Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.
You are so awesome. thanks bruce. Title says its a 72 but I knew it not to be so ;). Quick reply. I like it. the truck has VERY little rust and a 283ci out of a 68 pickup. almost all original and I picked it up for 1400.00 bucks. It is a welcome addition to our chevy family and I look forward to sharing picks and build progress with you guys.
thanks again, chefk85 :chevy: |
Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.
The title being off a year is very common as the truck model year was not the same as the calendar year. If you want start a thread on your truck and post some pics. We would love to see it.

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.
More important is the door pillar number plate and the frame numbers, they should all agree. But the number provided is in fact a 71 production VIN. Its also among the last of the last built there in 71. The blue door sticker is probably dated 7/71.

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.
Hmm. The VIN doesn't match the door placard.
Mistake? Or........? Since everything else is the same I'm guessing it's just a mistake on the door. |

There is a conflict between the model designation on the VINs, the door pillar plate and the SPID. But everything supports the fact it appears to be an original vehicle with a production typo. Both VINs should read CS180S156361. The actual build and options generally break down as: 1970 Blazer 4X2 (CS10514) 250 cid 6 cyl engine (std) 3-speed, column shift, manual trans (std) Base trim (std) Driver and passenger HD utility bucket seats (AN3) White hard top (Z58) 8.25-15/4RP highway tread, tube-type, tires rear and spare (RL2) G78-15/B highway tread, tube-type, front tires (RL5) Gold vinyl trim interior (690) Medium Gold Poly exterior (526) Painted bumpers front and rear (std) In all a nice general use truck. The Gold trim was a one year only option. |

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.
Hi All,
I have acquired a chevy truck and I'm having trouble figuring out exactly what it is. I have some paperwork including the original maintenance log with the VIN stamped on the edge and the metal plate I believe originally located in the glove box. Here it is, can someone help me please? CE338Z130550 Thanks! |

To determine any more we need the SPID label inside the glove box door. That will list the model as manufactured and any RPO or fleet options as well as trim and paint codes Welcome to the board! |
Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.
Thank you Tim! I'll search for the SPID label.

Not sure what the question is though. Yes your truck decodes as a factory C/30 V8 157" wheelbase chassis cab. From the options I'd say it was a motorhome at some point, but definitely a Cheyenne/30 |
Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.
Hi ChevyCheyenne71,
On your model number, the 14 is the code for Axel to Cab dimension. I equated that to wheelbase because wheelbase length provides more useful information than a Axel to Cab dimension does. Also to save space and still include all most all of the trucks found on this website, the trucks over 1 ton, or over 133" WB were left off. The decoders only cover light duty trucks, 133" WB or less. In your case the 14 is a Axel to Cab dimension of 84" to 89". Which equates to a wheelbase of 157" Hope that helps and welcome to the forum. Looking forward to seeing more of your truck. Nice looking Dually you have there. |

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.
This is by far the easiest vin decoder to use and best looking one i have ran into in my many vin decoder searches. I have a small problem though. The truck i. Trying to decode is a GMC 5500 (Same as a chevy C50) and its vin is different than what are pictured. Its vin is CE50V-A102079
|
Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.
My GMC reference materials are packed up right now. (I'm in the middle of a move). But let me see if I can get this off the top of my head.
CE50V-A102079 C = 2wd E = V-8 5 = 2 Ton 0V = Cab & Chassis - = Space reserved for special designation A = Atlanta assembly plant 1 = 1971 02097 = Unique serial number Thanks for the complement on the decoders. |
Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.
So one of my trucks is also a GMC 1 ton with the 157'' wheelbase (used to be a class B MH) Pretty sure the wheelbase code is 64, that is what is says on the glove box anyways as the model-- CE364OV -- vin: CE3OV ZA 2....
|
Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.
my vin doesn't really match up ... {I have CE149S894367------supposed to be original title to factory swb chev 1969 fleetside ......

(All Chevy light duty trucks started with 800001 in 1969) This decoder will work for yours. I left off the starting number for 1969 (800001) and 1971 (600001) on this decoder. All other years 67, 68, 70, and 72 started with 100001. (Chevrolet light duty only) Attachment 1558362 |

"We intentionally tailored the decoders to fit the trucks most commonly found on this website" You didn't miss it. We intentionally left it off as well as many other codes that could be found on Chevy or GMC trucks, but are not common on this website. If we included them all the font would be to small or the decoder would be to large to be a quick and easy resource for the trucks most commonly found on this website. |
Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.
Hi Bruceman1968!
This is a GREAT decoder! We just picked up a 1970 GMC K20 for my son's project and I see in the VIN decoder that apparently this truck was a Cab/Chassis. I was wondering if you could help with the "F" designation so I can determine what it was originally. the frame number and the pillar tag match. The truck has been repainted, but it has a Chevrolet tailgate on a GMC, and now that I see this, there is a distinct possibility that it was used as something else before we got it. We do know that it was used to tow heavy construction equipment for most of its life. KE203-FZ64735 MODEL KE25903 3/4T 4X4 350 V8 4 SPEED HD F/R SPRINGS RADIO AMMETER, OIL GAUGE A/C PS (NO PB) 7.50-16.5 WHEELS (SPLIT RIMS) HD BATTERY MED BLUE L/R OUTSIDE MIRRORS TINTED GLASS BLUE VINYL TRIM LOCKING FRONT HUBS I'm mostly curious about the "F" designation....Flatbed? Thanks! |

Happy to help. Here is the correct VIN decoder for your 1970 GMC. The F is for the Flint assembly plant.
KE203-FZ64735 K = 4wd E = V-8 2= 3/4Ton 03 = Cab & Chassis - = Space reserved for special Designation F = Flint Assembly plant Z = 1970 64735 = unique serial number, starts at 50001 in 1970 Attachment 1558634 And here is the correct model number decoder for your truck. As you can see, the 03 designates it as a cab and chassis. KE25903 K = 4wd E = V-8 2 = 3/4Ton 59 = 127' Wheelbase 03 = Cab & Chassis Attachment 1558635 |
Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.
Thanks bruceman1968!
I was hung up on the FZ thinking the Z was for Fremont. I was mentally bypassing the dash, but now I see the Z is for 1970. Is the "Fenderside" a pickup bed? And a Cab and Chassis something that maybe would have been given a flatbed somewhere later after delivery? Because right now, it has a pickup bed on it that APPEARS to have the same under color of paint as the rest of the truck, but since it has a Chevy tailgate..........who knows. It does have the 127" wheelbase. There is evidence of a plow having been attached to the front, so it very well could have been a plow truck with a sand bed on it or a water/oil tank. Thanks again! |
Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.
Fenderside is GMC's name for a stepside bed. Your truck was originally built as a cab & chassis, with no bed on it. It could have had a flat bed added to it at the dealership or anytime after that.

Thanks bruceman1968! Very cool indeed. I was deciphering my Model number, using http://www.caaarguide.com/sub1/id442.html which had my burban listed as a 3-door wagon with liftgate. The burban has the barn doors (aka cargo doors?), so I was wondering someone had done a swap before getting to me. Your 67-72 K10 decoder ring produced this:
VIN = CKE162F145864 C = Chevy K = 4WD E = V-8 1 = 1/2 ton 6 = Suburban 2 = 1972 F = Built in Flint Michigan 145864 serial number ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Model KE10916 K = 4WD E = V-8 1 = 1/2 ton 09 = 127" Longbed (Wheelbase Length) 16 = Suburban/Cargo doors ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ which seems much more accurate! Thanks again!! |
