Well I decided to buy new doors and inner fenders. I haven't skimped yet on this thing why start now. The only thing left to buy are the bumpers, new correctly spaced steel rims and maybe a ford 8.8 for the rear with limited slip and disk brakes. Should be finished by the end of this year I hope. Paint and all.

The truck is lookin great.Did you get the rx7 going?I drove a buddies 2nd gen rx7 with a ls1 and 6 speed the other day.You are looking forward to a good time with that thing.

Arekusu 03-17-2011 04:01 PM

Re: Old School Hot Rod Truck (1964)

Yup Rx7 is just about 100%. I have to work out a vibe at speed.. which I think is a rear wheel bearing or the diff.. either way, I have both as replacements. Then a speedo install.. It's already registered and insured. So that for a while will become the daily driver and the truck (Penny) will come off the road for the final bit of work. Even with the vibe, mustangs just don't have a chance with that cars power of the LS1, T-56 gearing and diff at 4.10 and the weight of 3000lbs with me in it. It screams. I'm happy it has good brakes. :)

Cool truck!

So you live in Mary Esther and from the sticker on your back window, you work on the Osprey? If so, PM me. I need to see if you know an old roommate of mine from my USAF days. He lives in Mary Esther and works on the V-22 program.

I used the engine mounts from a 91 burb when I installed my TBI 350, it moved the engine forward and down which meant that my 700r4 and all of the engine electronics did not interfere with the firewall. I was pure dumb luck on my part but I tell everyone else I planned it that way. Kieth

this first picture shows the difference in the 91 burb engine mounting brackets, (the same as a 87 pickup)

This shows how we notched the frame and drilled other holes in the burb front donor crossmember to make the engine sit 1.5" farther forward, and 3/4" lower---clearances were fine and everything cleared the firewall.

Just click on next whre it says 97 of 416 to see the progression of the motor mounts.

Here is a shot of the cab on the chasis----the engine, the distributor, the cruise control------everything cleared just fine.

Well, heading home soon from the desert.

Plans -

Order Moser Ford 9" 35 spline axles with wave loc posi

Install rear fuel tank

Remove old 350 and install 454.

Paint engine bay prior to install then after paint truck.

Finish truck.

The Rx7 in my daily driver now. I need to do a diff swap though to an IRS 8.8 so it can keep up with the LS. After I get the truck finished, I'll do a light rebuild on the LS to ensure good rings, bearings etc. For now I'm focousing on the truck.. not much left.

The 454 has to come apart though so I can add all the parts from summit to it.. like the cam.. new rod bolts and verify the tolerances on the bearings.

Re: Old School Hot Rod Truck (1964)

Those valve covers will hit the firewwll if you install the engine in the original location. I have those same valve covers on the 454 in my Suburban, but I moved the engine forward 2", and they clear the firewall by about 1/4" on the passenger side.

My question is then...

What about clutch linkage (z-bar etc.) and bell housing mounting? Or are most people converting to a blow proof bell housing?

Capt. Fab, thanks for the heads up on that.

A big block with a manual trans in one of these trucks is going to be a challenge making a mechanical clutch linkage. It can likely be done, but if it were me, I would convert to a hydraulic clutch.

Everything is getting stripped down bare, and the backs of all panels are getting self etching primer followed by rubberized undercoating... sadly, I've found a few rust spots I didn't know about.. not to happy about that.. Hopefully I'll have that worked out by the end of this weekend. Then final primer and paint.. weather cooperating.

deployed again.. but will be painting the cab hopefully soon when I get back. But I was thinking, what do you guys think of putting a vintage air system in the truck? About how much should I pay for a kit / are there any alternatives?

Also, what's the best way to do line locks for drag racing? One front wheel, both front wheels? Can anyone recommend a proven part / system?

Re: Old School Hot Rod Truck (1964)

Hi HeartRod, wow that is a great build thread. As of now my Rx7 is taking up some of my time as it's my daily and I needed to install the 8.8 ford differential in it to make it more reliable. Soon though the truck will be back on deck with a guide coat some blocking and touch up filler where needed. Then paint. Hopefully this guy in town working my 454 will discover the spring aligners he's looking for. He's pretty much retired from machine work , but took on my job as he doesn't do many big blocks now. I'm glad he did.

How do you like the blower on the 68? I haven't made it through your build thread yet but I'm trying to go through the whole thing.

Things left for the 64:

Decide on what to do about the cruddy 1960 hood. It's ok, but will never be straight.

Guide coat, block, fill, prime, block, paint cab.

Figure out how to tub my bed correctly for the 15X10 rims and also figure out what width axle I need.

Paint bed, reassemble truck

Install engine and drive it.

As my neighbor would say, getting closer.

can we get some more info on the install of the nv 3550 . what did you have to do for tail shaft . how did ya like it . were did ya find it and pics if possiable . :chevy:

Arekusu 06-22-2012 06:26 PM

Re: Old School Hot Rod Truck (1964)

Geeze.. I did that install in one day .. about 3 years ago. What I remember is that the shifter on the tail housing was under the bench seat. It had a mid shift kit you could buy but they are more expensive than the TKO mid shift kits.. and the shifters don't interchange for the tail shaft between TKO and 3550. To get mine to fit I hogged out the mounting holes to make it fit to the stock bell housing. Everything else was good to go, no issues that I can remember. Just a different yoke. It's just like doing a TKO really except you have to mod the mounting holes to Chevy. TKO came from the 3550. I got hung out to dry on that trans though as it wouldn't go into 3rd, so I bought someones problem. I later sold it to a friend who rebuilt it and sold it.

Now I cant decide on which hood and grill in this color (see step pic above). (help me out and vote in the poll!)

I'm leaning towards the 60-61 hood and grill. Problem is I'll have to get a fiberglass hood, as my other one is a bondo nightmare.. Here's a pic for reference. And next the next pic (should be) a 64-66 hood and grill, which I still have in steel. I kind of thing the turquoise looks better on the earlier hood.. what do you guys think? Both grills would still be white, (as well as the bumpers), as this truck isn't going to have a lot of chrome on it.

Alex

Oh ya, this would be on a 64 Cab too..

Re: Old School Hot Rod Truck (1964)

I think you should run the early grill whichever way you go with the hood. It looks more gooder.

Heck ya more gooder! ;)

Tonight I get to mock up the bed and mark the bedside for cutting.. this way I can install the tubs, and measure to get my rear axle narrowed. We'll see how that goes.

I spoke with an old engine machinist today.. He's telling me that I should stay away from the 3.42 rear gear with my 5 speed. The RPMS would be too low and it would lug in 5th, (or I'd shift to 5th at 80MPH). Problem is that's where the 3.27 First gear kind of wants to be.. but then I might as well throw away 5th gear.

Sooo sadly, I'm thinking of selling the 5 speed and running a 4 speed. This way I can get a first gear that works better with the combo and have the rear gear compliment.

Any reason why the 64-66 hood is winning right now? Is it just because I have it or do you guys prefer the look of it?

Alex

Re: Old School Hot Rod Truck (1964)

Actually the earlier hood looks goodest with the early grille, just the right amount of chrome in the grille, and I`m not an early hood fan....your gears IMO if it we`re me, look around for another rear axle assembly that has a 3.73 gear set with posi, you see them all the time on CL, have that narrowed, that would put you right in the ball park with 5th gear...

Arekusu 07-20-2012 10:33 PM

Re: Old School Hot Rod Truck (1964)

I liked the 3.73's in every gear but first.. they really sucked there. I really didn't have a first gear.. maybe a 3.55's might be key?

Alex

Rich 5150 69 07-20-2012 10:38 PM

Re: Old School Hot Rod Truck (1964)

You might live with it. With the 3.73`s final RPM will be at 2200 at 65, 355`s will bring it down to about 1900 RPM...

go here and play with the gears..I think the 5 speed is .7 final ratio...
