Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?

OK, I know that I am LATE getting in this thread, but I have a 1971 GMC Sierra Grande also, mine is the LWB, cargo lamp, leaf springs, no wood grain on the dash, but it has the GMC custom logo on the glove box door, and mine is a big block with the 396 emblems on the fenders, and the 402 sticker on the inner front fender, A/C, PS, "Custom" above the door handles, wood bed floor, tilt steering, and a few other things that I am forgetting. All numbers matching and it has 86k original miles. Mine has bits and pieces of all of the ones talked about above.

i have never seen a GMC with fender engine badges... let alone 396 badges for a 402. Does it list sierra grande on the SPID, and does the VIN on the SPID match the one in the door jamb?

Yes it lists as Sierra Grande in the SPID and the VIN matches the door jamb. It is really weird, I havent seen many with the factory tach before but it has that too. I am thinking like you were, it may have been all about where it was built and who did it. In the glove box it says 396, on the badges are 396, and on the fender well its 402. I know that there is not much difference between the two (heads, and crank?) I will take more pics and post them when I get home. Rare truck or mis-matched stuff?

Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?

they were never badges 402, even when 'properly badged' they were advertised as a 400. But I've never heard of them being advertised as a 396 in a truck... only in performance cars. And considering the last 396 big block was made in 69, there shouldn't have been any badges left over.
So we know your truck was originaly a grande.... has it been redone at any point?

Well here are the VIN plate from the door jamb, the glovebox sticker, and a few misc others......and it also has a headliner. I cant be sure, but I know it has not been redone in the last 25 years or so

My 70 GMC Sierra Grande has both Z17- Sierra Grande Truck & Z84- Custom Sport Truck on the SPID label & the Build Sheet.

yes, I did read that. What I don't understand is this.
Is it only a Sierra Grande if it says Sierra Grande on the
SPID, or can it be one somehow stated otherwise ? Mine
has all the tagging, but doesn't state it on the SPID. States
Cheyenne Super Sport and things like that on a TCE142S VIN,
but doesn't say Sierra Grande. I am curious.

It comes down to the code, not the description. If it says Z84 it's a GMC Sierra/Chevy Cheyenne and YE9 was a Sierra Grande/Cheyenne Super (in '72). The late 69-71s were an option on top of the Custom or Super Custom trim level. That's why those trucks have both listed.

EDIT: I have learned that the Sierra and Sierra Grandes until late '71 were an option "on top" of the Custom and Super Custom trim level and not their own trim level. That is why you see fender badges that don't say Sierra or Sierra grande and glovebox doors that say Custom. You only got the bedside badge.

Here's one I bought a few weeks ago .. 70 GMC Sierra Grande, SWB 350 3OTT matching numbers engine. $2500 :metal:

Longhorn Man Is this one a Super Custom maybe?

Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?

Yes,it's a Super Custom. A Custom would have the cloth insert seat. A Super Custom is a Z84. It has a headliner, right? Man,what a great find! I am 10x jealous.

Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?

Option # 624 refers to " GOLD VINYL CUST TRIM". I assume this means this truck came with the off white-parchment color seat, beige column and steering wheel and the beige dash pad. Why did GM refer to this as "GOLD"?

special-K 03-25-2012 12:55 PM

Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?

Good question. Not exactly an accurate description. It's more like a creme or beige. It's more tan than parchment and not as tan as sandalwood.

Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?

Special-k. Yes it has the headliner, and cargo light. You sound pretty sure it's a Super (?)

Not sure on the Gold interior but you are correct.. its more of an off white / beige color.

Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?

Yes,it's a Super Custom, which is the 67-70 equivalent to a Chevy CST and you have the Sierra Grande option over that. The 69/70 Sierra Grandes were extra special in my book.

Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?

Does anyone know if a 71 2500 sierra grande came factory with only the lower woodgrain trim or could you get a 71 2500 sierra grande with the black lower trim?

Re: How rare is the GMC Sierra Grande?

cc69rat do you still own the black truck with the gold vinyl interior. I am thinking about doing my interior with this color. Would it possible to take some more photos of the interior for me. So what color was the headliner, carpet, steering wheel, and sunvisors. If you would post me some interior pictures to this thread or pm , please. You would be a gentleman and a scholar.

Crazy Deal! That would be at least twice that around here. Course all trucks bring a premium in TX. Congrats!
