Doesn't look much different but a few things have been done. It sat in the garage for a lonnnng time but the ol’ truck finally got some work done on it.

Truck looks great! Are you enjoying driving it?

Re: Project O.G. - My First Ever Build
Looks good. Maybe I will see you out driving it around town.
My blue 68 GMC has been driving around Katy everyday for more than 3 years. My son and i did most of the same upgrades to it (PS, PB, AC etc) and now just get to enjoy it. |
Re: Project O.G. - My First Ever Build
Looks great! Love the stock looking wheels.

Re: Project O.G. - My First Ever Build
Hey, that's awesome. Was hoping you'd go with steel wheels!

Re: Project O.G. - My First Ever Build
Thanks guys.
I've been enjoying driving it around a bit. Still have some things to get figured out. Horn doesn't work, put a new (in cab) gas tank and sending unit in and the cab smells like gas. Wonder if I should have just had the original tank hot tanked and sealed. Also, needs a bit of exhaust work. Hey Leevon, yeah, I finally decided on a direction for the truck. Originally I was planning a 4" & 6" drop and maybe some classic mags like slots or daisies. As time went by I started to notice that stock looking trucks are becoming much rarer than modded ones and I really just started to enjoy seeing those stock trucks. So, I decided to go with a stock look. I would have liked to keep it six lug but I had already purchased 5 lug conversion axles for the rear and it was nearly impossible to find a set of 15x6 6-lug steelies that would clear disc brakes. I have 3 sets of caps, white dog dish, stainless dog dish and full wheel covers, but I haven't tried any of them yet. Also, if I had it to do over again, I would have painted the wheels instead of having them powder coated. |

Thanks! Denver.

Re: Project O.G. - My First Ever Build
Cool, do you ever go to Golden cruise? I haven’t been for a while but there’s usually some good stuff there.

Re: Project O.G. - My First Ever Build
Nope I haven't been. Maybe I'll have to check it out.

Re: Project O.G. - My First Ever Build
Hey Chris—I love your build! Probably not hard to guess why I do. I agree it’s harder and harder to find a factory-looking pickup and these will always draw a crowd of people who aren’t necessarily car/truck people, but they enjoy remembering “the one Dad had.” I enjoy hearing about those pickups…up to a point. :)
Where in TX did you move from and then to? I’m dying to know what dealer your bumper is from! |
Re: Project O.G. - My First Ever Build
Thanks Ben! Yours is certainly one to aspire to. I really like rolling around in a "time capsule" so to speak and I get my fair share of thumbs up and comment's like, "what year is it?", or "my dad ...". Although, I actually thought they would be more common from the way the guys on the forum talk. Lol.
Speaking of the bumper, I believe we have the same one. Mine is also from D&D Bumper Works Seguin. The dealership is Carlisle Chevrolet in Waxahachie. Evidently it was the oldest Chevy dealership in Texas and was was still operating as Carlisle up until sometime in the last couple years (the wife and I drove past it, while it was still Carlisle, on one of our trips back to TX from CO). It's now called Legacy Chevrolet. Unfortunately the bumper isn't original to my truck. I was given what the owner believed to be the original bumper when I purchased the truck. It is a white step "safety" bumper from Cline Industries in Oklahoma which makes sense since my truck was originally purchased in Paris, TX. It doesn't have a dealership name stamped into it and I don't prefer the shape of it. Maybe one day I'll restore it and use it instead but I really wanted a dealer stamped bumper like the ones I grew up seeing in the 70's and 80's in TX. By the way, what silver paint did you use on you rear bumper? Mine is faded black with what appears to be a reddish primer underneath. All the ones I saw as a kid were silver. We moved back to the same city, Tomball, that we lived in prior to our move to Denver. |
Re: Project O.G. - My First Ever Build
Dealer bumpers definitely give these pickups some extra character. Folks in Iowa have never seen them so I get a lot of questions about mine. I thought about making a habit of collecting them, but that would require more space than I want to dedicate to it. Yes, yours looks like the same bumper as mine. In my memory they were almost all painted silver in a modest-looking finish like a spray can would deliver. Looked like the same stuff you saw on above-ground fuel tanks, pipe gates, etc. My body shop’s go-to silver is GM Switchblade Silver, so that’s what I got. And he went base/clear, which I would have opted against if he had asked first. It looks very nice, definitely nicer than new.
I haven’t been to Tomball in awhile but I understand there are a few more ppl there now than when I moved away from Aggieland (2007). I have a goal to drive this ‘68 back to College Station at some point and I will ping you when I do. |
Re: Project O.G. - My First Ever Build
I mostly remember painted rear bumpers with stencil painted lettering on them, in Iowa and here in Oklahoma.
I am hoping to get my 67 LWB C10 on the road first. its Vermillion, pretty plain, came with a 283 and a glide, nothing else power, but does have factory AC. I'm going to stencil paint the dealer name of the small Eastern Iowa town Chevy dealer, from back then, and patina paint the name of my Dad's Skelly station on the doors. He just turned 93 April 18. I'd sure like to get this done while he is still around. He's in great health, I thenk God every day tat he's doing sooo well!!! |
