No other payments of any kinda, no credit cards, no car note, just the house and bills.

We alos budget everything before the pay checks hit, everything has an allowance. Even "money for whater' is budgeted. But onces its gone. its gone.

Go into printer/copier repair. Thas what i've been doing for the last 8 years. Its all the fun of tearing stuff apart and fixing it, without all the grease and 100 degree temps of working on transmisions. I'll take AC, cute receptionists and golf shirts over bubba at the parts store, smashed fingers, and sweating all day. The pay is great too. Every business in the world has to print something. Pretty much recesion proof.

Re: How do you afford it?

Right now I'm going to school for Petro Engineering, and this summer I'm working the rigs as a floor hand for about 6000 a month gross pay. It is a really sucky job, but it pays good and my dad's the safety coordinator so I don't have to worry too much. It's good money, I'd just rather get my degree and make more money and do less. My truck has been a combination of excellent deals and extra parts from my brother. The cab and front end are near perfect, just need paint, and the box I just need to buy bedsides for. So for the cost of paint(my dad self-taught himself to paint), seat cover, bedsides, and rhino-lining, mine will be done. About 3000 total into an extremely nice truck. 400 for the truck, 250 for the 396/th400, 1000 for paint, etc, 1000 for bedsides, and a few hundred for misc parts. Deals are out there and you just need to wait your turn, it'll happen. And as far as school goes, I had a rough first year, but I learned from my huge list of mistakes and know what I NEED to do next year to make ends meet and stay out of trouble. Nothing like life experience!

Re: How do you afford it?

Oh yeah, my gf is completely supportive of my collecting habits(trucks and toys-actual toys not motorcycles, etc.). She is working two jobs this summer to save up money for US next year. And I won't lie or mislead, my parents have totally been there for me when I needed it. They bought me a 98 chevy silverado when I was 16 or 17 and that's what I use for transportation. It has 113000 miles, but it runs good and has had a lot of service work so it continues to run good. So between me and my gf not having any bills during college besides rent and utilities(got an academic full ride), i can stretch out a summer's worth of work to last 7 months so I don't have to be distracted when I need to focus on more important stuff, like petro classes and sciences.

LOL.......I'd forgotten Dave's gazelle intense story. Thanks for the reminder!

As another of the old geezers on the forum, there is no better advice than getting the education and staying out of debt. Dave Ramsey is an excellent place to find a plan. For my truck, it isn't a show truck and never will be but its paid for and all parts are as they go on. I have a mechanical repair shop so I do get parts and labor much cheaper but my stuff is always the last to be worked on. I do the body and paint work myself and thats really about all my truck needs for now. Last piece of advice........life goes by very quickly and none of our toys means anything when it's over. Make sure the priorities are right and the fun stuff will fall into place later in life. Great post, by the way.

Dave Ramsey has taken more stress from my family than any one single change in the last five years. We can afford to do more than just my truck.

Lessee... My wonderful hard working wife is a teacher (she's soaking in the tub after a bad day...):dnd: I am a union sheet metal worker. My truck is paid for by scrap $$$, poker winnings, overtime, and a savings account appropriately named toy fund. I figure it is cheaper than drinking, drugs and stripper joints. Yes, stay in school, but I would say do at least 4 years if you can stand it. I have an associates in mechanical technology and wish I had more. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to see what all the buzz is about with Dave Ramsey!

I'm must glad to find some other people that don't think i'm crazy for living the way i do.

Again sorry to highjack, but when your on a budget, you can't afford to have TWO different threads going on. LOL...

Just goes to show me the charactor of guys that have interest in these trucks.

I think the 'afford it' comes from priorites. Family first, then everything else. Its easy to get a loan *or was a few months ago* or max out some credit cards to pay for a show quality truck. But the hands on building and fabing has replaced turning the soil or digging for a man to have a place and be a man. How can you put a price on that.

I'm young so i'm thing about what values i need to get young ones.I'll stop before i get too off and then become the wierd guy. *probably too late*

Carlin said it best "the continued pussification of the american male" its gotta stop. but that can be halted by a realy nice 69 swb with a 396.

I am a stay at home dad. So I beg and whine for truck money.

But I am also perfectly content with my 68 looking like a junked out beater as long as it'll get me to Home Depot and back.

i went to a tech school for welding and was fortunate enough to land a job in aerospace....the key thing for me is not to go out for lunch, and really realize what i spend my money on!!! i dont smoke and barely drink now, and i just pay off my bills in the beginning of the month and whatever i have left over i can spend on my truck or the girl, but i found a loop hole in that cause i bought her a project truck:metal: anyways, goto school because you'll kick your own ass when ya gotta work 80hrs a week just to afford your bills, nevermind toys. i do work atleast 60hrs a week, but thats because i have a truck to pay for....and im 25 and i own a house,so its possible to be able to afford what ya want...it's just how hard ya want it

Engineer/investor/entrepreneur.

I buy and sell just about anything. If I think I can make a profit off of it, I'll buy it and flip it. The parts that I make and sell, that money usually goes into the truck. Pretty much anything that comes off the CNC table and gets sold goes into the truck account. Yeah, account. I have a checking account JUST for truck parts! :haha:

Sexytary for a group of pathologists. Work 50-70 hours a week. Hubby owns his own business (his side jobs pay for his fishin' trips). We have a deal with the son (who will own the truck when he's 19) that for every dollar he earns and puts towards the truck, we'll match it. BUT he has to be out there wrenching on it the same # of hours his dad or I are out there. Kinda like the "Habitat for Humanity" of Chevys. If not, I'll have me a mighty nice '67 K10 in a year. ;)

Re: How do you afford it?

Hmmm..money for my truck..well its anything thats left over after all the priorities are paid...and lately that hasnt been much. Plus the fact that I seem to keep buying "projects" that I can't seem to pass up. (latest is a 63 Biscayne).

I look at it this way...I do what I can, when I can. Try to find parts cheap..swap meets..ect. I cant afford to just buy a truck and then throw $20-30K at it..and be done...so for me, part of the enjoyment is doing most (if not all) of the work myself!! (saves a lot of money).

I figure, if I hold on the my "projects" till I'm old enough to retire and really work on them...so be it! After all..they don't make em like that anymore. Just keep em from rusting...lol.

That is my favorite quote from the whole thread.

My job/pay is contract based working in I.T. It's like seasonal work. Sometimes I need to make 8 months pay last 12. I try to pay cash and if I use a credit card, pay it off every month. Even with pretty good pay and only 1 car payment (out of 5), my truck has only gotten further from completion (Cannibalized for my son's project). I set a threshold on my savings that I don't want to dip below just to have the 3 months reserve and I haven't been able to do much besides use any surplus to take care of all those unexpected expenses that come up. It's still on the back burner until I get closer to being debt free. Plus, I'm using what extra I can set aside to improve my shop so I'll have a comfortable place to work on it.

Re: How do you afford it?

I get $12.50/hr 3-5 hrs a week, at my local public access channel. Good pay for a fun and easy job, and it pays for what the rents don't, like parts for my Tahoe. I am definitely lucky that my parents pay gas and ins, etc, but i know what work is and i work all summer on the farm, and this summer i will work at the pub. access, so i'm not a spoiled little rich kid, like some i know. My dad is the Director of Treasury at a major hog company, and he has worked a long time, and i respect him and my mom's dedication to our hog farm, family and community, and i know how to work and succeed, all life lessons from my parents.
