Re: Barn raising

Got a little more done on the truck today, I am in the middle of fabricating a spoiler for the tailgate. My plan is to have a spray in bed liner and a roll up bed cover so the spoiler should transition nicely. Sorry I don't have great pics because it has been raining in So Cal this weekend. to finish it I will have it powder coated satin black.

When I read spoiler, I thought, please no big wing. This should look alright though.

Re: Barn raising

very cool idea. how are you going to paint it to match?

Re: Barn raising

Ha Ha my wife said the same thing when I told her I was going to build a spoiler. This should be very modest and classy addition, Once the bed liner and roll top cover are installed it should look even better. I figure if I am going to have a NASCAR inspired shop truck it would need a spoiler.
I finished welding the end caps on but the rain got too bad to pull it out and take a picture. I will be bolting it on with four S.S. button head screws. Two inside and two outside.

The finish will be black satin powder coat.

Re: Barn raising

You could paint it black then go over it with a gray and use a heat gun to give it the aged effect . Or something like that

Re: Barn raising

Been pretty busy lately. but I did get the spoiler back from powder coat and promptly twisted off a S.S. button head sheet metal screw in the mounting hole. Had to take it off to see how I am going to extract the remnant w/o damaging the tailgate.

Also I prefit a F350 bench seat that I had bought last week. This seat is the same width on the bracket and only needs minimal mods to get it to fit our trucks. Going to have it re upholstered to match the original bench seat stitch pattern. I am going to change the color to black and the carpet also.

I always figured it would have racing buckets and huge belts that say simpson or something. And window nets...

I have one daughter and one wife, So I can take my whole family, including my two yellow labs in the bed, on a cruise if I have a bench. I thought about getting a modern split bench seat with all the adjustments that come with it but I really wanted to maintain the vintage look.

Your truck looks sweet! I've been pondering doing something like this with mine but I have to paint the whole thing first. Gonna try the "fake" patina on it since I just can't handle the mental stress of having a nice paint job:crazy:

Just my opinion, leave it long. Too nice of a truck to hack down.

Mike

I just found and read thru you whole build. The tire idea is really cool and I like your spoiler idea. Looks similar to something I was thinking of for my '98 before I sold it.

Is your 9" out of a Lincoln Mark V? The brakes look similar to mine. I was looking at how the caliper mounts to the bracket. It has been so long since mine was together I forgot how they go back together. Looks like I guessed right, I have the spring steel and retainer on the side end of the caliper as you do. The only difference is that my bracket puts the retainer to the top instead of the bottom. I will need to go check mine to see if I have the brackets flipped side to side. Do you know if they are marked as to what side they go on?

Re: Barn raising

Mine is a 77 Mark V, the brackets for the e brake are from an 80's Mark VII. The bracket geometry is reversed so that the cable can pull in the direction I wanted. The brackets are not interchangeable left to right so you cannot get them backwards because they do not fit on the wrong caliper as well as they fit on the correct one.

Re: Barn raising

Finally got around to snapping some photos of the finished spoiler. I finished it with a S.S. molding so it matches the rest of the trim but also protects the edge from getting dinged.

I also found a '95 F350 seat that fits in our trucks with some minor reshaping of the front bracket. Had it recovered and made sure it was stitched in the 60's style white thread with parallel seams. I loved the old seat and there was only minor tears in the vinyl but being a low back the rear window is the first thing my head would hit in a crash. My wife convinced me that the turquoise is a better color for the vinyl rather than black.

I'm running a mid 90's ford seat in my step also, I was quite suprised how well it fit. and its alot more comfy than the origanal bench. I like the spoiler idea, it looks sharp. Did you think about putting some peices molded into the rear bed corners kinda like a 3 piece spoiler. just a thought.

Re: Barn raising

Thought about it but I wanted to keep it simple and not drill into the fleetsides.
On my seat I did notice that the Fords have an arm rest on the door that runs the entire length of the door and the back of the bench is narrower than the original Chevy but the bottom is just about the same. I had the upholstery guy add 2" of foam on each side to fill in the gap worked out great.

Very nice! Glad to see it turner out well! I like the matching vinyl. Goes good with the truck.

Re: Barn raising

Looking good. My seat is a 60/40 split vinyl bench from a early 90's suburban. I'll have to get it recovered in turquoise also. Did the seat match the original door panels and arm rests good? If so, could you get me the specs on the seat cover material?

I still need to find some arm rests in that color. Been looking for a year or 2 and haven't had any luck yet.
