Re: New to me 1972 K5
OK. collecting parts and bringing them to my friends shop on Saturday to begin teardown. My registration actaully expires on Saturday and it won't pass emissions anyway.
I have my center console cut out and bent up. I mounted the shifter and will eventually have it welded up and coated. I'll take some pics as I load the truck up. I had my waterjet guy cut me some exhaust flanges for the 2010 Camaro manifolds. I have to pick those up on Saturday as well. They were cut for 2.5" exhaust but mu existing pipes are 2.25... to save some cash I guess I'll be reducing the OD before the flowmasters. I decided to use KORE3 to build all my FlexKORE braided brake lines. I decided against AN fittings and will be running all 3/8-24 fittings. I will use hard line from the MC to the wilwood proportioning valve. Then use the flex lines down to the frame where they split off to each corner. Nitrous Express came out with some -6AN insulated fuel line that I want to use. I dont like braided stainelss hose so this looks like a nice alternative. I need one from the tank to the hard line and one from the fuel rail to the hard line... from summits website http://www.summitracing.com/parts/NEX-14036/ Nitrous Express triple insulated race hose has gained popularity and will soon replace most steel braided hose on race cars. Not only does it insulate better resulting in less need for purging but it also out-flows the traditional steel braided hose. http://static.summitracing.com/globa...ex-14036_w.jpg |
Re: New to me 1972 K5
Got the truck to my friends shop along with all the parts I had stashed. Had to cut off the home made hitch to pull the tank. The wleded it to the rear frame rails as well as two more plated on each side. Ater that I pulled the rear bumper, fuel lines, brake lines shocks and exhaust.
I went to reassemble the front Dana 60 and ran into a problem. As far as I can tell the driver side lower bearing race / cup wasn't seated fully. When I install the knuckle and tighten everything down, its so tight I cant turn it... I'm going to have a shop reinstall that side... I hope to pull the front clip along with the motor/trans/transfer this weekend... I'll try and take more pics... PS: I dropped my 1 month old Droid Razr Maxx and trashed the screen... no insurance so I was happy about the progress I made till that happend... |

Re: New to me 1972 K5
So I pulled the front clip yesterday... Also pulled the bulkhead harness out to clean it up and sort out whats there. I want to run some relays for the headlghts.
Today I pulled the old motor/trans/xfer. Pulled both crossmemebers and wire wheeled the frame where the new engine mounts will go. I aso cuts rivets for the bumpstops and removed them, pulled the brake and fuel lines, cut off all the bracketst the PO welded to the frame for exhaust.... I now have a clean slate to work with.... here are some pics.... out with the old... (my buddy Russ guiding it) http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...psfd2467a7.jpg ready for the new(er) ... http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...ps2e48a59f.jpg After these pics I removed the gas pedal, cleaned the 5lbs of crap out of the fresh air vent at the footwell, trimmed the steering column bracket to clear the Hydroboost bracket and removed the e-brake cable. I will be running a hand e-brake lever in the center console I'm building.... |

Swapped out the splined end on the steering shaft to match the 2WD steering box.
Started to clean up the core support and test mount the trans cooler. Dropped off my fenders to be media blasted and the CaptainFab firewall bracket to be powdercoated. I did receive my FlexKore hoses for the rest of the brake system... Measured out for my fuel tank, should end up being about 35 gallons, maybe a little more... it extends above the rear axle to gain those few etra gallons... I sent the drawing (below) to the waterjet guy. I already had a 48x102" sheet of stainless steel that I was going to use for Chevelle. |

how far will that tank hang down? i made mine 10" top to bottom with a 1" sump in the center so it actually hangs down 11". it is right up against the bed channels so it hangs below the frame ~6 inches. it is also about 35 gallons but i had more room to work with since it is a truck, and i slightly modified the rear frame section and made more space for it in doing so. http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...uck/0012-1.jpg your chevelle build is sweet too! Re: New to me 1972 K5
I asked for the bird design ... It was better then a company logo... I guess they were built on a Friday. HA. I spoke to the owner and he's building me a new set...
The tank will be 13" deep to fit the factory fuel module. I also have a 1" body lift and the the frame is 4", so if I leave space for the fuel connections on top it should be about 8 to 9 inches below the frame. |

Re: New to me 1972 K5
Ok. weekend update...
New crossmember for the trans/transfer case... boxed mounting plates to fit in the frame... I'm having a bracket cut on the water jet that will be bolted to the trans and welded to the crossmember... http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...psde403a92.jpg Fox shocks hanging off the factory mounts.... I'll weld the lower mounts when the axle is centerd and pinion angle is set. http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...psdce0f649.jpg Here is the center console. I didn't really do anything to it this weekend other then take a pic. The very front still needs to be bent down. I have a hand e-brake to go in the center.... I just ordered some cable shifters from NWFab.... http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...pse9b84737.jpg http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...psf23cbb3f.jpg This is a set up for a doubler, I'll only have two shifters http://www.northwestfab.com/assets/i...cablestand.jpg the last pic is the CaptainFab booster mount and my new wire "harness" for the brake lights. I used a 90* fitting from home depot and I'm running 14awg 6 wire trailer wiring. I will be doing something custom with the rear lights... http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...ps9622441c.jpg |
Re: New to me 1972 K5
I forgot to add that I picked up the fuel tank from the waterjet guy on Saturday too. It's not even bent yet so I didn't get any pics....

Sunday update...
Back of 4L80e with a temporary brace. The six holes in the trans are not symetrical.... http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...ps161b3978.jpg Here is a close up of the 3/8 plate that bolts to the trans/xfer adapter... It's welded to the tube crossmember and then boxed in... then some overall pics http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...ps988bba55.jpg http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...ps4392abb1.jpg http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...ps05d8487c.jpg Plent of room on the driver side for exhaust... none one the passenger side as the transfer case is clocked up and is only an inch from the floor... http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...psab9f032f.jpg |
Re: New to me 1972 K5
Also finalized the rear axel... centered and set pinion angle ... new lower shock mounts and factory upper mounts... Not sure if I'll add a mount for the reserviors or just attach them to the shock body...
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...ps06c3ac76.jpg Russ cleaning the axle tubes... you can see the new mounts in bare metal and the factory mounts further out... http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...ps86f7dd50.jpg Here are the new rear spring hangers. The first set was not square and they also hit the body mount on the Blazer. The vendor was very easy to work with and built the new hanger and sent it out without hesitation. Kert at DIY4X is great and easy to work with. I have recomended him before and still will. http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...ps6e4667b7.jpg Here is a shot of the front of the driver side, springs mounted and shock tabs welded... 11" of travel on the Fox 2.0 shocks... http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...psb2d5bbd0.jpg http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...ps8fe883ef.jpg OH.. and here is a shot of the stainless steel tank... still flat with its protective plastic cover... http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...pse9db13a5.jpg |

do you loan your buddy russ out????? haha nice work guys

Re: New to me 1972 K5
OK. Haven't updated in a while. The tank was a PITA... Too many bends on one piece, so we had to trim ends and weld them back on.. Also put a little too much heat into the ring... so the top is a little warped. Its tacked together...
Trying to track down a scrap piece of 2x4 to make a new rear crossmember. Replace the factory bolt in Z shaped bent one with a welded on length of box tubing... http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...ps1ead9f21.jpg http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...ps4e71c5b8.jpg http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...ps51697989.jpg I bolted up the hydroboost and built the connecting rod to the pedal. I cut and sectioned the brace from the firewall to the master cylinder (not pictured). http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...psf5f97c2a.jpg I posted this in my brake upgrade thread as well... but .... I went to test the Raceline wheel on the passenger side and it fit, but barely. So close that I went and assembled the driver side (I hadn't tried this before.) I tride to mount the Raceline wheel and it wouldn't fit over the wheel studs. The problem was I upgraded to 5/8" wheel studs and holes in the rim was too small. It had no allowance for being 27+ years old and slightly off center. So I grabbed the Hummer rim and .. TA DA... it fit the driver side, no problem.... 1/16" celarance between the caliper and rim.... So now I was thinking, what the hell is wrong with the other side.... I disassembled the passenger side brakes, then re-assembled making sure everything was aligned. There is a small amount of adjustment/play in the hole that the caliper mounting bolt goes through. I test the Hummer wheel again, and IT FIT.... again only 1/16" clearance, but it clears... as long as there is no deflection in my braket, I should be fine... Another note about the Raceline wheels. You have to use aftermarket slpined lug nuts. The fit was so tight that you couldn't even get a thin wall socket on the lugnut. Now that may be beacuse I upgraded to 5/8 wheel studs and the OD of the larger lugnut take up more space, but just and FYI. http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...ps12468ffa.jpg http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...ps7ebc13ad.jpg http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...ps7f311ca5.jpg http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...ps8288a98e.jpg http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...ps36a1d393.jpg |
Re: New to me 1972 K5
I had wondered about that tank. it looked like it might be a real bear to break up. i wish you were closer, i could get you your scrap of 2x4 this morning! i used a few drops of that for cross members in my truck since we have a lot of it laying around at work.
are you planning on baffles for your tank? if not, i would strongly recomend them. looking forward to seeing it mounted! |

Re: New to me 1972 K5
Sunday Update:
Started by bending a few brake line pieces... then I messud up and went out an bought some more.... moving on .... When Russ showed up we installed a new rear crossmember to replace the factory one bent like a Z. Unbolted the old one and welded in a pices of 2x4 heavy wall box tubing. Dont cringe, but I cut off the rear frame horns too.... Well I didn't, I made Russ do it.... I just couldn't.... I'll have a custom bumper on the back anyway. I think I want to cap the farme rails from driver side to passenger side for a more finished look... but maybe just skipit as the bumber will be right there anyway... http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...ps4aa2e6ce.jpg http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...psdb58d1b2.jpg http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...ps5f5150d7.jpg http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...psef9ae9f0.jpg http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i9...psb5e49794.jpg After the new crossmember was installed, we mocked up the tank. We were making a front crossmember for the tank and I was cleaning the frame rail to weld it when ..... The tank fell off the stand from about 5ft in the air... hit the floor ... put a dent in the back of the tank... and destroyed the OEM GM Fuel Pump assembly.... It's 80% plastic and the force just shattered it. So now I have to spend $250 for a new pump... FML! :whine: ... :barf: At this point I just celaned up a few tools, turned off the lights and left... |
Re: New to me 1972 K5
Good progress, sorry to hear about the tank - that sucks. Looks like you are getting close to lighting a fire. So which rims are you going to run?
