I like the Suburban plaid.

Re: "Sweet Pea" 1975 Cheyenne 20
I think it is a really cool idea. Hard to picture it in a pickup cab for some reason. If you're determined to go plaid, I recommend the one with white and black, middle right side. I'd purchase a square foot or two though and really make sure that's what you want. I like the highlanders too, but it's a bit of a gamble that you will want all of that visual activity.

Just so you know, the truck overall has kinda captured my imagination and I'm enjoying following along. Those shocks look like they are the originals. I am a big fan of the Bilsteins so I think changing them out was a good idea. But I would wash up and keep those old shocks and hang em on the shop wall. I have a bit of a collection of old parts, oil cans (cardboard type) etc. And I'll live long enough to see these trucks being restored to "factory condition" which means somebody will need those original shocks. |
Re: "Sweet Pea" 1975 Cheyenne 20
Thanks for all the responses, and a HUGE thank you to TKCR for working with me on spec'ing out a seat. However, I've realized that I'm not quite sure exactly what it is i want in a seat yet. Also a more pressing issue came up with Sweet Pea... fuel problems.. I need to focus my attention on redoing the fuel lines, senders and possibly tank switch. I'll knock around the seat idea for a while... and see what sticks.
However I did come across this on the Squarebody Syndicate FB parts group. Looks original, and re-inspired me to do the plaid... https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...dd370df5_c.jpgUntitled by awesome_adawson, on Flickr |
Re: "Sweet Pea" 1975 Cheyenne 20
Anyway... On to less fun but more important tasks... Fuel issues.
I have always had trouble filling up my tanks. Here in CA the fuel nozzles have these very annoying "Vapor collar" thingys that completely block off the filler neck to prevent fuel vapor from escaping. In doing so, they prohibit the tank vent from operating properly, which leads to fuel puking out of the filler neck and onto the ground. That's a pain in the ass all in itself, but recently I noticed the filler tube hose on my aux tank was leaking profusely as well. That led me to crawl under there and inspect the system. Turns out all the rubber fuel lines are in pretty shoddy shape. I dropped the aux side tank yesterday and am in the process of cleaning it up, replacing the lines, and deciding whether or not i need to replace the sender. If anyone can help chime in on this question, please do. After pulling the tank, I found this setup at the top: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...eebaf19c_c.jpgUntitled by awesome_adawson, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...dd494914_c.jpgUntitled by awesome_adawson, on Flickr What exactly am I looking at here? And is it safe/legit/factory? I'm assuming that one is a fuel output line, and the other a breather, but what sort of breather contraption is that? and is it safe? Also, if i plan on swapping the sender, is it wise to recreate this exact setup? Please let me know if you have any experience in the fuel systems in these trucks... Thanks! |
Re: "Sweet Pea" 1975 Cheyenne 20
That does look nice! Flip it over, so I can see the tracks, and I can narrow down the exact year. The only drawback I see with the seat it’s a non-tilting, but that’s really not a big deal.
Been through those fuel issues myself, just last spring. Have a buddy that has a shop. He came to get the truck with a Flat Bed. I felt so much better knowing he had my Big Red. All the rubber hoses got replaced. We grew up together, next door neighbors. Now he lives locally with his shop. He also has quite a collection of Classic Cars. |

Anyways... yeah I am overdue for fuel system refresh. The crossover line from the main tank to the switching unit was literally ready to turn to dust... I bought a 25ft roll of 3/8" line and im going to go swap out every piece under there! |
Re: "Sweet Pea" 1975 Cheyenne 20
If the gages were working I probably
wouldn't replace the senders. First thing I would do is, Pull that plastic guard off the front of the tank. I have seen tanks that had so much crude built up in behind that guard. When I removed the crude the tank had a hole rusted in it. So I would suggest cleaning under that guard to see if you will need a new tank. It's probably ok (But) it just takes a minute to check. |

But as far as that breather on the second port, does that look kosher? |

locking ring? You could remove that ring a clean everything up Then put it back and see if it works. That's the vent they used back then. I had the same type on some of my trucks. Make sure it is clear (so it can vent). . |

There are many posts on sending uniuts. If memory serves, I believe 3 o'clock indicates an open circuit, meaning broken wire or junk sender.

SMS supplied the material for my 75 Scottsdale. My upholstery guy said the OEM stuff was very high quality but it had some creases that were hard to work out. GM called it Knit Vinyl avocado, gold and pearl white. I get lots of compliments on it.

Wow, that’s very nice! And it’s a GMC seat, I like those seats. They are pretty rare. GMC added a little bling to their seats, the little chrome hinge parts.

I saw where you had posted on someone else’s build, about a green steering wheel. They do have green ones from Forever Sharp steering wheels. I don’t believe these shades of green, would be a good match for your interior, but this is what I’m thinking. Maybe call them and see if they can make one. I did that with one of the seat console places. I sent them some of my left over vinyl, from my seat. And they made a console, that way it was a perfect match.

Re: "Sweet Pea" 1975 Cheyenne 20
Great stuff, man. I’m taking a lot of inspiration from Sweet Pea as I plan out my own stock-plus build for the ‘78 Suburban. Really. Well done!

All the later C10 caps attach to outside "nubs" on the wheel surface. Those 12 series have the inside "nubs" that take aftermarket style smoothie caps and other styles, but not the OEM stuff... |

I should have gone that route. I tried and failed to make GMT 16" 6 hole wheels fit by cutting out the center hole bigger. My neighbor did such a nice job with his plasma torch. Too bad I didn't have him do just one and check it before doing all five :( I ended up getting disgusted and buying 4 used 15x8 steel rallies just to get going again since one of the factory alloy wheels had busted and I didn't trust the other three. The price of the new WV 6 hole 16's per wheel isn't too much more than I spent on two sets of used wheels, but it would have been about $575 for five wheels plus shipping - what $200 or $300 to Montana ??? Maybe someday I will even do that if I decide to keep and fix up the old Suburban. |

Which Kicker 6 x9's and the 3 x 5's? I just got a surprise refund from mortgage co. so I'm buying new speakers. Already have the mounts from Big Block, painted them yesterday.

Kicker 43CSC6934 3.5's Kicker 44KSC3504 Kicker offers 4 different levels QS, KS, CS, and DS which range from high to low in quality and price. I went with the CS for the 6x9s and a little higher quality KS for the 3.5's. They are little speakers and I didn't want to risk blowing them with amp. Overall I'm happy with the sound. I think a sub would really complete the system, as it lacks much low end bass at all. But its crisp, clean and LOUD! Those corner speaker brackets are cool! easy to mount too, just mark your holes and drill pilot holes first... :metal: |
