FINALLY!!! got something accomplished on ol' blue today thanks to dragonwrecker. took the rear end out and swapped the 4" drop shackles back to the stock ones. then we flipped the axle by chopping off the spring brackets and relocating them to the bottom of the axle tubes, so it would ride on top of the springs instead of under, to get the 5"s of drop i need for a level ride (she now has a 3/5 drop). when we test fitted the rear end it was hitting the bump stops under full load so we ended up notching and boxing the frame over the rear end. i still have to finish fabricating the box on the drivers side and get everything mounted back up. i figured while i was at it i would give the rear end some new hardware since the u-bolts were quite rusty and one broke when we tried to remove them. i will try to get back out tomorrow to finish it up since i did all i could handle today still being all gimped up. its great to have best friends to help. they are invaluable. dragonwrecker....soon as i heal up all the way we gotta get some stuff done on dragons breath. THANKS AGAIN BROTHER!

well the frame and suspension are finally done. now i have to have my driveshaft cut down because of the difference from it being below the springs to now being on top of the springs. other than that, all that is left on this part is to clean and paint the frame and rear end. she is riding right now :metal: the next fabrication job is the back window. it will probably be a while for that until i can come up with the money for donor parts. but this was a BIG step in ol' blue being finished.

[QUOTE=dragginmetal;5509065]Did you relocate your axle back ¾”-1”? This usually fixes that and it puts the rear wheels back center of the wheel wells.
Attachment 962288 no i didnt. i put them back on like they came off. i didnt measure the tire in the wheel wells before hand. i guess i took for granted that they were centered from the factory. this is my first time doing an axle flip. so by your pic it looks like i measure forward 1" from the center of the existing holes and drill new ones? and on the plate that goes between the top of the u bolt and the spring...will that still allow the u bolt to properly seat on that plate? it looks like your hole is drilled in the seat rise. and with the holes being offset will the retention strength still be there? |

we sat the bed on just to see how the new ride height looks. its dark but i will post a daylight picture tomorrow.

Re: Project Ol' Blue
after looking, i see now that it actually did move the rear end a little bit forward in the wheel well. i never would have figured simply flipping the axle would alter the placement that much. i have to say that i am intrigued in this learning experience. thank you so much for your input dragginmetal. you have taught me something.

The U-Bolts sit where the red lines are. Attachment 962347 it looks like your hole is drilled in the seat rise. Yes and with the holes being offset will the retention strength still be there?[QUOTE] I dont know but every "Flip-Kit" on the market pulls the rear end back. |
Re: Project Ol' Blue
thank you very much. ill get that done today sometime. you have a been a HUGE help.

Re: Project Ol' Blue
I will have to admit with all the flips I have helped with this is the one detail that I have never noticed. So with that said I too have learned something here.

got-er-did! took the rear end back out, drilled the holes and set her back 1". the drive shaft mounted up perfect! (thanks dragginmetal) dragonwrecker got the parking brake hooked back up and we bled the brakes out, then took her down the road. dang what a rough ride LOL need to get me a set of drop shocks and that's that. once i get them on i may have a clearance issue with my brake lines where they attach to the pumpkin. (didnt have that issue before i learned the rear end was too far forward hehe) have to see when i get the new shocks on. and another good thing.....my son actually came out and worked on it with me some. which he BETTER since this truck will be passed down to him one day. GOOD TIMES!
NOTE: in the second pic you can see im out there working with my cast shoe on for my broke toe. yeah i know....im dedicated to my build :smoke: |

Re: Project Ol' Blue
You can cut 1 full coil off. Thats good for around 2". Any more and you might run into your coils being to short. I've read and allways been told, if you get them to short they can come out while driving. Never seen this tho. The common way is spindles with drop coils or spindles with 1 coil cut off stock coils. This set up is good for around 4" of drop. You will need drop shock when you go more than 2" in the front. You can do a search on this site for cut coils. There's a ton of info on it and a lot of debates over whether or not you should cut a coil or buy drop coils.

Re: Project Ol' Blue
He has drop could on the front now but they still may not be quite enough
