60-65 Falcon and Mustang tank will fit between the rear spring hangers for those with SWB leaf spring trucks. The rest of the install is similar to the Camaro tank install. Mounting is easier since these tanks have a flange all the way around the top, so no need for straps. Thanks for the info on the flip down over-center license plate brackets.

Cool. What is the capacity? Will the sending unit work with our trucks stock gauges?

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
So I am looking to do this mod as well. Is this all that is needed besides the mod on the license plate for the filler neck:

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
67slider, thanks for the write-up. It made things a lot easier when I did mine this weekend. I followed your parts list almost exactly, except I found my tank at a swap meet.
The only thing I am going to do different is I will be putting the fill nozzle in the bed with a trap door. http://i1318.photobucket.com/albums/...psf9606878.jpg http://i1318.photobucket.com/albums/...pse7f46c49.jpg |
Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
I ended up getting the tank but when I installed it on my truck it looked to be sitting too low for me. It just looked odd and didn't feel comfy with it sitting that low. I needed to put some square metal tube (2") since my truck has leaf springs so it would not hit the joint where the leaf springs connected to the frame. I think I am going to just sell the tank and get the boyd tanks that fit in the spare tank area. This would sit about 4 inches higher than the camaro tank would.
From looking at ekgguy's pics mine seems to sit a bit lower. |
Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
My tank sits right against the frame rails and is actually about 2 inches outside the rails on either side. I could see that if you had leaf springs, that it would probably hit the rear mounts or the springs themselves.
|
Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
Yup that's pretty much exactly what is happening. It is a couple of inches outside the rails and it hits the rear mounts. The spacer was needed to clear them. To me it seemed to sit too low but I guess this is to be expected with any tank that is underneath the bed.
You couldn't see the tank from the bumper but it is clearly visible from the side. I assume there won't be any issues with it sitting that low? Also probably other gas tanks would fit in a similar fashion unless I go a custom route which would end up being expensive. |

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
Was there a reason for using the 2"x3" tubing instead of 2"x2"? I am guessing that the tank needed the 3" for clearance.
|
Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
Yeah. I mocked it all up with 1x1 pine boards to find out what height I needed. For my application the 2x3 worked best.

I used 1x3 to properly locate the filler behind the license plate.

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
If anyone is interested in doing this I have some of these gas tanks I will be parting with.

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
Can I ask how you connect the 2 sections of fuel lines? That uses a union right? What about the connection to the tank and fuel pump, did you use fittings or rubber lines and clamps?
|
Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
I used a union to join the two lines. I used a short piece of rubber tubing from the tank to the hard line under the frame and a short piece from the end of the hard line to the pump. It allows a little flex without stressing the metal.

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
Thanks for all the help and the great write up. I have ordered most of the parts I need and I am trying to put together a list of items to pick up at the auto parts store. I have never messed with fuel lines other than rubber ones so this will be a new experience for me.

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
Has anyone used a Camaro tank on an AD? If so what sender did you use for the 0 - 30 ohm stock gauge?

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install

I realize this is old but here is a 67-68 Camaro tank in a AD truck. the difference in the tanks is 67-68 no neck 69 has a fill neck. this tank is for EFI
Either tank is a good under bed conversion for 67-72 trucks and AD trucks |
Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
sorry if this is a silly question, but are there different senders? does a stock sender for a camaro work for this application?
thanks |
