tonight I painted five 7" rally wheels; two coats of satin black and two coats of gray/silver on the front for Dads' 79 GMC build. The 3 20x20 filter bank did an awesome job. The closet behind the filters where the fan exits outside, didn't even smell of paint. I also made several trips to the back of the garage and smelled nothing. We'll see how it does when I start epoxying cab etc?? Mike
Pictures 1. Filters catching overspray. I put a towl down on my shop stool and place each rally on the stool for painting, worked great as I painted and rotated the wheel. 2. More on filters. I'm very happy with the results. Thanks Mike |
Re: Sparky's 1978 Silverado Build "Addiction"
The setup you have there looks like it's working awesome Mike! Nice work!

Re: Sparky's 1978 Silverado Build "Addiction"
In fact, your not that far from me, maybe you would be interested in doing some rust repair, and a paint job on my 85 gmc???
|
Re: Sparky's 1978 Silverado Build "Addiction"
Hahahaha ha ha! I’ll screw up the 78 first!

Been working on getting the frame ready for media blasting. Welded the frame together and reinstalled the Built by Brooks LWB to SWB kit, also installed the C-Notch(s). I still have a few more holes to drill on the C-Notch and a few additional ones on Built by Brooks kit. Once all together, I'll send to media blasting. Will have to clean the front x-member of all the oils etc before blasting. When the frame is back from blasting, I'll weld the perimeter of the Built by Brooks bracket then paint the frame and associated pieces and the core support, then start putting it all together again and transition back to body work. I'm in a rush to get this thing rolling before Jayson is finished with the 79.

Very nice rust repair and nice work on the truck in general. I really like your paint fan/filter set up. Where did you source the fan from?

Had a great day at the swap meet today!!!! The fender was picked up today but not at the swap meet (site member here in Iowa). Can't believe how clean the tailgate bands are. The black marks on them is just dirt/grass and they are somewhat dusty, can't really find any dings, few hairline scratches. Picked up some hub-caps; they are kind of cool. What I believe to be NOS fender trim (L/R), NOS tailgate trim and two pieces of NOS bed trim (LWB and SWB upper, 1 each), gas cap (didn't have one for my 78) and some misc stuff.
What I'm calling NOS trim is stamped "Made in Canada" and the sticky tabs are unused???? Am I correct on my call???? Fender trim is questionable. It's in fender wrapper remnants (GM) but the sticky tabs are missing and no other marking (made in Taiwan etc)?? Regardless, not too bad for under $150 or so. Mike |
Re: Sparky's 1978 Silverado Build "Addiction"
Definitely nice scores you got at the swap meet. I found nothing I needed there.

Finally got the frame to a point where I can take it to the blaster along with the core support, and front crossmember!! Probably will take it Monday. I need to get this thing rolling!!! Will need a few cans of brake cleaner to get the rest of the grime off of the front crossmember!! Mike

Re: Sparky's 1978 Silverado Build "Addiction"
Mike, who are you going to take it to? I saw yesterday there is a place in Johnston that does sand blasting. I have no idea how good or reasonable they are though.
|
Re: Sparky's 1978 Silverado Build "Addiction"
Wes Jarnagin. They did my core support and wheels. Reasonable. We'll see what the price is like on this stuff.???

Re: Sparky's 1978 Silverado Build "Addiction"
Just an FYI, Easy Off oven cleaner in the yellow can is great for removing grease and grime from frames and crossmembers. Just don't expect any paint to survive...lol
Don't use the stuff in the white can, it does not work very well. I have found the dollar store brand works OK, but might take a can or two more for the same results. |

Been sidelined with other stuff lately, but finally got around to dropping off my frame and misc parts last week - picked it up this morning and brought it home. I plan on spraying some epoxy tomorrow after a little welding on the c-notch bracket and LWB to SWB bracket. My goal it to get thing rolling before Jayson finishes up on Dad's 79 GMC???????????? Mike

Sprayed some epoxy this morning on the media blasted parts, went OK. Need to flip the frame over and epoxy the other side. Put some new exhaust filters in this morning before starting to paint, they seem to have worked!!! Mike

Re: Sparky's 1978 Silverado Build "Addiction"
Looks good my friend. I remember when I was down that low with my frame. One of the good things about where you are now is that every part you put back on is clean.
And you are almost done...only thing left, is to finish. Ha ha Bubba |

While I have a little time before some commitments, I took apart some stainless trim from a few grilles and surrounds and am taking it a guy that will do his magic on the dings and then polish it. I'm taking a set of door drip rails as well. I will post pics when I get the pieces of stainless back. Mike

Re: Sparky's 1978 Silverado Build "Addiction"
Nice work getting the pieces primed and painted!

Re: Sparky's 1978 Silverado Build "Addiction"

Should I replace this upper control arm stud? The rest of the upper control arm bolts are good. Thanks Mike

Re: Sparky's 1978 Silverado Build "Addiction"
Yes, there are two studs on both sides that attach the upper control arm to the crossmember / frame. Should press in like a wheel stud.
|
Re: Sparky's 1978 Silverado Build "Addiction"
I'd replace it. Looking at the threaded portion, it appears in the picture that it has been stretched, and the corrosion has reduced its diameter in the unthreaded portion.
Better to do it now while you have it apart! |
