Re: Its the shortbed's turn "Project Junkyard Resurrection"

If I am chaninging my 3.07 (new axle) over to my 3.73 (old axle) should I change gears only or the entire inner carrier? My old axle is closed knuckle but both are dana44's. Just wondering which is better to do....thanks.

Re: Its the shortbed's turn "Project Junkyard Resurrection"

Any set out of a dana 44 will work open knuckle or closed.I would just change the whole thing if I was doing it.

what other seals should I change while I have it apart? I figured that you have done this since you are in the middle of two resto's....

Re: Its the shortbed's turn "Project Junkyard Resurrection"

you might as well change the axle seals put in new diff bearings and get a crush sleeve or two

Re: Its the shortbed's turn "Project Junkyard Resurrection"

I am putting in all new seals everywhere so I dont have to replace them once its done.I checked and replaced bearings as needed(they had been replaced before so only 2 bearings need replaced).I got new crush sleeves too.I cant confirm this but was told to replace the nut that holds the yoke on after you have removed it.I am replacing them too.I put new u joints in the axles and greased everything.I took it completely apart to insure what needed replaced would so I wont have any problems in the future.Cleaned all the parts in the parts cleaner I have too.

Re: Its the shortbed's turn "Project Junkyard Resurrection"

Spent the day taking the rear axle half apart.Cleaned it a little.Removed the old t case crossmember to put in the new one with the rare t case skidplate I got.Put in new u joints on the axle but I am going to take them back and get some better ones for it.

Well,I have some rust I over looked when I was blasting the frame. It is not rusted through but needs my attention. It is rusted around the front hangers of the rear springs.Im gonna remove the hangers and fix the rust in the next few days.Sounds like fun.Better start digging through the junk in the shop and find the welder  Here are pics of the empty axle housing and a crappy pic of the broken ring gear

what brand lift did you go with? website? thanks... I'm thinking about a 2.5" lift....

1969k10stepside 01-14-2007 11:52 PM

Re: Its the shortbed's turn "Project Junkyard Resurrection"

I bought the 4" lift from Rough Country. All new springs. Some dont like Rough Country but was very cheap compared to other companies.Around $625 for 4 springs,4 shocks, hardware, and bushings.I dont think they make a lift for 67-68s but Im not sure. Here is a link to their site.I bought my kit off ebay.If you are intersted in that link let me know.

Re: Its the shortbed's turn "Project Junkyard Resurrection"

Well,I got the rear axles out.The rear end looks good..lol.Im gonna change the seals and let it be done. The new lockouts should be here tomorrow so I will be waiting on a few parts and the front can go back together. As soon as I get the rebuilt tranny back(still havent yet) I plan on bolting it and the NP205 on the frame.Hopefully a motor will acompany it shortly as its about the only thing keeping the body off the frame.

Re: Its the shortbed's turn "Project Junkyard Resurrection"

Quit working on the truck tonight after I got all the rear end apart. Now just a housing to be cleaned.Nothing besides seals, wheel studs, and brakes need attention on the back, unlike the front.I got the new t case crossmember painted and bolted up.

Re: Its the shortbed's turn "Project Junkyard Resurrection"

Spent $100+ on bearings, seals, and other misc parts today.Heading to the jy tomorrow looking for any parts I could use,or not really use but hog for myself:lol:Maybe bringing home bucket seat out of a gen 2 blazer to use till I get the real buddy buckets.Hoping to find towhooks, tilts, tachs and other stuff but I will probably have to keep dreaming.

Nice project. Good score for $350.00. Are you doing the skyjacker softride spring lift? I have been saving for it myself.

1969k10stepside 01-16-2007 08:48 PM

Re: Its the shortbed's turn "Project Junkyard Resurrection"

Re: Its the shortbed's turn "Project Junkyard Resurrection"

Well,I overlooked some rust around a rear crossmember. It turned out to be a bad area, rusted through:whine:I have cut out the bad area, and with some scrap metal I can patch the frame, give it its strength back, and look like I never cut it.I am currently cutting the new piece to size and should have it welded in by the weekend,at the latest. Will have pics tomorrow.
