Getting it in the 'paint booth' and primered before the rain comes! Severe thunder storm expected in the northeast today.

Re: 1971 K20 Rat Rod Resurrection
I taped the whole thing up, all the polished parts, so that I could spray the back as well as the strip end headlight buckets on the front. I figured it was unnecessary, but why not clean it up and protect it with some rust oleum.

After 45 mins or so, I sprayed over the primer with VHT Enamel Gloss Black. Got it sprayed and into the garage to set up just before the skies opens up with a thunderous clap and a massive downpour. I will take that as a sign of approval from the gods of my attempt at resurrecting this grille!

Re: 1971 K20 Rat Rod Resurrection
Lots of tape, one can of primer, half a can of VHT enamel, and three bottles of beer! I call that a productive afternoon!

Decent. Some edge leak from the tape but not bad.

This is where you can see the 'before' condition of the grille.

Re: 1971 K20 Rat Rod Resurrection
On the inner grille I used the same paint as I did on the wheels and hubcaps. It is designed for wheels so hopefully a little chip resistant.
I bought a grille hardware kit to replace all the rusty screws and clips. Putting the plastis clips back in to attach the inner grille to the outer was absolutely frustrating. Ultimately I used a dremel to shave down the insert piece and then used a scrap piece of wood to push it into the holes of the outer grille. It took way too long, and way too much effort, to get those in. |
