Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine
Looking great, at the rate your moving, i think you will make it with some time to spare and drive out any kinks... before the tour begins.

Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine
Thanks guys, I sure hope so.

Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine
Looking really nice! Do the bb stands have some value? Don't know if they are reproduced.
Anyway, nice work. |

Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine
Thanks for the kind words, That fuel set up is about as simple as it gets. No baffles in the tank, but so long as you keep it around 1/4 tank, should be fine.
|
Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine
The fuel set up is really good info. Love your Burb! One quadrillion dollars.

It's been an exciting night at the bowtieguy79 shop! The 4L80E is in!

Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine
Nice! A lift is really handy. 30 days to HRPT. You will make it.

Next steps, fit manifolds, notch frame as needed, and blend into current exhaust. Sort out the shifter, shouldn't be terrible. Buy fuel lines and AN fittings at local speed shop to finish out the fuel system Once I get to that point, I need to lay the harness out and swap a few wires for the 80E to function properly. Install inner wheel wells, mount fuse block, cut down the gas pedal and mount it, fab up a battery tray for the DS, paint underside of hood black... OH and the brake booster and MC need installed, brakes then all bleed out. Looks like a lot typed out, but should move quickly! :metal: |
Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine
For the record, F-body LS manifolds fit fantastic on the sub! I scored a pair that already had a cat delete, pipes will weld up pretty slick!

Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine
Good info...note made.

Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine
Power Tour 2015 is only 19 days away.... And the sub still being in pieces an executive decision was made...
So my buddy Josh and I are going to do the first 4 days of the tour. End in Memphis and go home Tuesday night. So with it starting to look like we are not going to take the suburban and instead take my truck, we had an idea. Why not use a vacation day now, and only do 3 days of power tour? So This past friday we took off. Hit the shop about 830am Friday morning. We started to fab up exhaust pipes from the Firebird LS1 manifolds. I had a friend give me off of his Z06, the complete cat back. I was able to use the 2.5" stainless to make an H pipe and blend in to my old exhaust. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...pseeqyqfi1.jpg While it was still on the lift, the rest of the day, we installed the driveshaft that I had 3" taken out of, a new energy suspension trans mount, Walbro Fuel Pump, fuel lines ran to engine. The shifter took some tweaks, but got it functioning. About 4pm we pushed it out of the shed and into my house garage where I have all my tools and good lighting. At that point we started to put on the accessories, radiator, shroud, and a ton of little things and tweaks along the way. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psilq1xmxk.jpg About 8pm his brother Mike showed up and we just kept plugging away.... at that point we had pork chops for lunch and garage pizza from Casey's General Store around 9pm. After pizza I had a decal installation celebration.... http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psaur7pduu.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...pscbgfriff.jpg The cold air intake is from a 07-13 GM truck. Fits pretty good, but not sure it will once I install the AC compressor.... we'll find out here in the next couple of weeks. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psdbizoaja.jpg had to borrow a few tools from a neighbor and fellow hot rodder, its 12am at this point... time for a selfie... I cut my own head off in this pic.... http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psqe8wb8i6.jpg by 1am we had the harness laid out and plugged in to everything on top.. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psvzn1kiwy.jpg Just about 3am we called it quits, I test fit all the covers and fuse block, battery etc. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps026cfwb9.jpg We cut up and tweaked an 81-87 pass side battery tray to fit on the pass side of the 72. Worked out pretty slick! http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps3vhhhhwd.jpg Today I was able to get the Denali engine harness swapped around for a 4L80E vs the 4L60E, I had one buddy who just left tonight around 730, he just kept tinkering all day while I went with the family to my boys Little League games this afternoon. Friends like that are just hard to come by. We made HUGE HUGE strides, I'm only hours away from hearing it pop off. Going to push again this week in the evenings and hope to be doing some test and tune by weekend at the latest. Hot Rod Power Tour here we come!!! |
Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine

Got it fired up tonight. Did a test crank and she popped off. Tuned out the VATS and it idles. Needs further tuning. Hope to get some miles on it this week.

Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine
Burban drove out of the shed tonight. Filled with water, did a rough tune for idle and VE table....found my O2s are not reading, need to figure that out. Also put my father in laws 17s on it, they look great! I also think the BBC front springs are a bit much...

Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine
Thanks Joe. Its been a whirl wind the last two weeks. I think I'll have it ready to drive to work this week at least a day or so.

Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine
So I had a trans PCM miss match issue. I talked with HP tuners and got the latest beta version software that would allow segment swaps in the tune. I was able to swap the trans segment from a 2500HD 2wd tune with an 80E to replace the 60E segments in my Denali PCM.
Worked like a charm, took the sub out and it shifted like silk! It was nearly out of gas, drove about 5 miles in to town and filled it up. No hick ups no burps, ran great. Tune still needs some work, but its going down the road! No hood got some funny looks :) http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psg2bxnlhu.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psnxg712nb.jpg and with the 3.07 rear end, she is just chugging down the road at low RPM http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psgbkkn1aa.jpg |
Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine
Just read through your entire build thread, cool stuff!
How much higher does the front sit than it did with the old big block? Isn't your 5.3 an iron block/alum head version? Dwight |
Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine
Quote:
I started to go 5.3. and went 6.0, but yes alum head iron block. Does weigh much less than the 402. I'm having the 2" drop coils put in later next week. |
Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine
Congratulations on the first short run! Your Burb looks really good. Will be nice on HRPT.

All the work paid off, logged 700 plus miles this past weekend and Monday running on the Hot Rod Power Tour. Had a blast! Got to hang out with fellow board member Advanced Design, and meet his wife and his crew. Was fantastic to meet you Doug!
Man day one, made the Hot Rod web site, mission accomplished! http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...pslnttlbni.jpg http://www.hotrod.com/events/coverag...wer-tour-2015/ |
Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine
Brad it was awesome to finally meet! You have a great suburban there. Nice and a very clean LS swap. Would have been cool to get the Burbs together for a photo...another time.

Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine
brad, bang up job on this one! i've been trying to talk my wife into something similar to this for quite some time. i'm getting closer i think, i've convinced her that she could daily drive a jeep/old bronco or mustang if we had a nice big home built family cruiser.
i have my heart set on an olds vista cruiser with a 442 hood, but my wife is 100% anti-station wagon, so a burb will end up in the garage. |
Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine
Brad - Champaign would be about half way. Would be cool to hook up at a cruise in.
OutlawDrifter - A Burb is a cool choice for many reasons. There is a very nice one in Abilene KS I was considering before we bought the green one Brad found for us in Peoria. PM me if you are interested in details. |
