I love the color combination. Looks great. Also the white bumper is refreshing.

I found one locally here in Columbia, SC. Pretty far gone but the SPID caught my eye. It's not mine but it is for sale if someone is brave! Part of me wants to go peel back the seat cover but I have a bad habit of dragging stuff home and the wife will KILL me!

Here's the link: http://columbia.craigslist.org/cto/4767646364.html

Here's a pic of the SPID for when the posting expires or is removed. Bet it was a great looking truck in its day!

Tropical Snowstorm maybe you should drag that Highlander home. It has the 'C" promo package which includes ,tilt. Chrome below eye line mirrors, Chrome front bumper and the PA1 wheel covers and I wish my truck would have been ordered with that package. That truck would look great redone. Mine is highlander without the "C " and the same colour except my roof is dark olive and this truck has the white roof.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Not exactly the same "look" there.
A Conventionl Two-Tone of white over medium green is a nice combination. But a lot of people dislike the "spear" effect of the upper molding alone as was standard with the Promo Package Highlanders. The PA1 wheelcovers seem to be a love or hate look with most of the checkmarks going in the later column.

Funny that doesn't have the "Deluxe" trim band on the rear.

I see that White over Light Olive was incredibly popular, there's one I saw driving by me and quite a few on this thread alone...

Nothing wrong back there. The deluxe woodgrained tailgate band was used on the 69-72 CST, Cheyenne and Cheyenne Super trim levels. The black bands are repo marketing and were not stock. This truck has the correct upper and lower tailgate moldings.

I only meant that since it's such a highly optioned truck it seems strange the band wasn't also put on.

I wish we could pick options like that now instead of "convenience packages"

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

That band wasn't an option by itself like most things - it was part of a trim level - since all highlanders are Custom Deluxe trim level, none should ever have the band.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Its important to remember unlike today it was not uncommon to see a base trim truck loaded up with options or, once in a while, a no option Cheyenne Super (Super Stripper?).

My Highlander has the band, wood grain with the rest of the trim black seems out of place.
The truck has all the stock trim, has to be original.

SS Tim 11-27-2014 01:53 AM

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Having all the "stock trim" does not necessarily mean its original to that truck. The pictures previously posted clearly show much of the trim was off your truck when you bought it. Unless you can document that band as factory installed on that truck, I'd say it had been added somewhere along the line. This is based on the original stock trucks I know of and my research. From what I know of your truck as a Conventional Two-Tone (534) with upper (B85) and lower (BX2) bodyside moldings, it should have the upper and lower tailgate moldings with white painted letters.
Over the years a lot of trucks have been backfitted with upgrade parts and options.
Remember a tailgate is an easily swapped part.

While on the subject of tailgates.

My truck has been discussed earlier in this (Post #7) and in other threads. It is the GMC with the documented 611 Blue Plaid Cloth which had been previously removed.

Regarding the tailgate trim and paint, I know that the band was likely added by a PO which I will remove. Also the paint on the tailgate is blue between the upper and lower moldings which does not match the 481 White / Hawaiian two tone on the rest of the truck. To return this to its original factory look of a Super Custom GMC what would the paint pattern be for the tailgate? The embossed "GMC" is present under the band. My guess is that it would be white between the moldings to match the rest of the truck but what color would the GMC letters be and the indented background behind the letters.
Thanks in Advance.

While we have talked about your truck I'm not sure I'd call it "Documented". There were and in my mind still are questions about your SPID.
Regardless, as far as I know a 72 Super Custom with a 400 series two-tone should look like this. White letters in a body color field within the white between the upper and lower tailgat moldings.

You are correct my SPID was questionable as the font was not correct as it was probably lost and the re-typed at some point. However I did validate the contents of the SPID with GM Canada's Vintage Vehicle services and in fact all the options listed on the SPID are valid. Here is the screen shots of the letter for your reference.

So it is a "documented" GMC with Plaid.:metal:

Thanks for the pics of the tailgate. That is what I plan to do.

Why didn't GM USA record similar data?! Sigh...

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Well done Larry! That is truely "Documented"! I only wish that service were available on US built and delivered trucks. But then a lot of trucks here (and up there even) probably wouldn't be Cheyenne Supers if they were tracable! For the $80 odd dollars that runs IIRC it is a great resource.
Thank You for posting the letter in full.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Thanks Tim for your expert feedback. This is a great resource for these trucks and I am glad to be part of it.

I already have the plaid cloth but I am ordering the parchment vinyl with scroll and piping from SMS Auto Fabrics and I am going to have it sewn up with the plaid stripes vertical as we discussed in another thread.

:truck:
Just consigned our YG7 guacamole plaid yesterday with a classic car place in Dallas that is both an eBay seller and a brick and mortar showroom. Don't know what I'm allowed to say here, so watch for it.

Hope someone, or some couple, will enjoy many "Home Depot & ice cream" trips! (* no ice cream allowed INSIDE the truck)

Posting up the SPID from my '72. If I understand everything I've read in this and other threads, it's a highlander, but I noticed that it doesn't say plaid on the SPID anywhere. It's got houndstooth inserts now, but I know that the seats have been redone. Can anyone confirm that the seats were originally plaid by looking at this?

Your truck is a YG8 Promo Package "C" Highlande. Originally it had a 618 Orange plaid seat in a 516 Orange truck with a 521 White roof painted in the Conventional Two-Tone scheme. This is exactly why we I started this thread to uncover former Highlanders, both Promo Package and Plaid trim upgrades, hidden by modification.
