So here are some pics of breaking down my boxes to get them sandblasted. The blue one is the original, the black one is the back up and was in better condition so I'll use the best pieces of each.

here's a few of my brother's '76 that maybe he'll redo one day.
The grey one is my parts truck...the PO put in a custom grill --- with a hot glue gun that dripped all over! There are a few of my other trucks too but they are very dusty!! |

We built this hood on my white truck out of a C60 1965ish hood I found at the dump, my bro did most of the welding on it!

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rusty Hole'a 1987 SWB 6.0 4L80E
That hood is pretty sweet man. Good job.

Here I'm fooling around with chopping the old hood down seeing how it might work.
Before you send a bunch of posts saying it looks like crap; I'm not finished yet!! I need to think about how it will look painted --- if I can't imagine it, I'm going to just use the stock hood. Stay tuned tomorrow for updates... |
Re: "The Ayatollah of Rusty Hole'a 1987 SWB 6.0 4L80E
Hi there. I just saw this post. Would you happen to have any leftover swb fleetside box parts for sale? What are you doing with the grey '79 GMC? Thanks!

After much trimming and chopping, I started tacking up the joints.
I like this height --- it's a little under 3". Will have to extend it a bit but I have a good idea for that. |
Re: "The Ayatollah of Rusty Hole'a 1987 SWB 6.0 4L80E
Your fabrication skills are amazing! :metal: Wish i knew how to do 1/4 of the stuff you can do with a welder. I'm not sure if i like the hood yet. I'm having a hard time imagining it on the truck. You still have a stock hood if this doesn't work out?

Bought a 77 SWB today that has a 80 front grill on it. Little old 305 in it that will get yanked at some point.
So-so shape, but came with new rubber, decent box, Bell Tech lowering kit, new dash pad, cluster with tach got some other fenders too....pretty good deal in my opinion! |
Re: "The Ayatollah of Rusty Hole'a 1987 SWB 6.0 4L80E
really interested in the dash.... where did you have to take it to get it wrapped and stiched like that???
any local upholstery shop? also, is it genuine leather or some other sort of material? I only ask because I'd still be worried about the material cracking with the amount of exposure to heat and cold that dashes get... amazing build so far |
Re: "The Ayatollah of Rusty Hole'a 1987 SWB 6.0 4L80E
cool truck!

Gord,
Who did the sandblasting of your parts for you? It wasn't the same guy that did your frame was it? Mind me asking cost? |

1.5 hours work for them at just their shop rate. Well worth it veres using a wire wheel to try to get it clean enough to paint! |
Re: "The Ayatollah of Rusty Hole'a 1987 SWB 6.0 4L80E
As usual, thank you sir.
Do you have the name of the shop handy by any chance? Its very hard to find people who will sand blast sheet metal |
Re: "The Ayatollah of Rusty Hole'a 1987 SWB 6.0 4L80E
The 77 looks to be in one piece bro.... nice find.......

Well finally some time to do a bit on the truck...
Got the box back together and getting it ready for primer & going through the cab trying to smooth stuff out. More pics later this week. Slow going! Bright side is I picked up a better air compressor and a sand blasting cabinet for cleaning bolts and small parts. Got both on sale but the cabinet took a day to put together, darn Chinese picture directions!! ;-) |

Getting close to priming the truck parts....got to get rid of that surface rust first tomorrow.
Just for the record, this is what I'm using for primer: 1. self-etching on bare metal 2. medium build 2K 3. after block sanding, using the 2K as a sealer |

Since I had so much surface rust on the roof of my cab I have been focusing on getting it totally prepped and ready for primer this week.
Here it is sanded down and I degreased it last night and let it sit until this morning. This morning I hit the bare spots with self-etching primer and I will leave it sit for a few hours while I go get some supllies to work on the box later! |

Got a bit more done today....
For the pop-up gas fillers, I traced & cut out the fillers on sheet metal, cut it to fit, put a crimp around the filler plate so I could weld a nice finish line around it and have room to putty, I chose the location, cut out the box tie down inserts, slotted the hole so I could slide the inserts in, and welded, then mudded them in. Will insert the fillers after paint though! |

Finished!
No pics about how to weld...enough on the forum here already on that subject! Note too that you do have the choice to go from the bottom up with the filler through the hole in your insert plate. I didn't though because I wanted a slight lip around the gas hole in case I dropped the fuel hose and I didn't want it to chip the paint easily later on. |
