Eh, a 6.0l is a little out of my price range, and to be honest, my mechanical comfort level. Primary factor is price.

Re: '77 3+3 C30 Dually - "The "Sled"
See, there's always another...sometimes two...
Got a line on two complete and running parts trucks. Both 3/4 ton Suburbans ('87 & '90). Both relatively local. Both with fuel injected big blocks. Both for under $1k. Trying to make something happen on the cheaper one tonight ('90). Down side is I'll still be on the lookout for a 4L80E, but the upside is I'll have a complete parts truck at my disposal to assist in successfully completing the TBI swap. Plus I can part it out when I'm done and likely recoup a big chunk of money. I was worried that buying an engine that's already been removed may result in a few missing parts here and there which adds to the nickle and dime effect. |
Re: '77 3+3 C30 Dually - "The "Sled"
its coming along nicely, good work.

Hey man, what did you do with the original bed and all the trim for it?

Re: '77 3+3 C30 Dually - "The "Sled"
Finally picked up the donor truck. That was a bit of an adventure. The guy didn't seem like the most motivated seller. Anyway, picked it up last night for $500 and drove it home. Needs some love. It's a '90 with a TBI 454 and TH400 trans. Timing is way out, needs plugs and wires and the fuel pressure regulator is likely bad. I'm going to mess with it today while the engine is still in the truck just to see if I can get it to run decent. I'm going to pull the engine out for a total rebuild anyway, but still.
http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...c/P1040433.jpg I noticed that it didn't have A.I.R. injection. What year did GM stop using that? Oh! Also picked up a set of Doug Thorley headers for $350 on Craigslist. Almost brand new. The guy said he had them on his truck for a month before he sold it. Those suckers retail for over $800 new! Pics to follow. |
Re: '77 3+3 C30 Dually - "The "Sled"

Re: '77 3+3 C30 Dually - "The "Sled"
Actually, I'm going to make a quick release for it so I can pin it to the top of my M101 trailer. That way when we go camping, I can put all the heavy stuff on the bottom and use the rack to hold stuff like bikes and whatnot.
For those who don't know, and M101 is a 3/4 ton military trailer. You can pick them up cheap and they work great for expedition-style off road trips. http://www.armyproperty.com/Equipmen...-Trailer-2.jpg ...But I'll sell you some pretty sweet 16" chrome modular wheels with 4 unmatched tires. |

Re: '77 3+3 C30 Dually - "The "Sled"
I was pretty busy with non-truck related things this weekend, but I did manage to get the underside of my cab, leaf spring pack and Dana 70 painted on Saturday. I didn't get any pics (not that it's anything real exciting), but here's a few shots of the Thorley's I scored.
I bought them before I realized my parts truck doesn't have A.I.R., so I'll have to plug the ports, but still... http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...ne/Headers.jpg http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...e/P1040469.jpg |
Re: '77 3+3 C30 Dually - "The "Sled"
Needed to get the garage cleaned up today, but I did manage to make some headway on the Sled. Moved the frame over some and slid the cab into the garage so I could start working on it.
Happiness is a clean garage. http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...c/P1040500.jpg |

Looks good! Keep it up. You are partly responsible for me trying to hunt down a good Square-bodied Crew Cab Dually.

Re: '77 3+3 C30 Dually - "The "Sled"
The old clip is gone. Sold it a few weeks ago.
But it’s funny you say that. The path I’m on now is completely different from where I started. I was just going to slam it and restore it back to original. Now I’m dropping in a TBI engine, updating the interior, swapping to a newer clip…Thought to myself, “damn, should have just started with an 87+ truck to begin with. Would have been money ahead.” Oh well, in too deep to turn back now. |
