Re: 86 GMC, Porterbuilt Mild front and rear
Turning out super clean! Was hoping to see the smaller sport mirrors on this one but it looks great. I like the seat. Black door panels, trim, & dash?
|
Re: 86 GMC, Porterbuilt Mild front and rear
The mirrors were one of the tougher decisions. The ones I had were in good shape so I just reused them. The interior is all black.

Re: 86 GMC, Porterbuilt Mild front and rear
You did a ton of work in a pretty short amount of time and it looks great. I like the combination of stock and custom features. Also, echoing 91short -- thank you for serving. One of my best friends is career Marine Corps. You guys sacrifice a lot.

Re: 86 GMC, Porterbuilt Mild front and rear
Why do you think the extreme drop member would be easier and involve less fab?
|
Re: 86 GMC, Porterbuilt Mild front and rear
I just trimmed the inner part of the factory tub and bolted them back in place. plenty of clearance with the amount I raised the bed.
slotard - I went with the Mild version because I was under the assumption that there was no modifications to the cab necessary. With my setup I had to fab a tunnel from front to back for drive shaft clearance. My main issue was the steering linkage. The stock column sticks out fairly far and causes the first joint angle to be a little extreme. Other then that, the install was pretty straight forward. So since I had to do all the modifications anyway, I think the extreme version would have been easier for the simple steering connections and header fitment. |

How did you connect your first u-joint at the steering column? Did you cut a piece of steering shaft stock and mount it in the residing location, and then mount the u-joint to that? |

Did you modify or what u-joint did you use? |
Re: 86 GMC, Porterbuilt Mild front and rear
I believe you need a 1” dd to 3/4” dd u joint. I bought all of my gear through Porterbuilt. I did end up getting some extra u joints because of the geometry of the shafts.

I didn’t know bonspeed was still making wheels. Which level kit did you go with? The extreme is straight forward with the steering linkage.

Re: 86 GMC, Porterbuilt Mild front and rear
I got the extreme. Ordered is several years ago when I had a truck. Then 2 years ago I ordered my Accuair kit from PB. Then sold the 85 truck because I inherited a 84 suburban from a family member who passed. Last year I ordered my PB rear extreme kit to fit the burb. Nate put together parts from a 67-72 and squarebody for it.
My goal it to install the rear once I get the front completed. Can't get my rear axle all finalized, pinion angles and what not till I get my wheels. Whenever that may be. |
