So let me get this straight, all of the engine (except acc.) will sit behind the front wheels centerline? That will be a freaking riot to drive...

FF looking back through your thread, i just noticed that you have the master cylinder on it's side. are you planning to run a remote tank? and how did you calculate the brake pedal pin location? without the booster so that the brakes won't be too hard to use?

Yes it is turned 90* and I will be building/using/mod'ing a custom reservoir which will mount on top of the MC with feed tubes down to the inlet ports. Should bleed fine with the normal bench bleeding procedure.

I don't have the measurements in front of me but I moved the clevis up 1/2". That was as far as it could go and still get full stroke on the MC given the pedal/floor room. Add to that the fact that the s2000 weighs 33% more than the Minx (2800 v 2100), and I expect the pedal feel to be somewhere between power and manual brakes. Should be fine, but I can always make improvements if needed (that's my standard answer if you haven't noticed ).

That's good to hear. I've never driven or been a passenger in one, so I'm not sure what to expect. I know they're quick and the drivetrains are pretty highly respected.

You will need some wide tires in the back. I shift right below the red line 8,000. The engine really kicks in at 5-6000 rpms. 80 miles an hour in fourth at about 6500. Fun, fun fun.

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

Well, I went with a higher (numerically lower) rear ratio 3.73 vs. the S2000's 4.10, combined with a lighter overall package I'm hoping the 235/40/17's will be just about right (they should break loose when I want them to).

that's cool FF. something for me to try later on. i was thinking now that my corolla swap is done, i can get back on my nova. i scored a set of disc brake spindles with rotors. just needs calipers and i was hoping to use the dodge power wagon disc master i got. no room for a booster in my nova as well. are you planning to use a combo valve on the minx?

Proportioning valve? I'm going to use the S2000 prop-valve since I will have all the other brake components from the car.

I've been doing the mortgage broker scavenger hunt for about a week while I should have been in the shop!
:but:
I've been out there! I've even taken a few pics ...But nothing worth showing by themselves. I started making the initial cuts in the front frame rails for the S2000 rail sections to go in. I also removed one of the inner fender braces and jacked up the inner fender a little bit in the process ...but all is fixable. More to come.

Well, I got one frame section removed and one S2000 section trimmed down and nearly fitting. I took pics, but the computer is tied up at the moment (I'm using my phone), so I'l post them tomorrow. It's not very pretty to look at right now. Kinda reminds me of the time I had a gaping hole in the side of my Burb : LOL:

Pics of carnage. The last two with the S2000 section sitting there are just that; sitting there. It will be moved outboard another couple inches.

You sure have a puzzle there. Looks like some good progress.

I need to do something like that to my VW "NOBACK", but I would like to put a flathead in the front.

Keep up the great work.

Even though I called it the clown car I do dig it. Especially now that its gunna have motivation and carving abilities.

I was curious about the shifter and what your doing there. The box part you cut off so you could shorten the shaft going back on somehow in the new forward location? or is this something you can fab up a suitable replacment?

As always your doing killer work.

I do have 1 tiny request though. Ditch that ugly black roof rack and find somting in chrome or stainless. Kinda like old VW roof racks. It would fit the car way better than that "euro trash" looking one. lol I guess the whole car is european though isnt it. :haha:

EDIT: dont worry bout the rack till after the swap LMAO

Jvsapp 06-11-2009 09:51 PM

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

i like the roof racks. they add to the sleeper look. also they are a nice place to store the hood ;) i am looking for roof racks for my nova too. that way i can strap 2 surfboards on the top of it and cruise the breaks here.

Frizzle Fry 06-12-2009 12:53 AM

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

Thanks OB.

Shifter: the enclosure will be moved forward, bolted on with custom brackets, and the shift rod shortened accordingly.

Roof rack: Yes I will go with a vintage style rack when the time comes ;) In fact I have a VW rack with wood slats I may restore/mod to fit.

Thanks for the backup Jvsapp

I made some more progress last night. Basically just more cutting/trimming to get the frame section and crossmember closer to fitting. I ended up needing to make a C-Notch in the Minx frame to clear the rear/lower arm mount. Pics to follow...

original_balzer 06-12-2009 08:39 PM

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

The vintage VW rack with wood would look killer on there.
I didnt mean to sound like I didnt like a roof rack at all just something other than the modern one.

I thought of 1 more tiny thing. Use a muffler that wont make it sound like a ricer. But knowing you theres no way it would sound like a fart cannon, so m probably safe there.

Frizzle Fry 06-12-2009 09:29 PM

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

I'm not really sure what type of muffler will give it the non-rice sound but I won't be happy till I find it. Initial plans are to run the full length header the engine came with, 2.5" pipe into a 40 series flowmaster I have in the parts bin, and a long tail pipe all the way back. Hopefully it'll have a decent sound, but I'll swap mufflers more than once if needed.

Jvsapp 06-12-2009 10:09 PM

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

hence the reason my 20V corolla has the stock muffler under it. i was contemplating a stock subaru WRX muffler. i mean stock they flow 260HP so it should be sufficient for my car, yet still quiet. but the flowmaster 40 will add a little growl there. just stay away from the import N1 style mufflers. those are the fart cans that are obnoxious and loud.

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

A buddy of mine build a 1989 nissan 240sx for drag racing and swapped in a turbo engine from the jap equilivant car. I couldnt tell ya what size the engine was but it was a 4 cyl rear wheel drive.

ANYWAY he had an exhaust cutout for racing but on the street he used this muffler and it had a deep throaty sound like a little corvette. I recall him telling me it was a cheapo from autozone or something.

http://www.holley.com/types/Raptor.asp

I tried one on my 2.8L v6 S-10 pickup, and it sounded good as well. I noticed it was fairly quiet until I got into the upper RPMs. Just a sugestion.

Oh by the way mine was 2.5" inlet/outlet.

the issue with subaru exhaust is the cat's.. the muffler will free up tonsof power when you drop it (on a subaru) but it's thecat system that totally neuters thecar..
once you do intake and exhaust it is a beast...
sorry.. subarus come secondto chevy's

Makes me wonder if FF is gonna use the kitty or not. my 20V corolla i lucked out i had a high flow cat from my OBX header i had on the original motor sitting in a box. the header that came with my clip was larger than the stock one so all i had to do was slot the holes on the high flow one and it bolted up.

dammitmitchell 06-13-2009 02:56 AM

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

all i can say from my stint with imports is that the CAT is the worse part..
but man i LOVE subaru mufflers.. it's like bassani it's soooo .. i dunno.. distinct..
not to hijack..
fry i WOULD NOT run a magna flow.. they have gotten expensive and are toooooooo quiet... i hear the intake on my buddies built ranger before i hear the exhaust and that bugs me..make me thing of a honda civic..
just my .02
