Thanks DW!

Kinda looks like the seat is going to work:metal:, might of been room to make it an 1-1.5" wider and maybe an inch or so shorter. The base is sitting about an inch higher than the stock bench in the pics...might lower it a bit to bring the back lower relative to the window, but would like to keep the leg room increase too. Close enough to work either way though. Picked up some gut room too

That looks like it fits pretty cool in there.

Should be easy to adjust the height with your mounting system.

Looks good in there.

Worked a bit on the seat over the weekend. Made a simple mount that utilized the stock holes, dropping the seat a just a bit under the rear window. Put a bit of lean to it, but still gained gut room and a higher seat...very comfortable for me. (6 ft. tall fat ass)

Loving the seat, put a few trips down to Sonic and around town running errands with the wife and dog...almost makes ya feel like your driving around in a new truck sitting up high and proud :lol:

I hear ya Baja...I'm not looking forward to taking it down for the heart transplant. I want to have everything staged and ready before we start, hopefully it will go fast.

Glad to hear the seat is working out how you hoped.

That seat looks great. I really like the build. Nothing better than seeing a big truck being brought back to life and the fact you guys get to enjoy it already.

Thanks for the comments, it keeps us motivated!

The wife was tired of seeing the back of the hood sitting high and set me up with some new hinges/springs for Christmas:metal::metal:

What method did you use to remove and install the springs? Wood wedges? Special tool?

RockTonka 01-01-2011 02:47 AM

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Nothing special, I bent a small semi-hook at the bottom of a tapered pry bar and cammed off the forward hinge mount bolt to pull the spring toward the firewall and hook/unhook, it's easier with the hood removed.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

I have seen them spread with a floor jack and wrenchs inserted into the opened spring. Attach and pull the wrenchs. I always just used a brake spring tool or grabbed them with vice grips and strong armed it.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Yeah... vice grips and a quick tug seemed to be the fastest, easiest way for me, too. New hinges are nice.

Worked on the front axle a bit this weekend. Thought I'd have to get a new carrier because of worn spiders/cross pin and was thinking a detroit, but didn't want to spend the money for it. Fortunately, we were able to salvage parts from another old carrier, get a passable pattern on the old R&P, and reuse the open carrier.
So the front is together and ready, but I'm still struggling with pulling a NV4500/205 together on the cheap...looks like I'm going to bite the bullet and have one built.
I want to pull this into a buddy's shop within the next few weeks and start the tear down.
