David, you are SO right about the gremlins! But the engine oil leaks seem to be fixed. It showed a little leak at the trans dipstick tube so I replaced the o’rings on the Lokar piece and that seems fixed too. I also figured out the right rear drum was way over adjusted (not sure how that happened) and killed the shoes, so I got the brakes torn down, cleaned and ready for for new shoes and hardware. I’m off tomorrow, so I’m hoping to get that resolved. What’s next GrEmLiNs!!!

I also cut half a coil off the front springs. Don’t know how it’s going to sit, but it’s a start.

Rear brakes have been replaced! I forget how much I hate doing drum brakes . I’m going to take it for another test drive on the next dry day.

Got it out for a quick drive. Leaks seem to be fixed, but the TV cable seems to still be out of adjustment so I didn’t drive it far. I do like the new ride height though.

Before & After

Great news on the oil leak.....I like the new ride height. How much did it change the ride?

nlped 06-12-2019 09:02 PM

Re: 1963 1/2 Ford Falcon aka Martha

The ride doesn’t seem to have changed at all

Well, I got all the little leaks solved and now the Broader Performance AOD took a dump! So, I’m hunting a 4r70w to put in that POS’s place.

Yeah guys, this gremlin business is getting out of hand. It’s costing me a small fortune to get this d@mn car squared away. :(

I finally rounded up a 4r70w. Having it freshened up with a mild shift kit, new 2600 stall convertor, and US Shift controller enroute too. Hopefully I will have this in by the end of the month.

A buddy sent me this and I had to share...

Freshly built 4r70w is in the shop. Waiting on the PTC convertor and the US Shift controller. Then I’ll start the swap. Hoping to have it ready for the Holley Ford Festival in Bowling Green the end of September

Sweet project, even if I am a little biased!

All the startup gremlins will drive a dude crazy. When I finished my 65 and got it on the road, I fought a faulty master cylinder, leaking head studs and coolant leaks at the rear of the intake as well. It's all good now, though.

Following along -

Dan

So, I’ve finally begun the trans swap. I just got it on the lift and drained the trans fluid tonight. But, I’m hoping to get some time every evening to get it out this week. Then I’ll, hopefully, get the 4r70 in this weekend. I still have to figure out how to get my Lokar shifter to work with the 4r70w, as the 4r70 ‘pulls’ vs my AOD which ‘pushes’.

I got as far as I could on Belushi, so I got back on Martha. I got the AOD out and got all The related fittings and such swapped to the new 4r70w. I’ve got a buddy coming over to help me do a trial fit. Problem is that the “bellhousing” on the 4r70w is BIGGER and the Falcon has a tiny tunnel.

nlped 09-13-2019 05:32 PM

Re: 1963 1/2 Ford Falcon aka Martha

No pictures but I did a test fit of the transmission. It went in easy, but it went south pretty quick. Bellhousing hits the floorpan before the rear of the transmission was in place. Then I figured out that the trans crossmember was now to far forward and my cool a$$ aluminum driveshaft is to long too. Geezus, modifying a custom car crap always has issues.

I modified the floorpan (read BFH) and I built offset brackets to move the transmission crossmember back 1”. I’ll have to take the driveshaft to a pro to have it shortened and rebalanced.

 I totally know this, but for some reason, I’m still always surprised when things go sideways.

I did another test fit to confirm my BFH work on the trans tunnel and my new offset crossmember mounts are going to work. Looks like they’ll both pass muster. Now just gotta get the driveshaft shortened and throw it all back together.

I got the PTC torque converter and the correct Lokar shift shaft ordered today. I’m gunning to have this one ‘done’ by the end of the month.
