Re: My Build - 1955 2nd Series Short Bed Stepside
thanks! im very excited about it, its going to save me MONTHS of work/energy - being a novice painter only having to paint half of the truck seems alot more doable to me hah.
Hey Kabwe, do you have a photo of one of your doors window frame? My Big-window cab has the stainless holes but my doors were from a cheap model truck (not even a pass. mirror heh) and I was looking for a visual to help me template the holes on my doors... BTW, when are you gonna stop helping the world and be a little selfish and get moving on your own project? |

Re: My Build - 1955 2nd Series Short Bed Stepside
good find on the bed :D
fleetside guys want stepsides, stepside guys want fleetsides; i guess the grass is always greener... since the bed is painted white, will that be the color of your truck? |
Re: My Build - 1955 2nd Series Short Bed Stepside
Very nice find on the bed.

Nice find on the bed. You must be living right, first you found a very nice BBW cab and now this perfect, already painted bed, LOL
There's a pic of a door with the holes for the trim in this thread. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=533137 |
Re: My Build - 1955 2nd Series Short Bed Stepside
Thanks for the link russel, ill need that photo to get my trim all in
as for the parts... the bed was pure luck that the guy had a great bed and just wanted something different. the fenders, sides. tailgate, lower cross brace under tailgate and front panel are all new repop parts, the steps are old but in good shape - but in most cases out here (northern cali) you can find some good rust-free parts as long as you stay away from the coast. unfortunately this bed was right on the cost so little surface rust is coming in on the tailgate and such even though they were all new parts, but now that its inland I can keep it protected. patience is a virtue haha funny story though, i wasnt even looking for a bed. My bed was so messed up i was going to weld in a S10 floor and rhino-line the whole thing to hide the dings, in searching for an S10 bed for a good floor to cut out I found this bed.... sometimes life works in funny ways, someone or something must have been telling me not to cut up an S10 bed, and that my truck needed a wood floor... |
Re: My Build - 1955 2nd Series Short Bed Stepside
didnt make any progress on they truck this week, on my journey to get the bed my new-to-me toy-hauler had a check engine light.
after much debate as to what to do (and some suggestions on the 88-98 section) I just did a simple tune-up and solved my problems! Now that its running well again i can focus more on my truck... here is my new tow rig - 2000 Z71 Tahoe BONE STOCK - just like im keepin' it! http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...i/Tahoe002.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...i/Tahoe004.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...i/Tahoe006.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...i/Tahoe003.jpg |
Re: My Build - 1955 2nd Series Short Bed Stepside
No progress in a while, FINALLY drilled the holes for the heater box, the blower will be next
now i have to find that thread where someone shows the length of the spacers for the heater box-firewall gapping... http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...12Truck001.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...12Truck003.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...12Truck002.jpg |

Re: My Build - 1955 2nd Series Short Bed Stepside
thanks Spousta and Nice GMC! I really like the way the radio looks and it puts out a decent sound as well for having weak little speakers
Had some time today so i drilled the blower holes and threw some spacers on the heater/blower and bolted it up. In case anyone cares, a few months ago Daze57 told me his heater spacers were as follows "the 3 on the blower motor itself (3 studs are all 5/8 inch spacers. on the other part - the core side box has 3 studs also . the 2 shorter studs are 5/8 in. and the longer stud is 7/8 in" Stacked some washers and went on my way. FINALLY got this heater bolted up was sitting in my shed for about 4 months lol.... http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps3579556b.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps95f08066.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps1f1441bb.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psa70b174e.jpg I know that the main difference between the standard and deluxe heater is the fresh air intake but i doubt ill hook that up any time soon... |

Nice score on that bed, I actually found a fleet side that some one made into a trailer, picked it up for $50 and it has the original 1/2 ton rear end in it..bonus..

Re: My Build - 1955 2nd Series Short Bed Stepside
Well its been a while since i have posted in my build thread, and not much has happened since the last post. Caught up in several other projects around the house and will be getting to the bodywork of my cab and front end soon, but wanted to throw up a few pics of my new purchase...
Sometimes the time to buy something is when you need it, but for harder to find items, the time to buy them is WHEN YOU SEE THEM. that being said, when I was looking for bed parts I really wanted to find a short fleet bed, but we all know how hard they are to come across... I ended up finding a mint aftermarket shortbed stepside bed all new and painted for a decent price, so I bought it last year... well I wasnt really LOOKING for a bed today, but as soon as I saw it I had to buy it. Now i just have to figure out wether I am building another truck or whether I am swapping my stepside out... For some reason I think I might end up with a Pair of Task Forces :) Here is the Shortbed Stepside bed I found. No tailgate, rotted bed but very decent sides. main dent in "bullet" was slide hammered and bondo'd 20+ years ago and is in decent shape, the tops of the fender flares were swapped at one point, but not the full arches, and there is a dent on top of the front of one bed side, but EASY to get to. Not banged up and NOT rusted away. I couldnt be happier to own this bed. The best things come up when I am not looking for them, but sometimes just because im not looking for it, doesnt mean im not going to buy it! The only thing ill add is it is pre-drilled for the deluxe trim and I WISH it was still there! but the Previous owner also said he also wished it was there because he knew it was worth $$$$$ http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps99ddcc0b.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps1744fd41.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps7fc6945e.jpg |
Re: My Build - 1955 2nd Series Short Bed Stepside
Wow nice find, that one is in better shape the one I got, those bullets can be a bear to straighten out. To bad on the trim but good find anyway.

it's only money! spend it so i don't feel so bad for how much i've spent!
lol Nice looking bed and a great find even at $300 Ray |
Re: My Build - 1955 2nd Series Short Bed Stepside
Okay, well after thinking long and hard I just couldnt see myself building a whole other 55-59 project, as they are both time consuming and expensive to put together, heck im 12+ years into mine and its not done. So I had 2 choices, put the fleet on my truck and off my nice step, or just get another truck to satisfy my need for a short fleet, and move this bed on. As luck were to have it, i chose the ladder.
Made a small profit on the bed, moved it on to a good new home where it will be making a happy 1955 pickup a nice fleet conversion. What did i get to satisfy my short fleet itch?? well some of you guys will frown, others wont... but I found a Ford F100 that was just too good to pass up... (for a price ill never get a chevy for!!!!) runs, drives, NO rust. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps240daffa.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps9b847f60.jpg Anyways, back to the chevy. I finally took a photo of the truck with the new bed on it. With this bed, i just couldnt justify dumping this bed for the fleet... I also like the small touch of having the rear bed rail holes filled. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps77024df0.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psfca0a831.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psea7d2b15.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps968ac611.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...pse6d767ac.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps6d72059b.jpg |

Re: My Build - 1955 2nd Series Short Bed Stepside
Hey guys, I haven't found motivation lately to do the required body work on the '55, so I did the only logical thing, bought another project.
This time i stayed in the chevy family with a 1972 K5 Blazer. Its got the typical rust in the front floor, the A pillar has some damage, some rust in the cowl but the majority of the body is in excellent shape. All original body panels and all original paint. Single wall top with some damage, a donor hatch has been used and its in horrible shape but at least its there. Here are some photos. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps2ad5c57f.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps32e6e0b8.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psb9e71192.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...pse013103b.jpg |
Re: My Build - 1955 2nd Series Short Bed Stepside
gotta hand it to you, I never heard of anybody off and onning it like you are for so long, and actually make any progress.

I would have made more progress but the rear main puking oil made me pretty discouraged. I went through a summer-long debate as to whether or not I should just replace the motor with a 5.3 or similar, along with the rear main seal the left bank is burning oil and I don't know if I want to dump a ton of money into it. Either way I will get to the 55's body work soon, but the wife is in full support of the K5 so its going to get some attention until its cleaned up a little. |
Re: My Build - 1955 2nd Series Short Bed Stepside
Any updates? Hope you stuck with the poncho motor...

Re: My Build - 1955 2nd Series Short Bed Stepside
Sadly still no updates, haven't really made any progress in like 2 years. Detracted with all of my other projects. I keep the battery tended and start it up and run it to warm about once a month. thats about all the love she is gettin these days sadly, hopefully I will find time to get moving on it soon, or just suck it up and drive it while leaking the oil and just keep it topped off. I have revamped that little f100 I bought, and I have also been putting some cash into my blazer, as well as a 28' Model A Tudor hotrod with chevy drivetrain. As soon as I regain motivation i will be back with more!
