Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Update!! Happy New Year gang!
Well, still waiting on the body shop for my cab. Yup been slow goin and totally shut down my progress. It is pretty cold now and until I have the cab, really no reason to freeze my ass off. I am yet again very frustrated with this body shop thing. I just don't get it…….. I did fit the truck bed to the frame and checked clearances for my fuel filler neck and looks like things are going to line up perfect. The filler door and neck that was fabbed into the bed is from an F100 so it's a filler/vent combo neck. I think I will just take the vent line from aluminum tank and put a filter on it since it doesn't need to be attached to anything. Hopefully 2014 will be the year to actually be driving this thing. I just can't imagine why that wouldn't be the case. So, hopefully more to come soon. Wish me luck!! Chris |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
UPDATE - Oh the horror!
Stopped by the ol'e body shop last week hoping to see the truck in primer. Nope! It hadn't been touched since the holidays. So. I decided since it has been nearly 8 months since I brought my cab to them, and considering that I still have a bed, doors, hood, and front clip yet to be painted, it's time to go. Yes, I realize that these things take time but F' them. So, I got a lead from another restorer about a guy who works from his home. I was informed that I would have to wait a while, but that once my time came up in line, my truck would be the only thing he would be working on. Sounds good to me I say. After a few calls I was set up. So staring in March, I will begin hauling my truck piece by piece over to his shop. On top of all this I have back surgery for a herniated disc coming up. Bummer! Timing is everything. More to come... |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Too bad about the body shop putting your project aside, seems to be a common issue with a lot of people on this board. 8 months is a joke. But still good to see the updates and great progress coming along and being able to start it for the first time is a great milestone. This project is inspiration for others following along.

Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
UPDATE!
Well after a year and a half of suffering from sciatic pain, I finally got back surgery. Bummer! So for the last 6 weeks I have been hobbling around waiting for things to heal up. Now I'm feeling 100% better and ready to get cracking on this truck again. So with that out of the way… "Operation body shop," has now reached a new mile stone, my 4th body shop! What the… in order to get this thing done before 2017 I have decided to go the way of specialists. So I am now using a metal and body guy as my first stop, then a painter only for the second stop. The cab, hood, doors, fenders and cowl arrived at the painter on friday. Picking paint on Monday and this week the bed and tailgate go to the body guy for a little filler work. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...%3B25%3Aot1lsi So, in anticipation of the paint being done some time this year (Lol), I started rebuilding my vent windows. I read and watched a few tutorials, but all in all seemed pretty straight forward. I did not buy the vent window rebuild kit. I instead used steel pop rivets and hammered them flat. The result was pretty strong. LMC rubber was decent quality and fit. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...%3A25%3Aot1lsi I'll post some more pictures when I do the passengers side. Next up is the window regulators. Just gonna clean them up and lube. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...A5925%3Aot1lsi Now that the weather is warm again and once I get the cab back, all hell will break loose on further work. Stay tuned... |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Hope your healing up well and get back to your project soon !!!

Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Hey thanks Gary! As soon as i see paint on my truck I am sure 'll be instantly healed.

Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Bodywork progress!!!! Whatttttt!
Well, we're getting closer to paint. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...%3A25%3Aot1lsi Cab is in primer and being blocked out. Fenders, hood, doors, and cowl are ready for paint. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...%3B25%3Aot1lsi I also picked a new paint color today and had it mixed at the request of the painter so no turning back now. I will not reveal that color until the paint is done though. At this point I am cautiously ecstatic!!! More to show soon I hope! |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Looks like you have the right body guy now. I just stop by my body guys place yesterday and mentioned your situation to him about this being your 4th shop. He said it's common, the guys have good intentions but take on too much or just don't have good work ethics or motivation to get things done !
He's going to start working on my bed next week now that I have my chassis almost ready to have the body set on it. Progress!!!! That's a good thing !!! Gary |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Got a little more done wit the vent windows. Here are a few pics of the process. This is about the size of the rivets that are steel.
http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...%3B34%3Bnu0mrj I drilled all the rivets out, but left the pivot hinge rivet in place as suggested by some other forum members. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...3C334%3Bnu0mrj First thing I did after disassembly was replace the window stop rubber. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...%3B34%3Bnu0mrj http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...3C534%3Bnu0mrj After cleaning up the frame, I had to slide the new rubber over the frame before installing new pop rivets. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...3C734%3Bnu0mrj In order to get the new rubber seal installed, I had to bend the ends of the window stop rubber up just a bit. This facilitates the new rubber seal which inserts over the edge of the window stop. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...3C934%3Bnu0mrj I then installed a few pop rivets from both sides to attach the window frame to the window slide rail. I hammered them flat and that made them tight. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...88734%3Bnu0mrj Rivets before being flattened on inside of slide rail. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...%3B34%3Bnu0mrj This is where the new window seal slides over the window stop rubber. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...%3A25%3Aot1lsi Before pushing the new rubber into the frame I riveted the window hinge back to the frame. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...%3B34%3Bnu0mrj Holding the Frame while pounding the rivets was a bit tricky, but not too tough a job. |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Well, while waiting for my paint to be done. I had my glove box bead blasted along with some other miscellaneous parts that will need matching new paint. Consequently, I had to remove my old build SPID sticker on the inner glovebox.
http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...%3C25%3Aot1lsi I use photoshop for work so decided to take a high resolution picture of the sticker and clean it up in photoshop as well as make the printed portion bolder. There was a lot of fade and discoloration after all these years. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...%3A34%3Bnu0mrj I then took the finished file to fedex office and had them print it on a thin card stock with clear self laminating sticker. The result was a very clean color copy of the original in the exact same size ready to stick on the new paint and was $4.50. No it's not a perfect reproduction of the original sticker, and won't win you any awards if that's your thing, but it's not expensive and looks exactly like the original would have in 1972. I was slightly worried about fading, but it doesn't see much light inside the glovebox and today's inks are a hell of a lot better then they were in 1972. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...%3B25%3Aot1lsi If a perfect reproduction is what you need there are forum members that do that. Love it when a plan works. Chris |

Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
A few more odd and ends of progress. Had a few hours yesterday and cleaned up many parts. Filler cap was raw metal as were several parts.
http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...3C334%3Bnu0mrj Door regulators http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...3C334%3Bnu0mrj I rebuilt my e-brake cable brackets so they pull slightly inward toward the center of the truck. This ensures the cable stays in the caliper E-brake bracket. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...3A334%3Bnu0mrj http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...39625%3Aot1lsi test fitted the tailgate with new hardware. Looks good. Hopefully the bed will go out next week for bodywork. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...%3A25%3Aot1lsi |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
All those little things add up. I've done a lot of the same type of stuff getting things ready to be installed. Window regulators painted & new rollers, window tracks all blasted & painted. I'll soon be rebuilding my vent windows. I was thinking about getting a rivet squeezer off ebay for the vent windows & the rivets for the grille, then resell it when I'm done.
Good to see your able to get out there and keep the project moving forward !!! Gary |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
WE HAVE COLOR!!!!!!! Wahooooo!, Yipeeeee! The clouds parted, the sun is a shinin and we have color!!! The cab has yet to be color sanded and buffed, but fenders, doors, cowl and hood are ready for pickup.
http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...34725%3Aot1lsi http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...34825%3Aot1lsi http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...34925%3Aot1lsi And the color is... Root beer. This is a root beer pearl color from Honda a element. A nice dark brown, that explodes in the sunlight. I sprung a little extra for a high end clear and a lot of it to make buffing in the future a possibility. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...%3A25%3Aot1lsi I will take more pics when the sun is actually out, but looks good. I should be swapping the cab for the bed next week. So, the cab is the first thing back on. I also got my push button start this week which will replace the original keyed start. Nice thing about this is I can add security to it later and other modules if I decide to add power locks or windows. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...%3B25%3Aot1lsi http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...A4325%3Aot1lsi |

Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
MORE PAINT!!!
Hi all, well the sun was out the morning so here are a few pics that show the color off a bit more. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...38234%3Bnu0mrj http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...47525%3Aot1lsi http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...47625%3Aot1lsi Also, today pulled the trans/tranfer again. Thought I was done with that nonsense, but…. After weeks of banging my head against the wall about a solution for the clutch fork not having a boot, I broke down and decided to just change the damn bell housing. So I pulled the trans and will be using a newer gm truck type housing #460468. This should give me a wider clutch fork hole and it will accommodate a 12 inch clutch. Too bad I swapped the 12" for a 11" months ago. Oh well, live and learn. i wanted to get this done so I can put the cab on the frame as soon as possible and didn't want to be messing around with this from underneath. So, onward! |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild

Great progress! Like the color too!
|
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
So, a little progress on the bell housing. I picked up a 486 bell housing on ebay and got her prepped to go back on.
http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...45325%3Aot1lsi http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...%3B34%3Bnu0mrj This bellhousing is going to do the trick I think. It fits the SM465 and has a much wider hole for the clutch fork. It also measures the exact same height as the cast iron bell housing. I did need to drill out the lower attach holes so the housing could be bolted on the bottom from inside the housing, but other than that, will be a good fit. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...74325%3Aot1lsi http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...53534%3Bnu0mrj Hopefully this will end the adapter phase of the build for the trans/motor. Tuesday I should be reinstalling the trans and with some more luck the cab next week. Whoaaa that would be nice! |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Andddd, we're re-installed. This has to be the easiest, knock on wood, trans install yet. literally slid right into place.
http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...34925%3Aot1lsi Now plenty of space for the clutch fork boot. Mission accomplished. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...%3C25%3Aot1lsi I checked on the cab, but still not color sanded. Hopefully I'll hear something this week. |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Mo-paint
Well, after some badgering, my paint guy finally finished up the cab. Got it back to the garage this morning. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...46425%3Aot1lsi http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...46325%3Aot1lsi I am awaiting lizard skin to do the inner floor/firewall before I install the cab. I also flipped the bed up on it's edge so I can convert the surface rust. I decided I am going to do the raptor spray in bedliner underneath the bed instead of the more expensive line-x. It has received a lot of good reviews via various forums. I will do the line-x on the top side of the bed instead. I am waiting for materials, but will get that done and then the bed will go off for bodywork and paint. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...46525%3Aot1lsi Thankfully, I can get the cab on and start putting Reno back together. I am praying my budget will hold out. It's gonna be close. |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Your cab looks great! That root beer color is really growing on me. What product do you plan to use to convert the surface rust on your bed floor? I may have missed a post, but are you planning to use seam sealer before applying the lizard skin?
|
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Quote:
I am using Corroseal rust converter since you apply it, it converts then becomes a primer. One step process. I then plan to paint the underneath of the bed with Sherwin Williams Corothane 1 as a binder for my spray-in bedliner. You can use that stuff on bare metal and many of the Line-x dealers use it as a binder before spraying the line-x bedliners. I hope it works as well on the raptor product, but t's a urethane product that has excellent adhesions properties to just about anything As for the lizard skin, no seam sealer planned. Just a little scuff and spray. I'm doing insulation and sound deadened. Doesn't seem like a lot of people have used this on trucks in this forum so I am going to cover my experience here well and try and get decent pics. |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Looking Good !!!
Your catching up to me so I'll have to pickup the pace a bit..... "LOL" |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Thanks for the tip on the Corothane. I have the same plan for the underside of bed and cab, but was thinking of applying over epoxy primer. I'll have to look into this.

Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
A little more progress…
I completed the bell housing and clutch fork saga today with a boot. Checked off list http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...B9925%3Aot1lsi Lizard skin and raptor showed up. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...C3725%3Aot1lsi Cab floor is prepped for lizard skin. I ordered a Devilbis drier/filter for my air systems so going to install before i start spraying anything. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...C3525%3Aot1lsi As discussed here on the forums, used foam ear plugs for all the vital holes. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...C3625%3Aot1lsi I also started modifying the location of the transfer case shift stick. it turned out to be way too close to the trans shifter so I am making a small bracket to position the shift knob back a couple inches. Should be done today. More to come. Should be installing cab next week. |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Reading intently! Nice work!
|
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
More progress.
Finished the bracket to locate the transfer case shifter a few inches back. Not my prettiest work, but it's solid. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...88434%3Bnu0mrj First coat of lizard skin sound deadening is down. Looks pretty good, but It took a bit to get is to spray evenly. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...97625%3Aot1lsi I did a test spray and it was a little clumpy until I leaned out the nozzle. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...97725%3Aot1lsi This is the nozzle position I used for final coats that sprayed evenly. I ended up doing a light first coat, let it dry and then did a very heavy coat. 1 gallon did the cab floor, firewall and a small portion of the rear cab. If you want it thick 1 gallon will not do it. Tomorrow I will spray 2 coats of the ceramic insulation. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...97825%3Aot1lsi |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
So wrapped up lizard skin application yesterday. I ended up doing 2 coats of sound deadener and 2 coats of ceramic insulation. The texture ended up being dimpled and rough to the touch. Here is the finished cab
http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...74425%3Aot1lsi The color looks grey on the pics, but it is more like dark charcoal. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...3A325%3Aot1lsi As some others have reported the ceramic insulation goes a lot further than the sound deadener. It also dries very fast. By the time I got the first coat sprayed I began spraying the second coat. The sound deadener was a different story. It took much longer than the manufacturer said for it to dry and even after letting the last heavy coat sit overnite it was damp in the morning. All in all though seemed to go on easy and turned out as described. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...3A325%3Aot1lsi I then turned my attention to rust converting the underneath of the bed. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...3A525%3Aot1lsi there was not a ton of rust but bed has been sitting for almost a year in bare metal. I used my paint gun as the corroseal is almost thick like paint. Went on perfect. Here is before and after. http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...46525%3Aot1lsi http://images2.snapfish.com/23232323...3A425%3Aot1lsi today i will spray the corothane on the underneath of the bed and then raptor the entire underneath of bed. So far so good. |
