Proud of you.

And, seeing this, I am so very, very glad, that mine is done.

I got you for the roof panel Metal.... PM sent to you.
This is looking great! I so feel your pain on the rust repair. i am such a perfectionist at times and damn that can drive a guy crazy. I can get to that point where i just say screw it, i am done, it is fine the way it is.... but then down the road a few days or weeks i get so mad at myself for not just doing it the way i really wanted to ... so i have learned to just take a few days off, do something different, work on house, shop cleaning, 7 week old Boston Terrier puppy (Girl).... this helps me to re-adjust my ideas and get back at the repair.
I am basically done with all the rust repair, now it is body work. Might as well be the same damn thing as rust repair. LOL
I am doing the body work on the cab now so i can get the floor seam sealed, along with the roof drip rail, then i can primer the cab, and get the firewall painted with POR 15 along with the cab floor, then install the sound deadner and finally test fit onto the frame again, for one last check and then paint. I see you mentioned painting earlier... I am like you in that i am not going to perfection on the body, Lord knows i am not perfect even as much as i try to be, so i am good with not perfect but nice. I have purchased Summit satin red single stage paint along with Primer to the truck. Total paint not including yours truely time, under 800.00, which is a awesome compared to the $8,000.00 to $10,000.00 i see guys paying for paint. I cannot do that... i would not drive it and if someone scratched it..... anyways.... looking great sir!! Nice to see trucks from nearby, one day we shall meet up.

I just hope it is what you need. Note: the hole for the passenger side visor is not in the replacement part. With that said, you can put one in, but all of what i did not use on the passenger side is all there and shipped yesterday, UPS.

The reinforcement plate for the visor isn't there on the repop pieces either, so you'll need to save that from your original. Be careful on where you start cuttin'

You'll probably find a mouse nest

With the great work you've already done, this part probably won't be too much of a challenge for ya.

Also, check the drip rail on the outside of the roof. If there's some pinholes up there, or just a lack of seam sealer, you definitely want to take care of that, otherwise, all the work on the inside will be wasted from a leaky roof

Thanks for the encouragement Christian. I tore into it and it really wasn't too bad.

I already replaced the seam sealer - it seems like it was missing for a really long time, leading to the damage I'm fixing all over the truck. Once i resealed the roof and cowl seams it took care of the water entering the truck from above.

I didn't take any in-process pictures of the roof patch replacement, but 88Stanger's panel was perfect. There's one little area where the weld blew through that I decided to leave alone for now. I think there was a pinhole there that I missed.

I just referred to the youtube gurus. Mostly the Gibson63 videos.

Ended up with this, so far.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...4D5644DB0.jpeg

The rear brace is too wide at the back where the flange folds over, I had to scribe and grind it back to get it to line up reasonably well.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...D6E3B88E0.jpeg
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...38DD26813.jpeg

I left the old skin and flange in place to help align the brace, but I messed up with the new skin somewhere and the edge along the door isn't straight. I'll have to grind it back and weld it to fix the door gap. I'm learning the hammer and dolly, trying to get the accessible part of the panel smooth. It's trial and error for sure. I know everyone says the reproduction fenders are bad, but man, I have a lot of time into this patch and I still don't feel great about it.

The fender closing panels were totally rotten too so I placed an order for those along with new seals and clips tonight. I need to fix the door gap and finish bending the lip around on this fender, then I can start on the other one.

Re: 1964 C10 Survivor

More rust repair this week. I improved the fender-to-door gap by grinding down the folded-over edge, welding it back up, grinding and using a file to get a flat, straight edge. It's better but not perfect.

I also tackled the left side toeboard. I thought just skimming it with epoxy or something to fill what I thought were just a lot of pinholes, but the rust was worse than I thought. After I hit it with the wire wheel on the angle grinder I knew it had to come out.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...0E9D7BA10.jpeg
The kick panel was rotten on the edge too, so it made it even more obvious that cutting it out would be best.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...3B9F1FFCC.jpeg
I was able to weld up some of the stuff closer to the center of the truck, so my cut only had to be on the outboard side of the stiffening rib. I still have a few holes to fill...if the floor is too think I'll have to make a pretty simple small patch.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...4F3CDD47A.jpeg
I made the replacement patches out of leftovers from my floorboard patch panels, made for good hammer and dolly practice.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...F6FE3EDE9.jpeg
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...487E69B6C.jpeg
I welded it in from under the truck, just felt like it was easier to reach and get the grinder in there. Honestly turned out way better than I thought it would, and is definitely good enough for this truck. I am a little bummed that I lost the depression for the dimmer switch but it wasn't salvageable and I wasn't going to try to form that by hand.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...F9571050F.jpeg
I'll have to fill those few holes and then I can move on to the fender, and then I'm done with the rust!

caseyjones 03-08-2021 10:12 PM

Re: 1964 C10 Survivor

I've finally finished the rust repair and it feels pretty good. I took a different approach to fender this time - I left the majority of the original lip intact, installed the brace, then folded over the lip on the new skin on my vise anvil before fitting it to the fender. that left a much flatter, better reference for the back edge. This side had a much worse mismatch with the shape at the fender lip than the passenger side though. I worked it for quite a while to get the patch to line up and it's still not great. I replaced the splash shields and the rubber seals against the firewall while I was in there.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...65F7C6F5E.jpeg
I put the sheetmetal all back together since the guy at the NAPA paint store is having a hard time with the match. I kind of want to drive it as-is for a bit to make sure I got seam sealer in all the right places and don't have any other surprise leak paths.
I'm switching up the wheels-got the fronts painted and new tires mounted today. Summit says the rears that I ordered Christmas day will ship this week...we'll see...

Re: 1964 C10 Survivor

Wheels are "expected to arrive" at Summit 6/18/21. So I put a few weld boogers on the truck rally wheels so they would hold the Chevelle caps on, painted them white and figured they'd pass until/if I get the new wheels.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...4F507CE77.jpeg
Weather looks like it gets better next weekend which will be perfect for painting the new bed wood. Hoping the NAPA paint store guy has figured out how to match the green on the truck so I can paint the fenders/rockers/box side cuts next week too.

Re: 1964 C10 Survivor

Thanks for the compliments! Paul, your truck is close cousin to mine - I'm watching your build too.
I got my paint from NAPA...it's close-ish. The old paint is so thin that it looks grayer from the black primer showing through. Sorry for all these garage pictures, I promise the truck does get driven. Anyway, since I took this pic I've painted the rocker too.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...FAF98D7A4.jpeg

I primed the new bed wood and ordered new strips and a bolt kit after realizing that the original stuff would look terrible against the new wood, and the time it would take to replace the bolts and fix the strips isn't worth it.

Wheels are now expected to arrive at the Summit warehouse on August 4. Is Wheel Vintiques just completely shut down? Good news is that my hubcaps didn't fly off at the first expansion joint that I hit.

My modified Speedway fuel sender is acting up - intermittently operating. I'm thinking about getting a tube-type sender instead.

On an unrelated note, my Mom sent me this picture of my Great-great-step-Grandma (I think that's right)...she and my Great-great grandfather owned a general store in Powersville, Iowa. My best guess is that's a 1934 Chevrolet.

A tip/trick to make the new paint blend is to paint black then thin coat of your green. Hit it lightly with a scotch brite to take the shine down. There's a red truck in these forums that did a great faux to match his original red.
I'll see if I can find the thread.

Mr Jones was thinking exactly the same! The colours are very close and I have the same cream wheels - only real difference is that yours is in one piece!

Re: 1964 C10 Survivor

Been tinkering on the truck a little more...
Installed a new Autoline rebuilt carburetor purchased through Rockauto.com and I'm kicking myself for not doing it sooner. When i started tearing down the old carb for a rebuild, I noticed a lot of play in the throttle shaft/bores, and the shaft had come loose from the lever. That explained the erratic and high idle RPM. I removed the airhorn gasket and put the airhorn and bowl together and could see through the gap between them. The old carb was a Holley rebuild with a 2007 date code. Can't believe how hammered it was. New carb works great, truck starts like it should, runs like it should. I also fixed a bad ground on the fuel level sender so that's working well again.
I also painted and installed my bed wood. I chose to mill the wood myself, but I think I'd just pony up for a kit next time. I am just not patient enough with wood and I just don't have the right tools. I used a creeper that my wife and daughter got me for Christmas a lot during this project - it made the maneuvering under the bed, tightening the bolts really pretty easy.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...7F0ACBFCE.jpeg
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...3C7A1ABD5.jpeg
I found an old cooler on CL and decided that it would look pretty cool in the back of the truck. i took it apart and insulated it with polystyrene foam board, thinking it might help more than the original fiberglass batt. It's a Wards Western Field model cooler. Well-used up but fits the theme of the truck. I took off the 90's radio station stickers and plan to add a few vintage stickers of my own.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...7CA80031C.jpeg
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...A7C13D46C.jpeg
I installed some Noico sound deadening mat in the doors and on the back cab wall. and it seems to help, I'll have to pull out the seat to do the floors next.
My wheels are backordered until August now, but the painted rally wheels pass for now. I've been cruising around and enjoying the mild spring we've been having.

I forget to mention. You can get a local paint store to mix up that color in oil base enamel. It'll fade easy and blend in with the original paint. You can also put it on with a fine foam roller. Mix it thin and do several coats.

I did wet sand a little bit to see if I could hide the new paint and it worked OK. I got the paint in spray cans from the NAPA paint store...the manager there mixed it by eyeball. It’s good enough for me for now. I would like to strip and repaint the interior at some point but I’m enjoying having it on the road right now.

Yeah, you're probably right. I'm way too critical of my own work in general. Thanks for the compliments guys. It's really a good truck now.

My latest update isn't very photogenic. I built my own version of twouvakind's wiper delay module and installed it today. I mounted the extra knob in one of the stock holes in the bottom of the dash, it kinda fades away down there. I love these little hidden convenience updates that make driving the truck so much better.

I filled up for the first time after the carb swap. MPG went from 9 to 14. I think the carb will pay for itself soon.

I also ordered a new seat cover set - the vinyl that's in there now split along the seam on the edge of the seat and had a hole in it. I ordered the set from Classic Industries, I can't tell if it's one of the Acme kits or if it's done by someone else. It's so hard to know what it really looks like online, so we'll see when it gets here. I realize now I probably should have ordered new armrests while I was at it.

caseyjones 05-16-2021 10:02 PM

Re: 1964 C10 Survivor

The truck came with a gray vinyl-covered seat that was really in pretty good shape. One small tear on the left side, a rust stain from a paint can, and a protective layer of cigarette tar and dirt. i cleaned it up and it was holding up pretty well, but then the vinyl tore at the seam along the left side and the tear just kept growing.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...378FF89FA.jpeg
I decided that I should replace the cover before the foam started to get damaged, so I ordered the beige/tan vinyl and cloth combo through Classic Industries. it's incredibly difficult to tell from the online pictures what you're going to get, so I waited to see it before I did anything to seat in the truck.
In prep, though, I did pull out the floor mat, scrubbed it with Tide and a brush, hit it with a pressure washer, and it came mostly clean. I also laid down a bunch of panels of Noico butyl/foil sound deadening on the floor, pretty much anywhere you can't find it without looking for it.
I got the seat covers on Saturday and I thought they looked great. I did have to run to Harbor Freight to grab a legit pair of hog ring pliers because the ones from the kit are garbage. Got it all covered up on Saturday and installed this morning. I'm really happy with it. The cloth is woven and has some variation in color. The vinyl seems nice, it's not really plastic-y and is pretty soft.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...74E1D0EE4.jpeg
Don't pay for these pieces of garbage:
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...618A6D14D.jpeg

I also pressure washed my paver patio. Paver patios in the PNW are a terrible idea...they get covered with moss, and no matter what anyone says, it's not charming, it's disgusting.

Ha! I actually tried to find one at a more reputable hardware store but there were none in stock, and honestly the HF pliers worked really well and I got em for around $6!

Truck looks great and I agree with Lostmy65 on the paint, it's easy as the person that did it to see the imperfections but to us it looks great man.

On the harbor freight thing I would never tell people that HF is the best or tell a pro mechanic to buy all their tools there but so far I have had really good luck with their stuff and bet most home mechanics can get by with them. When I got my own house\garage I had hand tools but had always used my dads air compressor\ engine hoist etc, had a time where I really needed a compressor but the prices for name brand were just out of my reach so HF it was. 9 years later on same compressor ($149 21G oiled) and 0 issues.
