Hey can anyone help rideblue00 out with some pics. Surely someone has dismantled one of these tachs

So finally have some internal pics of the Bosch version Tach. I put it in my lathe and hit my 90* angle grinder to it as it was spinning....slow. And the ring seperated easily. No heat to speak of from it either. I was wondering if its the same internals of the reproduction tachs being sold in all the parts catalogs. Not sure, but its a pretty simple setup. Its not a direct drop in, but close. I have also picked up 2 older versions of the Sun tach also. These do not need Transmitters. They are heavy duty tachs. Ill try and post some pics of those also.

I am converting my cluster lighting to LED's. Does the Bosch tach have the same type lamp as the factory ones? If not, does the bulb look like it can retrofitted to an LED?

Very nice work BTW!

Re: My tach install thread

Im not sure. I will be back in the workshop Saturday morning and ill check the lighting setup in it.

Re: My tach install thread

It has an led already on it. Not sure how to retrofit it. Not sure on the color of it either as i haven't put power to it.

Re: My tach install thread

Cool! I read a review somewhere that it was green. I'm installing all green in my cluster. One less thing I might need to do.

Thanks for the info!

Can anyone comment on the color of the new Bosch Tach light?

Re: My tach install thread

OK, am I that stupid? Got the tach today and can't take it apart! The face plate is crimped around the cup. The first time the instructions mention it being removed it says "Leave tachometer out of the cup for now." ????

The last paragraph says how to install the tach in the cup.

I know I am probably going to gut it like you did rideblue00 but pwrbrkpadguy said he didn't have to cut his apart.

Not really sure how one could connect the wires without removing the cup anyway...

Re: My tach install thread

I did not gut my original setup. I designed my bracket to fit the sealed unit. The pics i posted are for someone elses project. They are referring to the cup as the bracket it comes with, its designed to be mounted on the steering column with a hose clamp.

OK I can see by your pic you trimmed off the crimped metal of the face plate that's around the INNER housing. My face plate is crimped around the outer housing, (cup).

The instructions show the cup as the chrome outer housing BTW.

Re: My tach install thread

Going back, I can also see in your second post it clearly shows the face plate crimped around the inner housing. I really think someone assembled everything first and then crimped the face plate around the chrome cup and inner housing!

Also noticed that T2vigil tach is constructed differently than yours. I'm sure which one I have since I believe I read in this post that we are talking two different manufacturers during the time this thread has been alive.

Re: My tach install thread

Yes Sunpro and now Bosch. Both tachs appear the same. Show more pics of the back and fronts also please

Re: My tach install thread

T2vigil did his almost at the same time. They are the same tach

Not much else to see. I noticed the back of mine appears the same as both of yours.

Now, if I keep this tach, it's obvious I need to grind off the face plate to get the cup off. What that leaves me with is the question. Like T2vigil's with the housing and no face plate or like the other one you gutted. You said you did that one for someone else. How did you mount it?

Re: My tach install thread

Got the face plate cut off. I used a lathe like you did. Based on T2vigil's pics I thought he painted the perimeter ring assuming it was metal. I see it's actually a rubber gasket gripping the edge of the glass. (Maybe he just painted the visible portions of the inner housing.) Mine's also not sealed to the tach. The face plate presses the gasket against the inner housing. Looks just the pics you posted a few threads back.

I also assumed the glass/gasket was more or less attached to the inner housing. I'm hoping he'll see this thread and chime in as I would like to see what he did. I originally planned to use the glass to keep the tach dust-free but I might just install it as is. Or maybe a good application of rubber cement might hold it in place? I can install the tach so it is pushing against the cluster front to help hold it.

Anyway, I don't think there is any reason to disassemble it any further. Now to check the light setup.

Excellent! There are actually three SMD LEDs for illumination. I should be all set!

As a side note, the interior sure is messy. Lots of solder flux and even a layer of dust on large capacitors. I gently put the shop air to it and I'm sure I saw some debris flying off of it!

damnyankee36 02-22-2017 09:58 PM

Re: My tach install thread

BTW, how did you fabricate/form the mounting ring on your early prototype that the back of tach actually mounts to?

Ever find a clock?

rideblue00 02-22-2017 10:34 PM

Re: My tach install thread

I currently have a 63 cluster I'm installing a tach in for a customer and i was going to use black RTV to seal the rubber gasket to the housing.

As far as the prototype, i cut the ring in the lathe and had the plate with the holes plasma cut. The reason i changed the process was because it was too consuming to make that small ring. Was easier to machine it from one pc of aluminum.

Re: My tach install thread

I'm thinking your tach was assembled wrong. when you take those 2 nuts off the back, its supposed to separate. Thats how you wire it. So yours was totally crimped together?

rideblue00 02-22-2017 10:42 PM

Re: My tach install thread

I have not put any more time into finding a clock. I found a guy on ebay selling clusters with clocks and i asked him some questions about them...he said they were super special made and cost $300. I'm skeptical, but ok to each his own.

Yep, totally and permanently assembled. At least until I got a hold of it. I bought it from Amazon. I'm gonna see about getting the word out by giving a review that there may be a bad batch of them on the shelf.

Have you mounted the tach without the face plate on yet? Did you use the bracket from rideblue00?

Yes, I sure did. I didn't use his plate design because without the face plate, the tach installs into the cluster further by about maybe 1/4" just guessing. So I made a plate with a narrower ring. I included four tabs to secure it. It's not as fancy but it's very secure.

My plan was to upload a few pics but haven't gotten to it. Soon I hope.

Thanks...would love to see...I don't want the face plate on the tach...I think it will look cleaner. Agree?

Re: My tach install thread

Yes, I think it does look better. I also RTV'd the glass and rubber gasket on the housing just for more dust protection. The rubber also gives it a bit of cushion against the front of the cluster.
