Very cool to see that it looks like you are on the right track to getting this properly addressed; good for you!!

You may be able to borrow this gauge from Autozone or Oriellys for free.

Line pressure test... run the hose through a hole in your firewall and check pressure while driving. I may do this myself. There is a chart floating around here somewhere to tell you what you should read. I'm still learning so if you already know this and it seems common sense, bare with me.

This link shows you pressures you should have. I would think that at 45 mph right before 4th is supposed to engage, you are suppose to have a min of 90-100 psi and a max of 190-230??? Again, im learning so do some reading....

Looking at the link to the cable you have: I've never seen a TV cable with the brass thing at the end.

There are 5 types of OE TV cables shown here
Attachment 1786904

They are of varying lengths but again none have the brass thing. I think you have a Th350 kickdown installed. Google search image shows this, with brass thing.
Attachment 1786907

Also I know you have the carb throttle corrector piece but do you have the cable bracket corrector?

This does have the brass thingy, and not the TH350 end.

Driving to work this morning, the trans didn’t shift into 4th. At one point, it felt ready to, so I gave the gas a quick whomp and into 4th it went. Went into 4th as it should after that. To me, that reinforces the sticky valve theory. Low pressure could also be the problem, I admit. I’ll try to find a port and see if I can borrow the gauge. Also, as stated before, it shifts better when cold, but won’t go into 4 until very warm.

Are you using Dextron 3?

Re: Calling all 700R4 Experts!

You started having trouble after a fluid change so im wondering if the viscosity of the ATF has anything to do with it? When its warm its thinner and works, when cold its thicker and doesnt. I wonder if this effects pressure. I would also be driving 30 mins and checking the level often. Almost sounds a quart low to me. But im just thinking out loud

You said this same thing back on post 53, so nothing has changed.....when you get the gauge what exactly are you looking for as far as pressure levels, can you list what you "should" see before you borrow a gauge.

Park =
Reverse =
Neutral =
Drive =
3rd =
2nd =
1st =

than list what you have after you get the gauge in each above mentioned gears....

I think the video in post #105 matches what a couple of links reference on pressure readings.

Re: Calling all 700R4 Experts!

If you stomped on it and it went into 4th, doesn't that sound like the cable being too loose at normal throttle and when stretched a tad (while stomping on it) the pressure goes up enough to shift?

the port is on the drivers side and is also a port to measure trans temp. If I do my pressure tests, I might as well put a temp sensor in it when im done and run a temp guage.

Nope, but I was pointing out where to hook up a temp gauge......

I agree. Cable is wrong and brackets are wrong. nothings going to work right until those are addressed.

Step 1: get correct cable and brackets.

Step 2: check pressure with gauge.

Step 3: drive and adjust TV cable tension as needed for shift point.

Step 4: stop talking about this.

LOL!!!!! I think the buttons on the dash are not aligned.... no wait, its the fluid, to thick of fluid...it works when its hot...gots to be the fluid...and its exactly a quart low.....

Re: Calling all 700R4 Experts!

Actually wait lol

Step 1: replace 700r4 with Th350.

Step 2: talk about why the kickdown cable is wrong.

Step 3: turn K5 into flintstone-style foot propelled truck.

Step 4: stop talking about this.

Re: Calling all 700R4 Experts!

I think the answer was in post #100, I copied and pasted this from post 100 below....
--------------------
"Wow. Well... for starters, the short piece of shroud that actuallu goes in to the transmission is bigger than the “correct” cable, meaning the hile is bigger and the cable won’t seal. "
=========================================================================
the hole is bigger and the cable wont seal.......I would love to see a pic of the cable bolted to the transmission......really sounds like a T350 cable bolted to the 700R4....not even sure it can be done, but .........

the T350 cable is smaller in diameter at the trans than a 700r4 TV cable is...thats why the "HOLE IS BIGGER AND THE CABLE WON"T SEAL "

DOES YOUR TRANS LEAK ?
LOL!!!!!!!!!
