Re: Project: GOOBER, 1971 GMC

We made it back from Rednecks With Paychecks. Had a few issues but for the most part went well. Not a lot of wheeling to do down there so I only have a couple pictures.

One of the rock faces we played on.

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...psf8693b9b.jpg

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps4083d47b.jpg

And you couldn't avoid some mud.

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps576f0256.jpg

Got some video of my buddies but none of my rig.

And this is video of there little creek run they had.

I had some electrical issues got most of that fixed. Was trying to winch a buddies dead rig out of the rock course and melted the side post out of my optima battery. And now my winch solenoid is stuck in the on position, but I already had a new one so I just need to stick it on. Took about 2 hours to wash that nasty ass mud off the rig. Got to get it ready for the Clayton Pirate meet and greet run coming up next month.

Re: Project: GOOBER, 1971 GMC

I have always read that you should not run your winch hooked up to the side post of a battery, but that's how I have been running one for years. This may have been the hardest I had ever winched before but this was the outcome.

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...psfd598104.jpg

Battery still works fine for now, I guess time will tell. Just running off the top posts for now.

Re: Project: GOOBER, 1971 GMC

Last time we were out I dropped off in a hole that was deeper than expected and my fan went into the mud. I had turned it off just before we hit but didn't realize mud filled up between my fan and radiator. When I turned it back on after coming out of the hole it fried the fan motor. I got it replaced and washed up this weekend.

What I found when I got my fan off.

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...pse5de310a.jpg

New ford tauras fan installed.

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps6b683bb1.jpg

I also wanted to drain my diffs to make sure there wasn't any water in them and that gave me a chance to paint my diff covers.

Pretty much have everything back to 100% and ready for our Clayton trip in April.

Here's the only picture I have of what we got done the first day on my cage. Went over to a friends place that had the bend software to make the complicated bends.

Made a little more progress last night.

Just picked up some new MasterCraft suspenstion seats last night.

Should work well. And this will give me enough room to put a kids racing seat in the middle for my daughter.

Re: Project: GOOBER, 1971 GMC

Picked up a new tire for a spare. Got it as a blemished tire for $300 from interco. Only thing wrong is it doesn't have any lettering on one side.

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps8aca8a14.jpg

On my last outing I thought I might have a front wheel bearing going out so I put it on the lift and found out my kingpins were worn out. So I tore it apart. While I'm in there I will gusset my knuckles, new wheel bearings, protectors for lower kingpin grease zerk, stage 8 locking spindle nuts, and outer axle tube seals. I'm also going to convert to high steer. I've had everything to do the high steer for about 2 years but I just never have done it. After ruining a cylinder last time at Clayton I said I would have it done before I went back, so I figured this was the time to do it. Just waiting on parts now.

Re: Project: GOOBER, 1971 GMC

I thought I would try something to keep my wheel bearings from rusting up on me every time I end up in some water. I always try to stay away from the mud and water but it seems like we end up in it anyways. I drilled and tapped the hub for a grease zerk that is in between the inner and outer bearings and am using marine grease.

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps4f6d9a46.jpg

Here you can the grease coming through the outer bearing and spindle nut.

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps5f0090aa.jpg

Then I installed the locking hub and pumped more grease in until it came around it.

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps61b470eb.jpg

Now the hub is 100% full of marine grease and there should not be any voids for water to get into the bearings. I will pull the grease zerk out and put a plug in there so the wheel will fit back on. There was no sign of grease coming out the inner hub seal either.

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps6facdcf6.jpg

All I have left now is to put the other hub on and fill it full of grease and then I will be ready to start on remounting my steering ram for the highsteer.

Won't the grease expand and get thinner and ooze out while driving? I guess you are usually driving kind of slow, so heat may not be a problem. Still, it's worth a try.

I don't see why it would. The hubs are made to have grease in them from the factory. All I'm doing is filling it completely full of grease. Seals hold it in there and it should never get that warm if the preload on the bearings is set right. And I don't ever drive to fast.

Re: Project: GOOBER, 1971 GMC

Looks great !

Close tolerance / clearance; if it becomes an issue later on ya’ might want to consider placing bump stops between spring perch(s) and frame rail.

I had a similar problem with a 28,000 GVW boom truck which we installed Hy-rail gear on so it could operate on RR tracks. Because of reduced suspension travel we extended the mounts on bump stops thus eliminating the hitting/rubbing issues. :banghead:

I already have bumps on front and back. You can see one of the rubbers in the 3rd picture behind the tie rod on top of the spring plate. That was with it flexed out setting on the bump.

Re: Project: GOOBER, 1971 GMC

We made it down to the river and set up camp. We were watching the water for a couple of hours and decided we better move the camper a little further away. It was coming up quick. About half way through the day my rig made a pop sound like the tcase popped out of gear and I lost all movement. I was setting on flat ground and just tried to start going when it happened. Pretty sure it's my intermediate shaft on my double transfer case set up. So I had to be dragged back to the camper and we pushed it backwards to get it hooked up so we could move it, since I was the only one with a hitch.

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps90e74ba0.jpg

Picture of our camp after the move.

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps2fac71ec.jpg

Then we had to get me loaded up the next day with the camper still in tow.

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps52404eaf.jpg

I've got it in the shop now. Hope to get it pulled tonight and see exactly what is the problem.

Know the feeling,

I had/heard a “pop” in a similar situation one time in my 76’ FJ-40 small block. I Had cracked my transfer case (case)in half. Cost $800.00 in 1978~$ to replace it w/new.

I hope your luck is better than mine...:waah:

If it is the shaft that I'm thinking about, it will be the second time for it to brake. The other time is when I had this setup in a jeep. If it is that then I'm going to spend the $300 to get the aftermarket beefier designed shaft and not put a stocker back in like I did last time.

It is a Jed's steel doubler, 203-205

i have heard about those resplined shafts breaking, but a new hardened one ought to do you good. its a pain in the ass to pull my ord doubler. your adapter is steel!

jgammill 07-30-2013 11:08 AM

Re: Project: GOOBER, 1971 GMC

I found my problem. I believe it is called the intermediate shaft coming from the NP203 gear box. The splines twisted pretty good before it let go. Waiting for ORD to open this morning so I can give them a call and see if they have something better than stock. I have another case I could rob it out of but would rather upgrade while I'm in there.

Re: Project: GOOBER, 1971 GMC

Got the doubler all back together with another factory resplined shaft from Jed's. That's the only way to get another shaft and he had to make it for me. I should be good cause I really thing I must have shifted the wrong case iin first and that caused to much torque on the shaft. I won't do that again.

We decided to go to Clayton over the labor day weekend and had a pretty good time. To bad it was 108 degrees during the day! We had already decided that we would just be night wheeling anyways. Pulled in at midnight Friday, unloaded, set up camp, and went wheeling. We didn't pull back into camp until 7am. No breakage that night so we just hung out in the camper in the ac all day sleeping and bsing. Went back out Saturday evening about 6 and wheeled until 2 of the rigs in our group had major problem. One smashed the tranny pan and broke the shifter off the side of the case. The other one had a link mount rip off the frame and then on the way down his tcase took a ****. But I made it out without any carnage except for a few more dents in the old girl.

We only got a few pic all weekend and very little video since we were mainly night wheeling. Here's where I was starting in to try the ledge. Never had tried before cause I never thought it would fit.

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...psd789f3fd.jpg

I had to hit it at a hard angle to get the bumper to clear so I could get started up it.

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps5b817102.jpg

Got most the way up without much issue.

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps9c33858e.jpg

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps2aaa1b34.jpg

Then when my belly bottomed out it allowed the rear end to slide to the passenger side, witch put the top of my bed corner right under the big rock behind me. No way to back out. So we figured to try and winch it and make it pivot back to clear the bed. I thought it was going to rip the whole bed side down but it came out alright. I'm just glade they put the tailgate down cause it would have ripped it down. Just a couple more dents.

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...pse696862d.jpg

Then on top of the mountain it got a little sideways. Picture doesn't do it justice.

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...psf3d27ba1.jpg

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps0fff8b8b.jpg

Was able to drive out of it.

We had a good little group of rigs with us.

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps6ab702e1.jpg

We definitely will not be going back during the heat of the summer like that again though. Ended up coming home a day soon since the other 2 guy were broke.
