come do my exhaust!

Re: Mulk's 8-Lugger

Thanks Rick..... I still have the passenger side to do. Hopefully it goes as smooth. It's nice having the all the bends from the old exhaust to work with. The 10 feet of new pipe was $45..... So I'm happy doing a little extra work, to save $350-$400. Plus it's gonna be super easy to remove if I have to fill any leaks I may have missed.

Re: Mulk's 8-Lugger

I was up in Carson City last week teaching at the Academy, so didn't get anything done. But I've been doing little things here and there since getting back.

Got firewall welded-up. Which I'm very happy about. Was having issues with electric fans and relay not kicking on before temp pegged. So i bought the adjustable Hayden temp unit/fan switch. Turned-out my temp wasn't pegging. I bought a new sending unit for the factory temp gauge, and it turns-out they are off by 25-30 degrees. I found a correctly calibrated sending unit from a Corvette Specialty shop for $22. I'll post link when I get home. So old fan switch worked fine, I just never let engine run long enough to find out because I got freaked when I saw the gauge. Oh well. The Hayden is a better set-up.

Still having issues with the digital sending units for my air pressures. So I sent the entire unit back, and I'm waiting for the replacement.

Re: Mulk's 8-Lugger

I've been getting a few little things done here and there, while waiting for my pressure gauges.

The hood hinges on this beast appeared to be the originals. I had changed the springs a while back, but the hinges were loose, and the rear of the hood woud never sit-down all the way. So being that I'm broke, I decided to attempt to tighten them back-up. Falling back on my days as a blacksmith farrier, it was a pretty simple task. Just a matter of heating the rivets up with a torch, and spreading some metal on the old anvil.
http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/...3/IMG_1011.jpg

Worked great, but this on rivet was the main culpret for the hood not sucking-down towards the rear, and I could get to the back-side of it to spread it out...
http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/...3/IMG_1010.jpg

So with a couple measurements, and the drill press, I was able to get to it with a descent size punch.
http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/...3/IMG_1015.jpg
http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/...3/IMG_1016.jpg

Now the hinges are tight as can be (maybe too tight), and all cleaned-up.

I'm not gonna get a chance to paint this for a while, so I just rolled-on some Rustolium in the engine compartment to protect the new patches on the firewall, until I blow it apart for paint. I also moved the washer bottle in the void where the blower motor used to reside. Looks like it was meant to be. Cleans-up the engine compartment, but still has a "is that stock" look to it.

The beast seemed to be running a tad rough. So I checked all my plug connections, and the freakin' dizzy rotated without any effort. I guess I didn't tighten it up after the last adjustment. So I did a little tuning, and adjusted the timing back to where it belongs.

And low and behold, she runs like a champ again..... And sounds pretty mean too. Here's just a quick clip taken with my phone. Quality is ok, but it gives you an idea. Should be able to click on the image.

Re: Mulk's 8-Lugger

I had a bunch more ink pounded into my back over the weekend, so my motivation to get under the Burb was lacking to say the least. But after 3 days of great weather, I couldn't take it any more. I figured I could tackle something that wasn't too demanding.

Since upgrading the radiator and fans, I wanted to cover the gap above the radiator and support, and help keep the air directed through the radiator as much as possible. I know I can buy what I needed, but I wanted to try to make it, being that it's pretty basic.

I found an old piece of metal (nice bit o' surface rust), that seemed heavy enough for the task, and commenced to cutting and bending the desired shape.
http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/...3/IMG_1047.jpg

http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/...3/IMG_1049.jpg

I don't have a metal brake (but I do have a mess, that you can see in the background), so I pinched the piece with some box-tube I had around, and used a little elbow grease.
http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/...3/IMG_1050.jpg

Basic shape completed....
http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/...3/IMG_1051.jpg

Cleaned it up a bit, drilled some holes, and put it in place....
http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/...3/IMG_1053.jpg
http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/...3/IMG_1056.jpg

I just need to tack some upper radiator mounts to the back-side, smooth it out, and it'll be ready for paint. Not perfect, but the price sure is right

Looks good.... what, now speed holes???

Mulk 11-16-2011 11:38 PM

Re: Mulk's 8-Lugger

Thanks, only put a couple hours into it. If I spent $50 at harbor freight, and bought a sheet metal brake, it would be perfect. But this will do for now.

And no. No speed holes. You know how brutal the summers get here in Vegas. I want all that air directed thru the radiator. Anyway, this beast is still geared to pull a house off it's foundation. So the term speed, won't be used to describe my driving pattern

I never planned to lay frame, just wanted to get closer to the earth. So I'm happy with the front, and I'm about to get everything bolted into place. I decided against the lower mounting "plates" and made some cups to fill the lower spring pocket. Unfortunately I didn't take photo prior to mock-up, but I'll post some when I take everything back apart.

Oh yeah. My wheels showed-up. Keeping this beast 8 Lug has allowed me to take this in a whole new territory, venturing into the off-road world.....

Slowly but surely, one piece at a time, and it'll get there

Hey Mulk,

I was wondering if you could share the back spacing on these rims?

Fronts are 20x8.5 =
rears are 22x9.5 =

I don't have a Suburban but am planning to keep my C-20 8 Lug as well and get it low. Not sure if I will go aftermarket rims but would like to check out my options. I think I am starting with a 5/5 static drop and eventually bags too.

Thanks,

Wow lots of stuff done since last time. O so #1 I love the wheels they look great, #2 that is an awesome cheap way to make a metal brake, I'm stealing that. That radiator support piece is a great idea I love the way it looks, also stealing that haha

Re: Mulk's 8-Lugger

Alright.... It's been a while since I posted any updates, I have gotten a few things done, but mainly I've just been enjoying driving the beast around again.

However, I was able to get over a serious hurdle that has been racking my brain for a while. If you've been keeping-up, you know I suicided the third door, and moved the handle along with it. Due to the proper placement of the handle so it looked factory and matched the passenger door location, I wasn't able to simply make the push-button work. Not to mention the window and track would interfere anyway. So I just went the easy route and installed a seleniod to pop the door (sometimes:cuss:).... That was the hurdle

My mind started working and I wasn't going to give-up....

I took the canteleaver part, that used to connect the lock button rods, and made a few modifications. I welded a tab for the push-button to activate (welded the washer on the face of it to help keep the rod on the button centered.) This piece mounts though one of the holes that the factory hinges used to utilize.
http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/...3/IMG_1169.jpg

You can see here the tab and washer in place.
http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/...3/IMG_1178.jpg

I then had to get creative with the rod, to get it to reach from the canteleaver, and clear the window track. Just a few, not so simple, bends added to the same rod that used to lock the door (use as many factory parts as possible)
http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/...3/IMG_1173.jpg
http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/...3/IMG_1172.jpg
http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/...3/IMG_1176.jpg

I then drilled some small holes in both ends, so I could run a cotter-pin through, to keep everything in place. This is where the rod connects into the bear-claw actuator, finishing the link. I had to ct a hole to be able to access this mess, but it's covered by the door panel
http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/...3/IMG_1180.jpg

So now I can open the door from the outside, using the handle, and the seleniod has been added to the "left-over" box. Oh, and yes, the inside handle and lock button function properly too:metal:

If I can get a video uploaded I'll post it.

Re: Mulk's 8-Lugger

Couple more little projects over the weekend. The front seats were too high and upright for my liking. So I made a few cuts here and there to the frame, and dropped the front an 1 1/4", and the rear about an 1 3/4". Made an HUGE difference in comfort, without any real chage to the overall look. However, it was such a spur of the moment task, that I forgot to snap some shots before I put everything back tobether. Next time I pull the seats, I'll get some photos.

I didn't want to cut into my dash, or have anything hanging from under it either. So I decided I'd put the center console to good use, and put together a quick panel to hold all the gauges, switches, and tunes.

http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/...3/IMG_1219.jpg
http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/...3/IMG_1220.jpg

I sill have the stock AM radio hooked-up, and turn it on when people ask about my stereo. Tell them it's all I need. The look on their face is as priceless as when I tell them the truck was built on April 1st, and as a joke, they welded-up the door while it was going down the assembly line.

Re: Mulk's 8-Lugger

man that console is too cool. are those push buttons for the bags?

Mulk 03-19-2012 09:03 PM

Re: Mulk's 8-Lugger

Thanks Kev.... Yes they are push-buttons. The gauge on the left is my fronts, middle is tank, and right is the rears. Top buttons are "UP" and lower buttons "DOWN". I had toggles, but they were junk, and worked when the wanted. This set-up took a little more wiring, but I can pull buttons individually if they go bad.

I wanted the billet buttons, until I saw how much they wanted for them. I found these, in packs of 10 on eBay, for next to nothing. Quality is OK, but the price is GREAT!

Hate to bug you but any chance of seeing pics of your rear bag placement/ setup as well as the front? I have the rears in and like how it sits but think I may do a C-Notch as well. I am piecing the fronts together but curious as to what kit or type of bag you went with and also the size on the line? Did you have to remove the inner fenders or was this doen for installation only?

Thanks... I've been laying low for a while due to work, funds, and family. But using the old 8-Lugger regularly.

However, over the last couple weeks I finally put the Burb on the side of the house to put in a step-notch and work on the new bag placement.

I'll get the photos up soon!

Anybody have any suggestions or part numbers for the shocks they are using for the extra travel? I'm looking at approx 11 inches of total travel.

I had ordered a step notch, and some brackets to mount the bags over the axle a while back (prob while hopped-up on shoulder meds), and just never got around to getting them in place. So i figured why not wait until it's 100+ degrees here in vegas to get started:crazy:

After measuring, scratching my head, and measuring some more, I took the plunge and put these beauties in place.

Re: Mulk's 8-Lugger

For whatever reason (actually came down to room), I decided to scrap the idea of putting the bags right over the axles. Therefore, I was left with a set of brackets I wasn't going to use, the old brackets I had laying around, and a section of 3x3 tubing I had for the cross brace between the notches.

So I cut apart and cleaned the pieces I thought I might use, and whittled-away on the tubing. Here's what I ended up with...

Upper...
http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/...527_184718.jpg

http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/...527_193118.jpg

I ended up cutting most of the wedged portion off after changing my mounting location, and rounded the back section of the plate so it wouldn't rub the bag when down.
http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/...602_153500.jpg

Lowers...

http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/...601_165900.jpg

http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/...601_171355.jpg

Then I made some extensions to wrap around the top of the tube.
http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/...602_153518.jpg

http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/...602_153557.jpg

Everything in place. I mounted the bags with a ride height of 6.5 inches +/-, and then added an inch so the bags wouldn't be completely compressed when laid-out. I Hope this works hahaha
