Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

Anyone have an idea on what that might have been? From what I can gather, there were two 6 cylinder engines available in 1960.

And the guy who was the second owner can't remember what engine it had. He got it in 1988 at the age of 12. I know it had a manual transmission because of the high floor hump.

Ronzo, It's got to be the 235 I6 Thriftmaster. The 261 I6 Jobmaster only came in the c60 and up trucks.

I know this thread is a couple years old but I am having trouble decoding my VIN. Its located inside the glove box and it reads as follows. Will also attach a pic. KE141S677566. Title says its a 72 but the rear view is the cab attached type not windshield mounted.

bruceman1968 06-27-2015 06:03 PM

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

Chefk85, Welcome to the board.
You VIN decodes as follows:
KE141S677566
K = 4wd
E = V8
1 = 1/2 ton
4 = pickup
1 = 1971
S = St. Louis assembly plant
677566 = Build Sequence Number. In 1971 all truck BSNs started at 600,000, so your truck was the 77,566th truck to be assigned a BSN at St. Louis in 1971.

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

You are so awesome. thanks bruce. Title says its a 72 but I knew it not to be so ;). Quick reply. I like it. the truck has VERY little rust and a 283ci out of a 68 pickup. almost all original and I picked it up for 1400.00 bucks. It is a welcome addition to our chevy family and I look forward to sharing picks and build progress with you guys.

thanks again,
chefk85 :chevy:

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

The title being off a year is very common as the truck model year was not the same as the calendar year. If you want start a thread on your truck and post some pics. We would love to see it.

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

More important is the door pillar number plate and the frame numbers, they should all agree. But the number provided is in fact a 71 production VIN. Its also among the last of the last built there in 71. The blue door sticker is probably dated 7/71.

And the frame matches too

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

Hmm. The VIN doesn't match the door placard.

Mistake? Or........?

Since everything else is the same I'm guessing it's just a mistake on the door.

Interesting 4X2 70 Blazer.

There is a conflict between the model designation on the VINs, the door pillar plate and the SPID. But everything supports the fact it appears to be an original vehicle with a production typo.
Both VINs should read CS180S156361.

The actual build and options generally break down as:
1970 Blazer 4X2 (CS10514)
250 cid 6 cyl engine (std)
3-speed, column shift, manual trans (std)
Base trim (std)
Driver and passenger HD utility bucket seats (AN3)
White hard top (Z58)
8.25-15/4RP highway tread, tube-type, tires rear and spare (RL2)
G78-15/B highway tread, tube-type, front tires (RL5)
Gold vinyl trim interior (690)
Medium Gold Poly exterior (526)
Painted bumpers front and rear (std)

In all a nice general use truck.
The Gold trim was a one year only option.

Hi All,

I have acquired a chevy truck and I'm having trouble figuring out exactly what it is. I have some paperwork including the original maintenance log with the VIN stamped on the edge and the metal plate I believe originally located in the glove box. Here it is, can someone help me please?

Thanks!

CE338Z130550

Thanks!

The VIN number itself is a fairly basic breakdown, but it does tell us:
C Chevrolet conventional cab truck 4x2
E V-8 engine (does not indicate size)
3 30 series truck, 1 ton
3 Chassis cab, no bed/incomplete
8 1968 model year
Z Fremont CA assembly plant
130550 sequence number of light trucks assembled a Fremont for the 68 MY.

To determine any more we need the SPID label inside the glove box door. That will list the model as manufactured and any RPO or fleet options as well as trim and paint codes

Welcome to the board!

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

Thank you Tim! I'll search for the SPID label.

The chassis cabs were intentionally left off the decoder table since they apply to so few trucks.

Not sure what the question is though. Yes your truck decodes as a factory C/30 V8 157" wheelbase chassis cab. From the options I'd say it was a motorhome at some point, but definitely a Cheyenne/30
