Re: 65 C10 Family Connection
DAMN, that is just badarse!! Love this!! Great work sir!!! I can see it already, you have inspired some new ideas! Keep up the great work, maybe one day I will get to see it done in person.
I see you are in Oregon, you going to the Swap meet in Portland? |
Re: 65 C10 Family Connection
Thank you 88. You are alot further ahead on your project, I have been keeping track.
I have never actually made it to the swap meet even though I have been here most of my life. |

Boyds tank making a test run for fitment. I will be mounting it on the top flange of the frame rail instead of the usual placement of the bottom. I have removed the rearmost cross member for some extra room. That support will be replaced with a hidden hitch.
I should have plenty of room since the bed floor will be raised. |

ok, jumping a bit. Really want an x pipe in here, but space with a 3" exhaust is a premium. Quite a bit of finagaling. I may run out of time with this part. The 8 speed is long and large. The two crossmemebers are very beefy and the 3" is very resistant to flexing...

Well the space to put the xpipe was too tight for the resources of the time. So I went old school true duals. I may revisit the x pipe.

Trying some ideas on the routing around the fuel tank. Pretty sure I am gonna exit them under the fender between the tire and bumper.

Test fitting the hydrobooster and master cylinder. I am using CaptainFabs (from the forum here) brackets. They fit really nice. I chose his kit that has the provision for a clutch master cylinder, although I have an automatic at the moment. I have been toying with the idea of using a 6 speed manual from a Nissan Z car. What has kept me from the manuals is having the shifters interfear with the bench seat.

Great project! Looking at these keeps me from selling mine. I’d regret it. Keep up the awesome work!

This days agenda. These are the 1970 F100 axles. They are 5 on 5 1/2 pattern. They need to be 5 on 5.

Great machining:metal:
Yeah one of those holes has to be Plugged;) Because the stars do not Align  |

Whoo! The holes match. We are using the front vented rotor from a late '90's AWD Chevy Astro van as the rear disk. The rotors are 1.25" thick and 11.6" in diameter. For now I will be using GM D52 calipers.
The OD of the axle and the OD of the register hub were turned down to match the rotor, so no mods to the rotors needed, now or in the future. Just a regular parts store item Oops.. The picture shows the Ford pattern. I guess I forgot the take an after pic.. |
Re: 65 C10 Family Connection
Your fabrication work is top notch, great work so far! I am really enjoying this build

Well, remember those cool wheels that I got over 20 years ago? They take 14mm lugs. These rotors have 1/2" screw in studs. Sooo....

Using an Astrovan hydrobooster and needed to mate the rod to the 65. You can see the Captain Fab bracket installed on the booster.

More fun stuff arriving. Fat 67-72 wheel houses.
|
Re: 65 C10 Family Connection
Those fat wheel houses are going to make the rear look Wide;)
Nice addition :metal: |
Re: 65 C10 Family Connection
Are those wheel tubs a bolt in option for our trucks? They look quite a bit wider than our factory tubs.

Re: 65 C10 Family Connection

As for the flange on where it bolts to the bed side, I will be moving the wheel house upward due to being lowered. I will be redrilling the holes in the bedside. I can compare the flanges of the widened tubs to the stock ones for you. I will post pictures when I do. |

Working on the radiator and core support and figuring out what I need to do. This is a "universal" radiator. Since in am using an L86 with the stock accessories both radiator fittings are on the drivers side. This radiator is a cross flow unit with an internal transmission cooler. The radiator was intended to have both fittings on the passenger side. So I flipped it around to have them on the drivers side while moving the trans cooler fittings to the passenger side. To do this required that I move the filler neck to the opposite corner.

Thank you 79.
Today's project was getting the new rear axle housing prepped for installation. I need to weld on new saddles for mounting to the trailing arms. Question is, how far apart should they be? I can't tell you, because I cheated. Used "from unders" tack welded to the saddles to jig it up on the original 12 bolt. Now I can just center it up on the new housing. No measuring. |

Popped the original windshield out as it was delaminated and broken. I was pleasantly surprised to find zero rust.
I was laughing to myself when I looked at the tag on the replacement windshield. I have been hoarding parts for a while. I found the receipt for the windshield when I got it from The Filling Station, in 2003... Does that make it a vintage part?? |
Re: 65 C10 Family Connection
For sure that is vintage .:metal:
I see a 1980 or 1990 vehicle going down the road and, That is Not old to Me :haha::haha: That Windshield is NOS 50 %ish ;) |

Re: 65 C10 Family Connection

Hmm. That could be a problem. I guess you could narrow the axle...
That's one of the reasons I ditched the 10" wheels that came on my truck. Attachment 2267990 |

Re: 65 C10 Family Connection

So this rear axle is from a 1970 F100 and it is 2" narrower than the factory 65 axle. With my wheel and tire combo it is still too wide for the ride height I want to achieve. I have had these wheel for more than 20 years and I am not going to get differnt ones.
The lower (or second) picture shows the truck mocked up at ride height. Currently I have 3" of upward travel to the bumpstops on the rear axle. First picture shows suspension at full compression, or on the bump stops. There is 4" of droop from ride height. 7" total axle travel. I am using air bags and have a ride height controller. I would have approximately 7" from the lowest part of the frame under the cab to the ground at ride height. Gonna have to get out the chop saw and make me a skinnier axle! |

This is a great build. I wish more people would start using the "Rate this Thread" so that threads like this get the 5 stars they deserve.
