Kevin, While a 67 GMC could have a 14 digit VIN, the 12 digit VIN on your 67 Chevrolet Suburban is correct and clearly so !

As was indicated it breaks down as,
K Conventional Cab 4x4
E V-8 engine (base 283 in your case)
1 10 Series 1/2 ton
6 Suburban
7 1967 model year
Z Fremont California assembly plant
156477 Unit serial number

Additional SPID coded information

Paint code 451 is Medium Blue Poly (metallic) code 506, applied as a two-tone with a code 526 Ivory roof.

Model number KE10916 confirms it to be a 4x4 V-8 1/2 ton Suburban with tailgate.

Curious as to what would the other 2 digits denote if there was a 14 digit serial number on a 1967 GMC?

Its not that simple,
In a nutshell the big differences are an added GVW range as a suffix, two digit wheelbase, two digit model and a four digit serial.

To see the differences clearly just go to the begining of this thread and compare the 67 GMC to the 12 digit 67-71 Chevrolets. In 72 Chevrolets used a 13 digit VIN with an added maunfacturer digit.

Can anybody help me to decode this vin?

1C154L113981

its on a 60 Apache, here in Germany.
What I found:

1 = 1961
C = 2WD
15 = 1/2 ton
4 = Pickup
L = (found Los Angeles but not for this year)#
113981 = ser. number 3981, but that be?
Could this be real?

thank you for your help.
Joerg.

Joerg, I also have L=Los Angles in 1959. But I can't find L in 1960 or 61. sorry, I'll keep looking.

Thank you for the information.
I have a title which shows built in 1960 but the vin says 1961.
Can you explain how this works?

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

Jogre, that's pretty common. 1961s were built from August 1960 to July 1961. So a early 61 build is often titled as a 1960. Or if a late build sat on the lot till 1962, and then sold it could get titled as a 1962.

Another question. How can I identify the colour, engine and tranny of this old one?

Joerg, Start a thread in the 60-66 section. Here's a link.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/forumdisplay.php?f=6

The guys in that section can answer your questions better than me. Also ask them about your L= Los Angeles assembly plant code. And don't forget to include a pic of your truck. They love pics.

I made the discovery today that my '72 burb has two different VINs. One on the glove box, one on the door jamb. I imagine this happens from time to time as these old vehicles use parts from donors to be restored?

I guess my question is which is more accurate? Any opinions?

VIN =
glovebox: CKE162F145864
door: CKE262F143439

C = Chevy
K = 4WD
E = V-8
1 = 1/2 ton | 2 = 3/4 ton
6 = Suburban
2 = 1972
F = Built in Flint Michigan
145864 | 143439 serial number

Hell of a SPID,

6 LUG OR 8 LUG?

Door jamb is probably correct

Have you verified the rear axle has a locker in it? or front?

I really want to believe that the person typing up the VIN on the SPID was just extremely hungover and screwed up, but there are too many numbers off.

Shame really because that's a highly optioned truck.

I hope its just a mistake.

6 lug. The front wheels have locking hubs. I guess I don't know how to tell if the rear differential is a locker.

Glove box door may be correct then, 1/2 ton.

Post more pics, looks to be a nice truck.

Look for the VIN on the frame. Driver side rail up by power steering pump. There may be one under the cab as well but thats hard to see.

Getting ready to buy a 1972 GMC Sierra Grande, the vin is
CE234-S132178

Reading the decoders the 4 in CE234 should indicate Model year.....this is a 1972?

No, that VIN indicates a 70-71 GMC 3/4 ton fleetside 2WD V8 truck.

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

Bruce this is a great resource I've relied upon many times. Thank you.

I'd like to add that Blazer VINs for the 1969 model year begin with "B". Here's a link to an example on the K5 SPID thread (where several others are documented): http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...&postcount=370

EDIT: Is there a chance you know the assembly month for a 1971 model year Blazer assembled in Flint with a sequence number of 654572? Prior to 71 all K5's were assembled in St Louis and I'm curious in what month Flint began K5 assembly. As I don't see many 71 Flint K5s I suspect is was later in the model year.

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

Deadhead, thank you for the props. We're glad you are finding the decoders useful and very pleased at the number of people that have found the resource useful.

We knew about the Blazer VINs when we put the decoders together but left it off to save space. It was just the one year and only on Blazer models, so we figured not enough affected to include it. We kept to the essentials so that the characters and boxes could be as big and readable as possible. We also left out things like the starting sequence number of 800001 for the 1969 model year and 600001 for the 1971 model year. But your absolutely right, First year Blazers had a B for Blazer as the first Character of the VIN.

As far as your 654572 Blazer build date. Lucky it's a 1971. I can only do this for 1971. Any other year and we would have to do it the hard way. Checking blue door stickers, Engine date codes etc. against the VIN number in a made/collected database. But for 1971 I have some documentation from GM that helps a lot. Your Flint Blazer 654572 was built on assembly line 2 on June 17th 1971 give or take a day or two. I estimated the date. All I really know is that the last light duty truck built in flint, line 2, in May 1971 was 649411. And the last LDT built in Flint line 2 in June 1971 was 658369.

Hope that helps and thanks again for the props.
Bruce

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

Amazing! Thank you sir! Confirms my suspicion. I'll keep an eye out for additional 71 Flint K5s but of those so far documented (total 4) all were assembled in June of 71. Perhaps a trial run ahead of the 72 MY when Flint figured prominently in K5 production.
