Thanx yall', appreciate the kind remarks and glad ya like it.

We've been mulling over whether to use the existing frame or not and after much consideration have decided that it would be easier to build a new frame and swap the body over.
I think it will be better, cheaper, and faster...if that's possible??

Anyways, still baby steps for the time being. Spent a couple hours making a new mount for the slave...didn't like the AA version.

Thanks, but when your progress is as slow as mine it's easy to spend time on the little things. For me, I'm saving up $ for the next part of the puzzle and then trying to find time to piece it together:lol:...so it goes slow. :waah:

Case in point, a month plus and all I've managed is a new Muncie triple gear PTO. But, the truck is still running and I've probably put 100+ miles on it over the last few weeks just enjoying our cooler weather!:metal:

Picked up a mid 80's, 1 ton, CC, 4X4 frame that had been lengthened 16" in it's prior life (done right though). Thinking I'm gonna cut a couple feet out of the middle (the area the rises behind the cab) to gain a straight front to rear frame and use that as the new backbone.

My son worked with C&M Performance to modify one of their billet rear output seal housings to work with a HAD driveline brake set-up...surprised me with those and a couple other NP205 billet pieces for Christmas.:metal::metal:

I really like what you are doing with your truck. I also think it is great that your kids got it for you and you have been working together on it to get it together. Keep it up and thanks for posting your updates. I used to have a '69 one ton Chevy and I miss that ol' truck...I bet you love driving yours around, even with the old I6 in it. You have chosen my favorite engine for it and it will be really sweet when you get it together...

Man that is quite the awesome engine and tranny setup.

I love the NV4500, put one in my 72, and now I am fixing to stuff one in my CJ7. It is a great transmission.

Just wanted to say, "Nice Truck!" I'm trying to talk my wife into a '51 1 1/2 ton. I think it would be great to follow your example of driving it and enjoying it while slowly working up to a complete rebuild. Also, your craftsmanship and welding are great. Some of the stuff you made for your son's 4x4 was just amazing. Keep up the good work.

RockTonka 03-08-2012 12:22 AM

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Thanks cAlvis165 and Wheelie for the props!

It seems to work out well slowly building up parts on the side while still being able to drive and enjoy the truck whenever I want. I don't get burned out looking at a pile of parts that I can't enjoy...I know that eventually I will be able to swap everything over and I enjoy making progress when time and funds allow. It doesn't cost much to keep the truck insured and driveable and that keeps the flame lit. :chevy:

I would really like to do more or less the same thing, to a neighbor of mine's 68 c30 if I can ever get ahold of it. it's a dually 138" wb 327 2v. Former grain truck and power company truck, original paint minimal rust. No dump bed though, current owner uses it as a wood truck.

How about a couple engine pics?? :chevy:

My son liked the Edelbrock valve covers/air cleaner we had refurbished and used on mine, more so than I did, so we pulled them off and put them on his.

He was cruising CL and found this shotgun style scoop for cheap, so we chased down some valve covers that kinda matched and dropped them all on mine...I'm digging these more. :metal:

Well you've gone and done it. You've made me feel jealous, inadequate, and a couple of other emotions. This is pretty much the truck that I have been looking for! Gotta have 4x4 and maybe a plow mount for winter time up here in CO. I settled on a '48 1 1/2 ton (http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...58#post5397758) for now, but after seeing this I know there is no way that I can be satisfied. You've got me thinking of posting my new '48 for sale before I even start working on her!

I really liked the idea of the 4bt...whatever happened to that engine?

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

We just moved to a new place with shop space and have been working on getting everything organized. I kept the truck running to keep it easy to move around, but it's "scheduled" to get worked on soon! I really hope to have a rolling chassis in the next few weeks...months...eventually:lol:

Dub_X 01-04-2013 02:02 AM

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

 Well, I think we all know how the "eventually" is. Whether it gets done in weeks...months...years...oh hell it'll get done eventually. Just thought I'd ask. I've run through the whole build several times. Would love to see that thing on that newer chassis with a full 4x4 conversion.

Orrie where did you find this picture. I would like to get some more info about that shop.

How do yall think that pinon brake will work? Do you plan on doing a rear disc swap on that 14 bolt?

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

I am pretty sure I just did a google search on this site OR on google images and grabbed the first Longhorn that showed up.

The output brake "should" work fairly well...don't think I'd trust my life to it, but it should hold the truck in place within reason. My boy got all the parts together a year or so ago to do a rear disc set-up on the 14B...we will probably build up another 14B housing for the new rolling chassis and keep the truck driving until the last second.

Couple pics at the new place...

 I think I may have ya beat on the 4x4 conversion. I'm in the process of converting my '92 shortbed to a Z71. Working on stripping the Z71 frame, then it's gonna get some new parts, get the frame all done, then drop my 350 from my 92 in it, and my 700r4 and transfer case from my 88. HOPE to have it done within the next couple of months.
