re: My new project 86 Silverado

More than enough lol! Supposedly from what a friends dad of mine told me is that back when our trucks were built they had a heavy duty rear end, with 8 leafs on each I think the typical leafs on a truck of our generation was 10 or 12 total but as you can tell there's 16 lol on the 12 bolt

naphtali5725 04-14-2013 08:30 PM

Re: My new project 86 Silverado

since i have a 10 bolt that came with my truck, and a spare 12 bolt out of a Burb, I have been doing some reading...

it appears that a truck 10 bolt has a larger pinion than a truck 12 bolt, a car 12 bolt is stronger than a truck 12 bolt. so basically a truck 10 bolt is built stronger than a truck 12 bolt...will have to keep researching to see if it is worth the swap. if the truck 12 bolt is weaker, then i'll keep my 10

anyone confirm this?
