Those Old 6's (from the 216 thru the 292) are some tough ole steel! Boy they were built to work no matter what you did with them! Nice job on the finds. A new cam and lifters & I bet that thing will run pretty good for a long time.

Well I got out there today and started painting on my engine to see what it's gonna look like, the Intake is aluminum color and exhaust manifold is Cast Iron color and the only Green I found that was maybe close was a diesel Alpine green. Here are some pixs just to get an Idea...

The Brackets and pulleys and fan are a semi Gloss black. Comments are always welcome.

Isn't it amazing how much better new paint makes everything look. Glad to see the Orange go away. I myself plan on using the same paint on my 350. Is this the Dupli Color brand. I also thought about using the cast iron color on the transmission. Is it Dupli Color as well?

Yes all the paint is rattle-can Dupli-color got it all at Napa store
the black is a low gloss, all of them are hi heat 500 degrees. The green is
Detroit Diesel Alpine Green. And yes a fresh coat of paint brightens up a lot...
I put atleast 3-4 coats let dry in between coats... I'm happy with the way it
turned out...

Well I pulled the engine today and took off the power steering pump and brackets to be cleaned and painted, Took off bell housing it was very crudy inside, Just a lot of cleaning and repainting small things now. Still need to find the passenger side engine perch, A gentlemen gave me a cross member for the 292 but the right side perch was missing.
I fell like I've been beat up pretty good, after I sit for a while then get up I'm all stiff and
Limping...feel like an old man... the batteries are dead in my digital camera or I'd posted
pictures.... maybe tomorrow after church...

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

Well got out there today and started back on the firewall and still needed to cut the steering shaft cuz with the power steering setup on 70 frame the shaft was too long so the PO unbolted the column from inside and pulled it back about 2" thus leaving less gut room and hose clamped it to the bracket you can see in the picture how much is was. I proly cut 2" off of shaft...
http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/...ps79958615.jpg
http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/...psd3f563ab.jpg
so I'm gonna weld up the shaft and sleeve it.
http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/...ps865948ba.jpg
Took off of the heater box to be painted and also sand the firewall everybit helps...

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

I also cut off the 3spd linkage setup from off the column outside for a cleaner look..

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

Randy--looking good! I put a tilt column and slid it all the way to the dash for more room. a little bit of paint sure does make things look good.

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

well I wanted to see what some paint would look like and had some Green left over from the engine. The truck is gonna be green of some type guess I need to make a decision. I think I might just leave the undercoating on there as it's a pain to get off, and seeing that it's stuck on there pretty good might be a good thang for extra protection.
http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2b824d46.jpg
http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7e3892e1.jpg
This green might look pretty good on the whole truck, It's the Detroit Diesel Alpine Green...

RANDY COX 06-16-2014 07:42 PM

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

She's green now.
http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1529dfd5.jpg
http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/...ps89beddda.jpg
Guess now I can bolt up the bell housing to the tranny and bolt up the clutch to the 292 and get ready to slip it into it's new home..The Green paint I used looks very close to the original color...which is the 503A Light Green.....

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

Randy,
That 292 is looking fantastic! Rebuild kits are on ebay for as low as $320...You can also get lifters there to I believe...I know Napa has a rebuild kit for these as well...Call them an see if they have lifters. I'm fully hotrodding mine...more cam, punched out pistons, more compression, bigger valves, lump ports ect....But if ya ever need some info bout them...give me a holler. :chevy:

Far as the frame and truck....Looking good! :metal:

RANDY COX 06-17-2014 04:13 PM

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

Thanks TJ I used to have an Inline 6 hotrodders book from Leo Santucci, there's a lot of good info in there to... The lump port looks easily enough.. I may have to build that other six for later.....

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build

Nice progress and I like the green. I left the old undercoating on both of my current builds. My logic tells me if its been there for 50years with no issue, why mess with it now. I also undercoated both of my firewalls, but not a coarse undercoating. Came out great!!

Your truck is looking great and coming along well. Keep up the amazing job that you are doing. Even if it is a little slow, it is all worth it in the end.
