So, no progress here, but check this thread to watch us ruin a perfectly good Suburban using a full Ridetech and Accuair system :D

Sorry to hear about the camshaft man! But, it's now an excuse to upgrade. :D

Also like the Sub build. Nice!

Bummer to hear about the cam - If you stick another flat tappet in it I'd suggest getting a zinc additive from Summit or wherever and adding it to the oil at every change.
Modern oil is short on zinc content which causes these kinds of issues with flat tappet stuff.

Edit - another thing to do is avoid idling for extended periods. Low engine speeds reduce the rate of rotation of the lifters.

Re: How To: Ruin a Perfectly Good K/5

Not certain on the cam, haven't had a chance to dig in and investigate. I do know that it was getting ZERO oil to the rockers on both banks, but holding 60psi. I haven't been able to find anything that would cause this. It was making plenty of racket, too...

If it were only that easy--I just don't have time to fool with it. I ordered a GM crate for it today along with a new HEI. I'll slap on a rebuilt carb and call it good. Normally, this would be an opportunity for an upgrade, but I have other more pressing priorities.

I got a 'new' to me grill from a local member and stuck it in last night. No more gapped-tooth smile :D

Let me know what kind of break in oil and regular oil you decide to use.
I'm worried about the "zinc issues" with flat tappet cams.

Will do. Definitely will use some type of additive, if not a dedicated zinc rich oil. Still researching break-in lube.

Did you get the 260hp,290hp or 330 hp?

gringoloco 01-29-2013 06:57 PM

Re: How To: Ruin a Perfectly Good K/5

260. The 290 is the same motor with an old school grind cam for $400 more. If I need a cam, I'll choose my own. Didn't look at the 330. Figured this was better than a questionable local rebuild for $1200...

The 260hp is a great deal. the burb has one it and and I am not sure of the mileage but it runs well. I will replace it with the same when it dies.

I used Brad Penn break in oil for initial start up and the first 500 miles. Then switched over to the 10w30. No problems and its been about 5000 miles.

I used lucal oil break in along with Valvoline VR-1 racing oil because of it's high zinc content. Had no issues with my BBC when I fired it.

I read that the VR1 formula had changed--not as much zinc now?

Another awesome addition to the family Chris. Too bad about the engine. I wondered why you were selling all your LS gear now I see you are going to GB. You have a lot going on bro. Subscribed

Man, you are not kidding. Such is life...

Parts are starting to trickle in--got my HEI dizzy and wires today, crate motor should be here tomorrow, along with a bunch of gaskets, plugs, etc...

Is removing ignition points considered ruining?

I know there are some guys on the Chevelle and Corvette boards that would cringe. It won't be numbers matching anymore after this weekend. I figure it's just a Blazer and not a super low mileage example. I will try to maintain the original look, for now, but it's a slippery slope :exit:

Yep, its only original once! Keeping the outside appearance is nice, but youre right, that slope has many cool parts strewn along the way:smoke:

If you have the room, at least store the block
