Re: 1969 C10 SWB Stepside - Big Block project
Yeah - the anticipation is killing me too. What's worse is Keith (n2billet) will see them before I do! There's too many trucks in his shop .. I just hope they make it out of there at some point.
Dad and I have worked quite a bit on my fenders and hood. I have searched the US over to find good GM metal .. so I'm hoping it comes out ok. The fenders seem really solid and we've managed to work 99.9% of the flaws out. The goal being zero bondo / filler anywhere in it. I feel like it will need small spots of glaze but nothing significant anywhere to speak of. I used the 'marker' technique on most of it. Came out really, really neat man. It's an easy way to block bare metal fenders without getting any sort of build on them. The marker just serves as a guide coat giving you dark spots and metal .. just like you're blocking primer. I want to bring the metal up completely flat then glaze if needed, Epoxy, PPG K38 for the first build pass to reduce shrinkage, K36 for the 320/400/500 stages and by that time it should be pretty slick. Hugger Orange is still haunting me guys .. We'll see. Next would be Blue, Red, Black, White or Silver. I'm so confused. It's slick enough to go black but my bodwork skills are probably not up to it. I hear it's bad to try black on your first ever paint job. |
Re: 1969 C10 SWB Stepside - Big Block project
You sound like me, I have changed my mind on paint colors so many times that everybody around me just laughs now when I bring it up. I have wrestled between Hugger orange, Omaha orange, blue, green, white, black, satin black etc. I have finally decided to paint it my favorite color which is Red. I figured if I am putting all this time and money into this frame off resto I might as was paint it my favorite color. Probably going to go with Viper Red, I want it to be bright.
No matter what color you go with your truck will look amazing. Posted via Mobile Device |

I am stuck between sapphire blue with a black interior, black with a red interior or medium gray metallic with a red interior. Most likely my stepside will end up sapphire blue with black since I have the paint materials and most of the interior parts to do it already. |
Re: 1969 C10 SWB Stepside - Big Block project
Dad picked up my block yesterday from the machine shop. It looks great. We have new Keith Black pistons for it and I am working on a new set of Eagle I-Beam rods. We mag'ed the rods and found some had hairline cracks .. so New bushed rods are going in it. It's coming back together!
I also talked to Keith today and I should have my wheels by Friday. I'll post up some pictures when they get here. |

Re: 1969 C10 SWB Stepside - Big Block project
Very cool truck!
Bummer about fresh BB, been there. Built a restoration motor for my 66 Corvette, cam went flat. Built it again and spun a rod bearing. Third time I let the machine shop build it and the new owner still loves it. :hh: Looking forward to more. I really like the custom center caps, might need a set to go with my rallies. |
