Thanks everyone for the kind words.

Finished rounding the cab where I rounded the door. Also managed to get a good amount of the hood done today. I’m really happy how it’s coming out!

Few more pictures of the hood. It took 26 vertical cuts to maintain the shape up front. Last 2 pictures are before and after. I’m liking it:metal:

Re: My 56 build

Thinking about doing that when I get there. Started at rear bumper and working forward finishing everything as I go ready for paint kinda finish. My hood is a gmc so it has that hole for the emblem. By the time I get there my skills should be up to the task. How much did you cut out, just curious.

Re: My 56 build

I started with 1” but after reshaping the front to realign I was probably at 1 3/8”. I used 1” masking tape to lay it out.

thanks for the link dsraven,

it looks cool 'pancaked', but that is a lot of work, for a very subtle difference

another great metal fabricator on this site.....

Re: My 56 build

looks cool for sure. lots of work, for sure. BUT, if you're a little short in the undercarriage, like me, then a pancaked hood is an asset. lol.
not sure if I will do mine or not. it has that big hole in the front for the emblem.
ah, whatever. it's a challenge for my sheet metal skills. you can always get another hood if you don't like it. sell the pancaked one. break even, gain experience.

Funny you mention that, Bam and kim’s trucks have been much of my inspiration!

Mine is rusted here as well. I assume from battery acid fumes. Fortunately I had a complete other hood I could not sell and this area was good. So now I have a patch panel.

Never thought of that being the reason... but makes sense!

Thanks everyone for the kind words. As far as my fab skills I’ve just been willing to try anything! I worked as a mechanic for 2 years full time before going to college to get my degree. That was 15 years ago. I’m a pharmacist... go figure hey! I always wanted to play with cars and learned how from a lot of great mechanics. As far as body work... I’ve painted about 10 cars. Never had a welder to do any sheet metal work. So the metal fab is a new experience that I really enjoy!

Spent some time today working on the hood bracing and the rust repair. The first picture is the cross bracing with the pieces of the front brace being mocked up. Second is the front brace completed and painted with por-15. Brace took longer than I thought it would! Nearly everything I do on the truck does:lol:

Thanks mark! I’m sure you’ll get recognize my gas cap. I saw that you used the same one. I’m going to mount it in the fender. Got the idea at our local car show.

Also got my fuel tank. My project this weekend! It’s from tanks inc. it’s there universal 15 gallon tank. Also got one of there fuel pump assemblies. No fuel float as I don’t have my gauge n don’t know what ohm range I need yet.

Didn’t get to the tank this weekend. I decided I should probably install the rear roll pan first, so I ordered that. Im figuring I may have to move my rear cross member and the tank will mount to that. I did finish the hood bracing and stripped the underside.

Finished mounting the tank today. I built my own straps. Also started the filler tube. Had to notch the frame to make it work. So far so good!:metal: Now to finish filler tube and mount the cap in the fender

This build gets me excited for my apache build but I have to finish the 53 first. Cant wait to see this one finished Jason keep up the good work.

dsraven 05-06-2020 10:01 AM

Re: My 56 build

curious where on the fender you decided to mount the filler. too low will make you need a snickers at the gas station because it will take fuel really slow and burp back a lot.

It’s going to be neat the top of the fender. Close to where the cap is sitting in post 151. The pipe going through the box side is a 45.

Finished the filler tube and the gas cap. Cap turned out or good. I put it in the corner because the cap is convex and will blend in to the fender. Also mounted the roll over valve/breather. The last picture is looking up under the fender.

Also spent some time on the roll pan. Changing the sides to flow with the fenders. Still have to finish welding the right side and make the left. Stopped early today because my heater quit working. Was only in the 20’s today with 3 inches of snow. Hopefully I won’t need the heater again until fall... hopefully

sginphx 05-09-2020 05:26 PM

Re: My 56 build

Nice work! Love the flow of the roll pan and wish I had done the filler!

Thanks SG

Spent some more time on the roll pan. Thought I had it all set until I looked down on it. The side angles are different. This has left the pan with a twist. :dohh: Not sure how I’m going to fix it yet. I have a couple of ideas... time to sleep on it
