I have to agree....that looks like much less work with most likely better results. I really enjoy watching your build....you do very nice work.

Come on down some time. It should only take 5 minutes to show you everything I know.

I went and picked up the Vintage Air kit today. I think I did good on it. It was new in the box, the guy changed his mind for some reason. Not pictured is the oval controller with 3 knobs and a slide. It's a Gen2 mini. I'm not going to use the polished compressor. I will be getting a serpentine belt kit that comes with the comp.

Man, it takes courage to let your neighbor (sdailey)to cut on your truck.
He did a great job and is some good help. I'm getting him prepped so he can do most of the work on his cab.

Yours truly in action. We got the left end plate welded on and lined up. Now I have to mount the dash around the column then work on the center section.

Thanks. I've got a 383/700R4. I was going to run 373 gears, but I think with a overdrive it will be safe to run a 411 gears down the highway.

I didn't get that good of a deal. You stole that kit. I just want something that can show and go. Mostly original with a few twists. I don't know what catagory that would be.

Thanks to everyone else.

I got a little done tonight. I got the center tied together temporarily until I pull the dash out so I can weld completely. As you can tell I got the top patch welded in.

http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/o...d/DSC07849.jpg

http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/o...d/DSC07852.jpg

I need a little input on this. I'm going to redesign the center section. I'm putting in a pop out DVD player and the oval AC control. I might put a eyeball vent there also or just make a custom panel under the dash to hold the vents. I'm not sure yet. I know the cardboard has squared off corners but I will maintain the rounded edges like the rest of the dash.

I would make a cover that matches the shape of the dash exactly, and then folds down to access the stereo.
maybe put a square ac vent where the original radio was.

I thought I'd share something that can save you some $$. Bodyshops throw alot of metal away. So instead of buying metal there is alot of useable metal that can be used in fabricating stuff. If you know someone in a shop ask them to see if you can get some. Even if you don't know anyone ask the manager. You might get lucky. I picked this piece up today. It's a piece of uniside that wasn't used due to us sectioning the part. It has some good rolls and contours to it that I can use to form up my center section of my dash. I dont have a sheetmetal brake yet so this works pretty because the bends are there. It's also good when your on a tight budget. :metal:

Here is a pic of the Vintage air controller that I just got.

Re: My 1965 build thread

I've been a little lazy. I finally got back at it tonight.

I got a wood heater this weekend now I've got to install it.

http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/o...d/DSC07903.jpg

I got the center area framed up. Don't laugh to hard at my fab skills. I don't have a brake. I could have formed with hand tools, but think this was the easiest way. I used the radius edges off of the uniside that posted a pic of a few post ago to make the frame. The corners of the frame blend right in with the curves of the dash to make the lines flow together.

http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/o...d/DSC07915.jpg

Most everything is tacked in place. I've still got the right side panel to do. Once everything is welded in place I'm going to removed the brace running thru the center behind the radio to open the area so it will be easy to access.

http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/o...d/DSC07918.jpg

I used another part of the 65 dash for the bottom of this enclosure.

I love the way you use other parts to make it all come together. I do that too because it's just easier to be resourceful than building from scratch. But I did finally order a sheet metal brake a few weeks ago. Still waiting for it to show up... :waah:

I got some goodies today. I got these 2.5" drop spindles from CPP and also the tranny crossmember. I test fitted my ball joints as seen in the pix. Everything is for a 72.

I started a thread about the 3 in 1 brake, shear, and roller. I thought it would be te answer to my limited space. Let's see what people have to say. Here is a link to the thread.

It's been awhile since my last post. Had a little cold snap down here that lasted for a week. That's what I blaming it on, but the truth be told I got a little lazy. I did finally install my wood heater.:metal: I fired it up last night for the first time. It was a comfortable 72 at midnight. :metal:

http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/o...d/DSC07954.jpg

I started to work on my dash again last night. I used coat hanger to make a pattern for my brace over the column.

http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/o...d/DSC07957.jpg

The final product is functional and I guess it looks ok. I've still got to patch the area where the old ashtray was.

First bit of color:metal:

I got the dash sand blasted and picked it up today.

http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/o...d/DSC07962.jpg

http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/o...d/DSC07963.jpg

Radio and AC control cutout. I still need to cut out for 2 eyeball vents in the center part of the dash and one on each side of the dash. I also have to figure out how I will mount the defrost vents.

http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/o...d/DSC07961.jpg

Sprayed the first bit of color on the back side of the dash. :metal: I really get motivated when I see some color.

I got the AC vents cut in.

http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/o...d/DSC07985.jpg

http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/o...d/DSC07986.jpg

I have a problem and I need your help. I need your opinion on which defrost vents I should do. I don't want to mount anything on top of the dash due to the look and all of the curves.

This is the pass vent underneath the dash. It's not mounted yet, I've got to figure that out too.

http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/o...d/DSC07978.jpg

Here are the choices

Choice#1: Small mesh type holes

http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/o...DSC07979-1.jpg

Choice #2: About a 3/8" hole in a row

http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/o...DSC07979-2.jpg

Choice #3: 2 slits

http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/o...DSC07979-3.jpg

I can't make up my mind. :smoke: I appreciate the input

Re: My 1965 build thread

In my '63 it had very slim slits almost hidden by the windshild rubber. I'd go with a thin slit to make them almost non-visable.

59-60's had the defost vents in the dash trim, 3 long oval slots.IMO that would be the best look with this dash...
here is a shot, you can barley see them up by the glass:

Just remember the smaller the hole the less of the flow however the pressure might a bit highter, but would cover less of the windshield.
