WELCOME JOHNNY ! you'll find this to be a fun , helpful group .

Being in El Monte you're right in the thick of cheap used parts , lots of good Self Service Junkyards all around you .

DO make one of the meet & greets ! they're terrific , some guys will show up with under construction rigs , others with amazing show rigs , some with tatty old beaters that still earn their living as Work Rigs (ahem) .

The really cool part is the sharing of knowledge , there's always a cool new thing to learn and they're helpful to look at your rig and offer suggestions if you ask .

Wait ~ more detail please ~

You were driving along with the oil pressure light leering redly at you or the gauge on zero then a connecting rod began to bang loudly before it broke ? .

These oil pumps rarely fail , depending on the details of what happened will help greatly .

FWIW , Melling's current Q.C. leaves much to be desired , I've seen many right out of the new box that were worse than the old pump .

It's a very rare thing for me to need a new oil pump .

It's raining again so I guess I'll have to drive my truck in it to - day , rust holes and all ~ I dislike the water dripping onto my feet .

Driving to work started to smell something (kinda burning oil) smell. Looked at my oil gauge and it was at zero. Very loud clanking and BOOM!! This all happened in a few seconds . Had enough time to get over to the shoulder and put it in nuetral and coast off the fwy. Then push it 2 blocks to get it off the major street I was on. So I assume it's my pump ,don't know what else could be the blame. It was a cl motor I picked up cheap so I knew it was a gamble to start with

I was at Pomona yesterday and stopped to talk to the guys from Classic Industries. I asked if they were going to have an open house this year. They said they were talking about inviting individual car clubs for an event at their shop. I said "C/10 club, C/10 club"! The guy I was talking to is the sales manager Brian, he may come to the So. Cal. Part of the board to check interest.

Re : V-8 Oiling Woes

O.K. ;

It's been a while since I did and SBC works but I remember there was a plastic clip connecting the oil pump to the distributor drive that often failed , allowing the oil pump to stop wile the dist. kept turning so unless you noticed the light/gauge , you simply drove the engine to death .

Also , used engines often have sludge clogged oil pickup screens , this is why I always flip 'em and yank the oil pan for cleaning and a looksee , then re seal the nearly always leaking rear main and timing cover seals .

Bummer you lo$t out but , there's plenty of good ones out there , keep working at it .

Luckily , The Chevrolet Division knew they were building the Common Man's cars so they designed the SBC V-8's & L6's to be simple and robust , easy to fix even if you're unskilled and only have minimal tools ~ remember those basic facts and you'll never go wrong with a Chevy . part of why for many years it's been the most popular car in the world :chevy: .

FWIW ; 283's are not slow / underpowered when it proper tune ! maybe not tire shredding burnout beasts but what use is a truck you don't want to or cannot afford to drive daily ? .

Hell , I even like the original 265 CID V-8 but then , I tend to work my stuff really hard and don't accept less than 150,000 miles as normal service life so to me , build it right (low compression , balance everything) then you can hammer it like a red haired step child while the other guys are fixing theirs yet again .

I still have my 283 sitting up I only changed it because it started running bad and from what I was told it was the cam. Changed that, but broke a stud on the heads. Instead of changing the stud, got a price on rebuilding the heads, 450 was too high so I found an enging cheaper.

My problem was lose head bolts after all that. It was in my truck for over 12 years without a hitch. Just depends on what you want.

Older V-8's should always have some value for the restorer crowd .

Of for cheapskates like , um , you prolly know a tightwad or three =8-) .
