I wanted to be able to remove the shifter without removing the trans from the car. To accomplish this, I cut the hole big enough to get it out and built a removable cover. There are four nuts welded to the underside of the tunnel that ar used to attach the cover. The welded in nuts, along with short pan head bolts, makes for very little intrusion into the tunnel.
Since this style of transmission was in Mustangs for several years, I figured the best place to find a shifter seal would be in the Mustang world. And I just happened to be right. This one is for fox bodys and worked really well for my application. All I had to do was grind the lip of of it so that I could form it to fit my tunnel. |

With all of the fab work done, I pulled the engine and transmission back out of the car for final welding. Once the welding was finished, I sprayed some etching primer on all of it and seam sealed everything. Next up will be shooting the Lizard skin sound/heat insulation on the new tunnel and floor. Here's a few pictures as it sits now.

I got the wiring harness about 95% installed. I just a have a few terminations to make once the engine is sitting in the car. I finished my 3 knob Vintage Air controller piece that uses a modified stock Chevelle heat/air bracket. I modifed the original automatic console to work with the manual transmission. It sounds much simpler than it turned out being. I went through a couple different shift boots looking for something that fit the opening well, and looked like it could have been original. The winner ended up being for a 1970 Mopar B-body. The clock was also removed and the console was made to house the 2 3/4" tach. My goal for all of these little things was for them to blend in with the rest of the mostly stock appearance of the car.

After several months of waiting, my engine was finally wrapped up and tuned on the dyno. It's a 467c.i. bbc built by Mark Jones (aka Vortecpro) in Colorado Springs. Forged internals, ported heads, roller valvetrain, and a fairly mild 9.6:1 compression. With my Holley 770 Ultra Avenger carb, it made around 590hp and 600ft/lbs. With his 850 xp carb, it made around 605hp. Mark is well known in the Chevelle world for building big blocks that are easy to live with on the street, but make serious power. I'm excited to get it in the car and have some fun.
I mocked up the front accessories using brackets from Alan Grove Components. I'm really happy with the way they fit, and allow you to use off the parts store shelf accessories, and look relatively stock. Now I just need to take it all apart and paint the pieces. |

Checking runout on the flywheel, and dial indicating the bellhousing. The runout was basically nothing with less than .001. The bellhousing is just outside of tolerance at .007 out of center. I ordered some offset dowell pins that will take care of that.

Re: 1967 Chevelle
Very nice work! That 467 should be very, very fun! I put vintage air in my 71 Camaro and I have to say it was worth it. Now I need to get a few more kits to put in other rides. Where's that money tree again?

So the engine is in, and the car is running. I've put about 5 or 6 miles on it with open headers. It feels like it's going to be a lot of fun to drive. I have to take it to the muffler shop in a couple days for exhaust.
Several things left to do, but its getting closer. |
Re: 1967 Chevelle
Sure does look good..!!

Re: 1967 Chevelle
I'm on my second MJ motor in my 66 Chevelle SS First one grenaded and he replaced under warranty. This one now has some major issues not even 3 hours on the motor . Looks like the roller cam is toast having it redone locally. I'm sure he would redo the current motor under warranty but I cant wait a year to get it done and pay 300 frieght each way to fix it .
My thread on the start of the 496 . Now it sounds like a diesel running https://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...d.php?t=809609 |

As im sure you know, Mark comes VERY highly recommended by a ton of people on the team chevelle forum. But FWIW, I was less than impressed with the customer service aspect of his business. But, I put up with it because I had my heart set on one of his engines. Hopefully I have a positive experience. Time will tell. When you say grenaded, what went wrong? And, do you know what caused the problem with you roller cam? |

I guess I should finish this thread off with a few pictures of the finished product. I've put a couple thousand miles on the car now, and it's a blast. It turns out 600 hp and a manual trans is fun.

It wasnt the cam that went south it was the rocker poly locks they cracked and were backing off had three that were cracked. Cheap Chinese parts but Mark is sending me a complete new set of USA made Scorpion rockers but hes moving his shop to Texas so everything is on hold . Your Chevelle is coming out great |
Re: 1967 Chevelle
Man I hate that for you. I kind of hand picked all the parts I wanted to use on mine, and drop shipped them to him. I stuck with a couple of his recommendations like the Isky cam, and Scorpion rockers. So as long as he used the actual internals I sent, I shouldn't have any lower quality parts in mine. I hope it works out for you.
What part of Texas is he moving to? I know he was sure down on the state of Colorado when I picked mine up. |
Re: 1967 Chevelle
jmking9 I bet that thing is a blast to drive! Thanks for the tip on the shifter boot from the fox body. I'm going to order one and add it to my 71 Camaro this winter.
