Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
GMC91- Check out LMC truck. Some guys on here swear by them, some swear at them, but their catalogs are worth it (free).
Also, a Chiltons or Haynes manual is also a good thing to have ($20 or less) and look on Ebay for the Gm Service manual. The last one I got was bout 40 bucks. Definately worth it for the torque specs and what not. Looking good!! |
Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
I got the chiltons manual for an early Christmas, I got LMC catalog ordered, have no clue when it shall get here. And right now just doing a lot of wire brushing.

Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
Today I decided to list my TH350 that came out of the truck on craigs list. I dont need this truck to race, or pull or anything, just to drive and cruise. So Im selling the Th350 and gonna get me a 700r built up for it.

Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
Well this throws a wrench into things. Last night when driving around my DD decided to take a dump on me. Driving home and I heard a loud thud, then the truck didnt want to get up and go, then it didnt go at all. Damn TH350 went out. So now I gotta see if I can take the tail-shaft off the blown TH350 and put it on the TH350 that came outta this truck. And hopefully Ill have a truck agian.

Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
Alright, well its been awhile since Ive done anything to this truck. Got a new GF that didnt work out(go figure, couldnt handle my love for trucks), my 91 DD took a dump on me then soon as I got it running agian it gets totaled out by another car hitting me. But everything should be settling down now, got me a new car, no GF to worry about, and finally getting my hours back at work. So its back to wire brushing and painting.

Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
Alright got some done tonight, wore my @ss out lol. Havent worked on this truck in over a month and dove right back in it tonight. Got one side of the front axle apart. Gonna get it all cleaned and painted this week. I also built a little cart thingy to carry my frame around for me since that think is HEAVY.
Here is the axle were it sits, were I work on it in my own little bay. http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...a308/001-4.jpg The side I got apart, Im still debating replacing the universals and what not(or what ever there called), why I got it down this far. http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...a308/002-4.jpg Got this almost ready for paint, sorry my lack of names for parts, I dont know what there called but I know how to put it back together. http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...a308/003-4.jpg This is the littlt cart I built. http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...a308/004-3.jpg And if anyone wants to help me out, you can tell me the names of stuff so I know what to call them. |
Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
Dumb question here, but how in the hell do you get the lower and upper ball joints out. Ive been trying for over 2 hours and cant get them to budge.

Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
some advice for you which will save you time, maybe some money, and allot of aggravation.
1. Try to keep your area organized, and picked up. 2. get a Chiltons or a Haynes manual. 3. This is going to sound crazy but get a notebook and write stuff down, draw diagrams of how stuff came apart. It is easy to forget stuff if you walk away from your project for a couple days, keeping a notebook helps refresh you memory. Just a little advice take it or not. |
Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
also take pics and store em on the computer they help me more than anything
|
Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
I know, I got to get the organization part down, Im a very unorganized kinda person. But I do keep lots of pictures of everything, and I do have the haynes manual. But I dont understand any of it in the manual.

Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD

Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
Looking good. Your doing a great job.
Also, that front bumper was kinda scary haha, looks like something that might have fit in with the movie "death race". |
Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
Havent been able to do much, Im out of thinner for the chassis saver and I aint got paid yet. But I did manage to paint the top half of the axle and I got the u-joints out of the axle shafts.
Can anyone tell me exactly what I will need to put the front end back together? I know I need new tie-rods, ball joints, wheel seals, and new u-joints, but what else? |
Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD

Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
Im using chassis saver on the frame and everything else Im painting black. Some parts will be silver just to set it off. And now I drive a 98 firebird t-top v-6 to school. I do miss the hell outta my truck though. Mostly cause Im tired of my knees hitting the steering wheel.

Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD

Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
Got a lot done last night, pulled an all nighter too. Not tired but my back does hurt. Anyway, I sand-blasted, cleaned, and primed my trans cross-member, and the front axle shafts.
Here they are after I wiped them down. Getting ready to prime them. http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...uild/003-1.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...uild/004-1.jpg Here they are after the I primed the top. I still gotta flip them and do the bottom. http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...uild/005-1.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...uild/006-1.jpg And here is what I look like after last night. http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...0Build/001.jpg |
Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
Does anyone have a nice exploded view of the GM 10 bolt front axle? I got a Chiltons manual but I dont understand any of the terms in it. I would like to see a diagram of the axle so I can learn the names of everything. If anyone can help me out with this, I would muchly appriciate it.
Also, here are what the axles look like after I sprayed them semi-gloss black. Turned out pretty good considering they were covered about a inch in grease and mud. http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...0Build/008.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...0Build/009.jpg |
Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
my tip of the day...hang the parts by a coat hanger to spray them.....just my 2 cents, keep up the work
|
Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
Well, just went and talked to a friend of mine. Im getting a whole front clip, hood, both doors, and a tail-gate for free. They only have little knuckle dints in them. Im excited for the new parts. :metal:
|
Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
Just ordered me another sandblaster. :metal: The one I had, it wasnt very good to say the least. I also traded my dad my old Edlebrock carb, so when he gets paid, he his buying me all the stuff I need to put one side of the axle together.
|
Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
OK, as said my dad bought me the parts. Now I got the lower ball joint in tonight after work. But I did find out that my snap ring pliers aint big enough to open the snap ring wide enough to go over the ball joint. So now Im at a stand still till I can get me a set of pliers. Sucks being 17 and having to start buying all your own tools. Oh well, better start collecting now.

Re: Ole Rusty-86 3/4 4WD
Alright, depsite this past weekends events, I did make some progress on the axle. I got it painted and done and just needs to be re-asembled. I got the ball joints pressed in, just aint got around to putting the steering knuckles on. I also got the universals back into the axle shafts. Well here are some pics of the axle.
http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...uild/004-2.jpg This is the axle before paint. Just bare metal in most places. http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...uild/005-2.jpg After the frist close fo Chasis Saver. http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...uild/006-2.jpg Just a close up on how smooth it went. http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...uild/001-2.jpg Then, after the Chasis Saver dried for the past two days, I painted it gloss black for some shine. http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...uild/002-3.jpg. Also this past week, I went and picked up a free tailgate for my truck. http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...uild/001-1.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...uild/002-2.jpg |
