Re: 20" Truck Rally Wheels

Good luck with the 20 inch rally build. I work for a wheel company. The one that made the original 15 inch drop center rally. A run of 4000 wheels is done in one shift. All the tooling to get a wheel into production cost big money, six figures. We make 30,000 plus wheels per day for the oem at a cost of $20 to $35 per wheel. So yeah the wheels are cheap to make but the initial cost is huge. Best of luck, Steve

K guys, here's a second rendition - much closer to the factory dimensions/aspect ratio. Let me know what you all think! There's always room for improvement!

-The first one is a 20 next to a 15 - as you can see, I kept the aspect ratio as close as I possibly could.

-The next two is 20x10 (5.5" BS) and 20x8 (5.25" BS) side by side.

-the final one is a real wheel for reference.

Any input is appreciated!

I think trim is a must...that would be like going to the strip club with no money. That's no fun!!!

I am in negotiations with a couple wheel mfg. to build these. It will still be a while but the thought fo them being available soon is amazing! What are your guys thoughts on the backspacing. I decided on 20x8 with 5.25 and 20x10 with 5.50 because it seemed like what most everyone was using. It just doesnt leave much lip on the 20x8. Need opinions please!

How flexible will the manufacturer be on the BS? I would be in for a set of 20 x 10s with a 5 " BS and a set of 20 x 8 s with 4.75 BS.

I dont see where different B.S. would be an issue. It would just require a wait time so they could make them. I will know more about that as we move closer in the next few weeks.

A set of these would defnitely finish the look I have been working for on the Superburb.......:D.

Those backspacings are perfect.

For 71-72 and 73-87?

Re: 20" Truck Rally Wheels

Definitely for 71-72 lowered. 73-87 and 67-70 guys will require different specs. I don't think you'll find one backspacing measurement that will cover everyone's needs. I would do: 20x8 in 4.75 and 5.25, 20x10 in 5 and 5.5. Luckily, the wheels will be so cool that people will make them work, no matter...

The more I look at these, the more I really like them! I agree that the rings are a must as well. Are those as well as the center caps being made new as well?

I'd think being steel and 2 piece backspacing changes would be cake

They will accept the factory center caps - but including a set of new center caps and beauty rings in the purchase of the set would be awesome! I'm trying to figure out if i can make the centers big enough for the 6 lug pattern and still keep the same profile wihtout looking silly. The cap diameters are just over half inch bigger for the 6-lug. Would be nice to have the option though! (thoughts?)

The rings would be stainless steel - just like the originals. I like the idea gringoloco had about offering two BS off the get-go. Another idea would be "made to order" - means longer wait times, but you specify exactly what you want.

1972SuperCheyenne, thanks for the compliment! I'll get those drawings to you soon - still tweaking.

Re: 20" Truck Rally Wheels

I know for the 73-87 trucks that backspacing number is fine. 4.75-5.25 on an 8" wheel will be fine. 1/2" isnt going to ruin anything, We have alot of room on these trucks its not like any of these guys are trying to fit the widest possible tires all around anyways.

Re: 20" Truck Rally Wheels

I have used the same 20x8 with 5.25 and 20x10 with 5.50 on my 72 and my 86. Both seemed fine to me with no rubbing issues. B.S. changes should be simple, dont know if different costs will be involved in mfg. or not, like I said, I'll get into that when I get there. Wheels will come with 20" stainless rings. You can re-use your originals if need be. I am trying to set up a deal with some one to get caps in bulk but havent got there yet.

I am fine with made to order, but, there is a wait time for that and if there any other incured costs, thats up to the buyer. I am trying to keep these low priced.

Kyle, the work has been awesome so far from you. I appreciate it. Lets keep the reimbursement a secret for now though! ;)

Re: 20" Truck Rally Wheels

Great Idea and concept. I would really really spend a lot on time on your market for these. It is going to cost a lot of money to set up and tool for these in steel. You will have to sell a loooooooot of sets to come out ahead. Once several people have them it won't be quit as cool to get them because someone else has them. Once a bunch of people in a small group get them its even less desireable. You are in a very niche market so your customer supply is very limited.

IMO the only way to make money is going to be 1 set at a time billet at the 600.00-700.00 each its going to take to make and sell them.

I dont agree at all. Lots of people like the same style of wheels. Look how many Torque Thrust style wheel variants are out there. I bet AR has sold 100,000 TT2 wheel sets and they're still sweet! I have been talking to a few mfg.'s and know around what it will cost to tool and build. If I cant sell enough, I wont build them. But anyone who is going to spend $700 each for wheels isnt going to buy these anyway, they'll be buying Billet Specialties or something. These are not going to be built in Billet. I think that would take away from the look of the rally wheel. A billet wheel would look dumb with a trim ring and a rally wheel center cap screwed to it. Just my opinion.

how many people out there have the 15" rally wheel version? (too many to even count). Are they still cool? (yep, definitely).

the best thing about these rally wheels is the timeless design, and their ability to look good on alot of chevy truck body styles. We would be dealing with the chevy truck market from 1967 to at least the early 2000's. I think it's feasible to manufacture a more modern version - but we will find out!!

Now, in order to make the wheel fit both the 5x5 and 6x6.5 bolt pattern, the inside diameter has to be big enough for the 6 lug center cap. I've attached pictures for reference... does it look goofy for the 5 lug cap being a little smaller in the bigger center? or is it even noticable?
