Re: slow ride (redux)
picking bed wood. I spreadsheet everything haha
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...09.05%20PM.png decided on 8" boards, the factory setup is a combination of different sized boards, but I want it more uniform laying it out, I got a new in box polished stainless strip kit with the 63 long bed parts truck, so all the strips will need trimmed. lays out nice, none of the bolts should interfere with the bed braces. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m.../IMG_8690.jpeg $5 per piece http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m.../IMG_2145.jpeg $15 per piece http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m.../IMG_5934.jpeg trying to decide if I need to spend 3x. if I do the $5 boards I may do the diesel/used motor oil stain on them, if $15 probably thompsons water seal. picked up some awesome old school gear for the 65, some ancient impact truck boxes, a carver amp with T03 transistors and load based rail voltages, and a yamaha eq with an aux in. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_9351.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m.../IMG_3083.jpeg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_9352.jpg I am PUMPED, the stuff looks brand new. |

Re: slow ride (redux)
I was out cruising today and ended up by this cool old car repair garage from the 30s that keeps falling apart. I was trying to stage the picture and took a couple quick snaps, I heard a car on the side street start its engine and didnt really pay attention, I was in the middle of this empty 4 lane highway and looking high and low trying to see if I was in a good spot. it was a sheriff :haha:. kinda glad I didnt pull over the broken chain/gate with the "no tresspassing" sign on it, even though it would have been a 10x better picture. you can see it in the second picture.
anyway, here are the 3 quick ones I took before being rousted. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_9430.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_9431.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_9432.jpg damn my wheels need polished |
Re: slow ride (redux)
Your wheels need no polishing if you are cruising.
Neat photo set, I always look out for coot photo locations. |

Re: slow ride (redux)
haha it is the dirt road I live on, the dust is finer than fly ash concrete and just sticks to everything. I dont live in the boonies, its an older area in a well developed area, they just put sand over the old asphalt road and its like a grinding machine, just pulverizes the sand to a super fine powder.
there is a guy in town that polishes semi wheels and waxes them, I am going to take these to him when I pull the rear end for gears. |

Re: slow ride (redux)
what is the gas tank in your truck from originally?
|
Re: slow ride (redux)
its the stock s10 tank
|
Re: slow ride (redux)
washed the wheels, amazing what a little soap does. this dirt road is really the pits.

Re: slow ride (redux)
thats a awesome looking truck! must get pretty good mpgs with that motor! interested in more!
|
Re: slow ride (redux)
its been averaging 22mpg over the last couple tanks, I think that will go up when I get the 4.56 gears installed because it is trying to climb the torque hill against highway speed aero load and especially when there is a headwind

Re: slow ride (redux)

yeah mine is a mile in. the problem isnt really the dirt, its that the road used to be asphalt. so its like a big grinding machine that makes silt, and that silt gets into eveything. thanks for the comments guys. I have decided to sell the truck (and the 49 and 47 when done) to build a shop out back. I just cant hack the weather in my current shop, which is the driveway haha. |
Re: slow ride (redux)
finally bed wood time. got the "good" boards at home depot, better than knotholes I think
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pskv59nvrg.jpg spent an hour on the table saw making the grooves, it would have gone a lot faster but I had 10 boards and the 3/16 wide groove took two cuts with a 1/8th blade, that is 4 cuts per 8ft board. yeesh. then a quick slice to make the face cuts, worked well on the saw 10/10 would do again and come to think of it WILL do again for the 49 bed floor. A tip, if you tackle this: build a jig that holds the board flat against the blade and against the gate, my hands are RAW from pushing down and in. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pselgeomkg.png http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psjyf1fjsz.jpg test fitting, the boards will have a polished stainless strip between them and stainless bolts to join them, and those are just scraps behind the tubs, the wood will be cut to curve around the tub like you would expect. I did two 6" boards for the center and 8" boards everywhere else, it will be vaugely reminiscent of stock appearance, but not exact. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pspkihmu3y.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psi4uxtkww.jpg been getting lots of interest for the truck online, lots of motorcycle trade offers which I dont care too much for. some cash offers, a guy offered me close to my minimum but its a little early to worry about selling quickly yet. He can always come back. Another guy drove in from Oklahoma and just left, he was in a work car, said he would bring his wife back next time and I think a trailer. got this offered yesterday, it was hard to say no... http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...sm9hoci3c.jpeg the reason it was hard to say no was because I saw that car on craigslist almost 3 years ago, and it was hard to resist buying it then too. I even jonny screenshotted it and had a copy of the ad. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps5xee63z4.png the guy was happy to find some history of the car, he didnt buy it from the guy in the ad, it was one or two buyers past that. I love the whole negotiation vibe people use nowadays, like they are all Mikes or Franks or Ricks or Coreys or other history channel pawn and picking gurus. Most are Chumlees though, painfully slow and unaware. Just because you offer half doesnt mean you have entered negotiations, it just means I am polite enough to say no and stop there. I am going to do some little stuff to it, probably get the AC going since its a gazillion degrees. fix some little fiddly stuff thats never bothered me but might bother a buyer. The guy tonight was overly worried about the sagging door hinge, really bowtie bits is in town though and it only takes an hour or so to swap out a hinge. |
Re: slow ride (redux)
Love your truck, been following it for a while and was surprised when I saw it on CL. Just wished you had LS it and I would have been looking at it. On a side note I did buy the 63 SWB with 327/700R from Wichita a week or so ago, price was right but its is a bondo queen. I put some Epoxy Primer on it and gonna just to flip it.

yeah I want a shop that has a roof. about an LS, anyone that wants it can put a 4.8 or 5.3 directly into it easy and cheap. it already has the high pressure fuel system and tank, they make bolt in S10 mounts, and even the wiring is simple because it has the bussed distribution center already under the hood. In my opinion, and based on sales of 64-66 with bags and billets and custom suspension and with a truck motor, the value of this truck would be a lot higher with that done. I dont want to belabor the point, but if someone tried to find a nice 64-66 SWB BBW, paid the price for the custom billets and tires, and just bought the control arms, they would have spent almost what I am asking for a done, sorted, bagged, reliable, daily driver with AC and brand new everything, suspension carpet brakes all maintenance. I think I saw that 63, sent it to a friend who is looking for a body to put on his 4x4 tahoe chassis. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psae2axntq.png it looked pretty ate up in the pictures but was shortbed and big window, thats what he was looking for. edit: probably this one, since it mentions a 327/700r4 http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psljb9buq4.png |

thanks man, here is hoping it works out!

Re: slow ride (redux)
wood bed coming together. cant order a kit for this, because of the tubs and floor height makes it all wonky. even ordering bed strips, a shortbed kit wouldnt fit. I got a longbed stainless kit YEARS ago with the 1963 that donated its grille, so I was able to chop it to size. fit all the bed wood pieces and made sure it worked.
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psjfx3gylw.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psje5ptm5z.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pslcrq5iao.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psn9fu9qbj.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psdwbgllzf.jpg yes that strip is backwards haha http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psw303ony7.jpg I think I really like the subtle 8" center piece and two center 6" pieces, kinda looks like racing stripes haha. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psgcldw4oy.jpg obligatory high angle shot for you photo guys http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psbzn8kijr.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pslfby6cr4.jpg stained them and sealed with thompsons http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pss8wy6njr.jpg probably wont assemble today, I want to change the pinion angle and some other stuff before I do. yes I can tilt the bed but right now I can lay on it and reach right through, cant do that with a floor. |
