WOW THANKS FOR BRINGING THIS THREAD UP!!!! hopefully before to long i can piece mine together and make my tow pig for my 4x4.....i have the cab, front clip, lwb frame, BBC, 4speed, 411 gears in the rear end, front rims just like the green truck i have pictured but powder coating a crome color. just gotta clean everything up and put together :waah:.

keep the PICS coming!!!

QUICK QUESTION--- what is a good tire combo you find fitting for towing with? and do you think me using 411 gears in the rear are o.k.?
my 4x4 that i will be towing to events will weigh in at about 9'000lbs-10'000lbs. i am going to do an over the axle bag job, custom built square tubing rear frame, with a 1.5" ladder bar set up, beefy hyme joints. i am wanting to do something like these pics below for the over all setup---but not body dropped. basically bagging and letting it air out when setting, the frame might lay and might not....(not too worried about that).

could i get some tire size's and i can play with what will fit when the truck airs out....also anyone care to PM me about step side fenders they might not need or know of ???:smoke:

Its hard to find a good project early 1 ton because they were usually beat like a rented mule ....and parted out to build more C/10's ....good luck though....I know there out there.

But if I was going to do another I would just take a C/20 ( cheap and plentiful) add a dually rear and later model 73-87 C/30 spindles/and ball joints (they will bolt right to 63-70 control arms). Other than that, build a bed of your choice, add clearance lights and the C/30 emblem......most would never know it started life as a C/20.

I saw a 4 wheel drive dually, it had duals in the front and the rear! I always wondered how the thing handled. Anyone seen the one I'm talking about?

I totally agree about the headache board (if you actually use it as a work truck)

Here is the difference, my truck only hauls one thing....."ASS".... so I guess I don't need it.....................

BTW thanks for the compliments It means alot to me and everyone who puts in those long weekends to finish their rides...........Rushnbobo................:metal:

Rush, you're right, it's a C20, and I'm waiting for it to grow up to a C30, but it seems reluctant. But since you brought it up....(There's three things that an old man can't help talking about, his grandkids, his dog, and his truck :))
Here's a couple of a one-ton-wannabe.........

:chevy:

The way u see it now it measures 6'6 x 8'
-Since this is the "short" wheelbase version 1 ton it came with a 7' x 9' bed exactly like Tim Meyers SLOMOTION in this thread ..if u look closely you can see from the side that his bed overhangs the axle 12 inches more than mine.
Since he had committed himself to preserving a original appearance due to the rarity of his truck leaving the bed in its original proportions was smart. If I started with his truck I would have built it the same ...even the 292 inline!!

My goal from the start was a "restomod" so I looked at building more of a street rod appearance. The bed was definatly not going to work with my vision in its original proportions.....so first order was to reduce the bulky overhang, and i settled on 8 ft. by cutting out 12 inches and welding back together. The frame was now sticking out the back by around 6 inches so more cuttting.

Now it's close but still didn't look quite right.....it was the width, overhanging the tires .....more cutting. Took a section (about 6 inches from the rear center) and tacked it up....stood back and ...that was it!!!!!.....ALMOST

Look at Tim's bed height....and compare....mine sits about 2 inches lower on the frame which helps make it look like it's not floating to high above the frame....this was done with removing all the oak framework and building up the structure with channel iron in its new lower position.

This is an original Chevy bed (look for the rounded corners and detail in the bed sides). It did not come on all 1 tons trucks BTW ...it could also be ordered as a chassis only which is also done today on 1 ton and up trucks. Before '73 Chevy did not build a fleetside bed w/fender extensions as is common place today as 1 tons changed into dual purpose commercial and personal use.

Pre '72 1 ton and larger were considered commercial vehicles hence no reason to fab up a fleetside dually. One exception was camper coach builders in which the chassis was sent to another factory to add the camper back ...pretty rare ...there's at least 1 on the forum.

Ok thats all my secrets........almost.........this is what u get when u ask me a question ....ten times more info than u probably wanted .....thats just me...

I like it, I like it alot!

What is the total weight you can put on it?

I have been looking for one of these, but I never have found out the GVW.

I keep buying old trucks, so it would be cool to go pick one up with an old "matching" truck.

Here's mine. It has 57k on the chassis but sat for years with a bent diff. The po replaced the diff with a 14 bolt and the engine had siezed from sitting so a newer small block went in. It was originally a grain truck but the box and hoist was removed. The PO had a deck laying around so I picked it up too. I advertised looking for a scissor hoist and here in farm country I had no shortage of replies. A hundred bucks later I had all the parts I needed. The PTO pump was still in the chassis. I use it around our acreage and here it is set up for hauling our water.
