Thanks Curt!
I wanna see how yours is coming along!

Ok so a little progress doing odds and end little things.
Ordered a new thornbeck bros. tubular transmission crossmember
Tore out the A/c unit because as much as I'd hate to spend the money, I think I'm gonna eventually get that vintage air under dash setup.
Pulled out the old trans xmember.
Installed some billet brake, accelerator, and e-brake pedals.
Plus other random small things.

I have a question, does anyone know how to shorten e brake cables?

And also I've decided on the next big step of my project, I am going to section my crossmember 1.5".
It's either this, or "Z"ing my fame probably 2inches.
The reason I am thinking about the section, is because it is more self contained and I can remove it and transport it to a sandblaster or welder much easier than moving the whole truck. Plus I think it's less things I need to get like metal plates and such. But if someone can shed enough info to sway me, I'm all for it.

Oh and does anyone know where to buy sandblasting material locally? I picked up a little sb gun for $12 bucks at attwoods so I thought if give it a try. Lol

x2 on "z'ing" the frame....but I'd go 3" to make it worthwhile...in case you decide to get bigger wheels etc...

Woah mineralgrey! They're like twins! Lol.
Well since I took out the a/c, I replaced the small front tires, now I'm running 235/70/15 all around.
Today when I got home from school, I did a little work...
http://i901.photobucket.com/albums/a...y/6cf960ff.jpg

The crossmember is out!!!!
It's too late to turn back now! Haha.
I figure as of right now I'm going to section the crossmember 1.5".
I chose to do the x-member instead of the Z because I'm not wanting really an extreme drop, and this will keep my lca's from dragging off. And if I want to z it later, I can either just do a small Z or sell the crossmember. I like the peace of mind that this is a reversible option, even though I don't think this truck will ever see stock again. ;)

great idea! if you had to sell it one day, no one would ever know it was sectioned....i dont think you'd sell it after all this work though. and i wouldnt blame you.....sweet truck, you've got skills man, keep the pics coming!

I took the crossmember to the car wash and removed about 5 lbs of grime! Lol
Then I tried out my $12 sandblaster from Attwoods. It did pretty great for the price. It took the old paint right off. Though it had trouble getting the surface rust off, and couldn't remove dirt or grime at all. But overall it works. Then I drew on all my marks so it's ready to cut and weld! I'm gonna wait til early next week when this guy is gonna help me use his plasma cutter.

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build

I don't know anything about this stuff so could you explain something to me? How is this going to allow you to get lower. Shouldn't the bottom of the crossmember have been brought up not the top brought down? I'm just not seeing it I guess...

joe231 04-13-2012 09:15 PM

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build

Bringing the top down brings the bottom up in relation to the frame
The piece cut down is where the frame sits on the crossmember so this brings all the suspension higher which lowers the truck...

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build

The three bolt holes on the outside on each side is the surface that bolts to the bottom of the frame. Moving that section down will allow you to slide the entire assembly up on the frame rails.

Got my crossmember all welded up!! It's all welded then I ground down all the welds and it looks pretty good.*

The first picture is of some reinforcement I welded into the bottom to better support a jack.

Thanks guys! I appreciate it. The crossmember took a lot of work but hopefully now I won't drag my lca's off! Lol
Now I've run into a different dilemma, my crossmember won't fit into my sandblasting cabinet!!

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build

Well as of yesterday, Dunday May 13, 2012, I am a high school graduate!!! :bann:
Now I don't have anything getting in the way of me and my truck! (until I have to get a summer job to pay for it lol)

Well I haven't got much done recently, but I've started accumulating some minor parts and painting up some new ones and sandblasting and painting some old ones.
First here's a picture of my new rotors made for a 91 camaro 1LE performance package. Same measurements all around and uses the same bearings. Only difference would be the 5x4.75 bolt pattern, which opens up my wheel choices. Here they are after I painted them.
I'm getting adapters for the rear. Any suggestions on where to get them?

http://i901.photobucket.com/albums/a...y/f1716d8d.jpg

I also painted up my oil pan and some interior parts, then I painted, then baked on the paint on my exhaust manifolds. Heres a before and after. Now they're both done.

http://i901.photobucket.com/albums/a...y/549a7cbc.jpg

Word of advice, don't use your moms oven to heat cure exhaust paint. It turns out it makes them very, very unhappy. Lol

I just got done reading your entire build, Your welding has improved 100%, good job there. And your truck is coming out awsome, can't wait to see it on the road. You will deffently enjoy it more cause you built it yourself, there is always more pride in that. Keep up the good work i'm really enjoying your build.:metal:

nice build!

hey, i wanted to ask you about those manifolds your running on the motor...do you have driver side dipstick?

i have those same manifolds on mine, but they pinch the crap out of the dipstick tube and i cant even get it back in. wondering what your using...thanks

maxxxy 05-23-2012 12:42 AM

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build

Thanks Texas truck junky! I really appreciate the praise.

Kev2809: I'm still assembling my engine and I don't even have a dipstick tube yet. But have you thought about the braided flex dipstick tubes like you can get for a transmission?

I got my newly painted front suspension almost all reassembled minus a few little things. *I got new upper control arm bushings and all new upper an lower ball joints. Then I got my new camaro 1LE rotors installed.

Here's the reason I swapped to the camaro rotors.*
My buddy and I worked out a deal and I ended up with these: d'vinci Lox 22x9 rims with pretty good *265/35/22 tires. They're about 29"tall. Which is an inch or so taller. I need to do a little inner fender trimming which I expected. * *After that I should be able to drop another 5-6".

Whats the specs on that hood? is it fiberglass? did you build it?

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build

lookin good do have the sectioned crossmember installed?

maxxxy 05-23-2012 11:21 PM

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build

Yeah the cowl hood is fiberglass. I think earlier in my build I said something about it. I traded this older lady who ha just bought a square body suburban with the cowl hood straight across for my stock hood if I painted it the one I gave to her. But the cowl hood doesn't fit quite like I like. It's a little bowed in the middle and sticks about a 1/4" above the fenders.

I do have the sectioned crossmember in, but my new upper ball joints are binding and won't let me go down as much as before. :dohh:

Cool build. Question about the front rotors. I don't know anything about the 1LE package. Are these rotors different than a standard '91 camaro rotor? Where did you buy the rotors? I would like to do the same. I assume you are using the rest of the stock 81 truck calipers and pads?
