Thanks OB.

Shifter: the enclosure will be moved forward, bolted on with custom brackets, and the shift rod shortened accordingly.

Roof rack: Yes I will go with a vintage style rack when the time comes ;) In fact I have a VW rack with wood slats I may restore/mod to fit.

Thanks for the backup Jvsapp

I made some more progress last night. Basically just more cutting/trimming to get the frame section and crossmember closer to fitting. I ended up needing to make a C-Notch in the Minx frame to clear the rear/lower arm mount. Pics to follow...

The vintage VW rack with wood would look killer on there.
I didnt mean to sound like I didnt like a roof rack at all just something other than the modern one.

I thought of 1 more tiny thing. Use a muffler that wont make it sound like a ricer. But knowing you theres no way it would sound like a fart cannon, so m probably safe there.

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

I'm not really sure what type of muffler will give it the non-rice sound but I won't be happy till I find it. Initial plans are to run the full length header the engine came with, 2.5" pipe into a 40 series flowmaster I have in the parts bin, and a long tail pipe all the way back. Hopefully it'll have a decent sound, but I'll swap mufflers more than once if needed.

hence the reason my 20V corolla has the stock muffler under it. i was contemplating a stock subaru WRX muffler. i mean stock they flow 260HP so it should be sufficient for my car, yet still quiet. but the flowmaster 40 will add a little growl there. just stay away from the import N1 style mufflers. those are the fart cans that are obnoxious and loud.

A buddy of mine build a 1989 nissan 240sx for drag racing and swapped in a turbo engine from the jap equilivant car. I couldnt tell ya what size the engine was but it was a 4 cyl rear wheel drive.

ANYWAY he had an exhaust cutout for racing but on the street he used this muffler and it had a deep throaty sound like a little corvette. I recall him telling me it was a cheapo from autozone or something.

http://www.holley.com/types/Raptor.asp

I tried one on my 2.8L v6 S-10 pickup, and it sounded good as well. I noticed it was fairly quiet until I got into the upper RPMs. Just a sugestion.

Oh by the way mine was 2.5" inlet/outlet.

probably was a SR20DET. the raptor muffler i have one on my nova. it's pretty tame :D but mine is probably 2" in and out.

I also have one of those raptor mufflers on my toyota truck(its a 4 cylinder) and it doesnt sound bad. I also had a daily driver nissan x cab truck with a hi flow converter and a 2chamber flowmaster and it was loud when I got in the throttle...

the issue with subaru exhaust is the cat's.. the muffler will free up tonsof power when you drop it (on a subaru) but it's thecat system that totally neuters thecar..
once you do intake and exhaust it is a beast...
sorry.. subarus come secondto chevy's

Makes me wonder if FF is gonna use the kitty or not. my 20V corolla i lucked out i had a high flow cat from my OBX header i had on the original motor sitting in a box. the header that came with my clip was larger than the stock one so all i had to do was slot the holes on the high flow one and it bolted up.

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

all i can say from my stint with imports is that the CAT is the worse part..
but man i LOVE subaru mufflers.. it's like bassani it's soooo .. i dunno.. distinct..
not to hijack..
fry i WOULD NOT run a magna flow.. they have gotten expensive and are toooooooo quiet... i hear the intake on my buddies built ranger before i hear the exhaust and that bugs me..make me thing of a honda civic..
just my .02

No cat. The 40 series shouldn't be too quiet. I just don't know how it will sound at 9000 rpm. Can't wait to find out!

Ok, I left off where I needed to C-Notch the frame to clear the lower/rear arm bushings. Here's that:

Next step is to align the S2000 frame rail exactly where I need it and tack it in place. Then mock up the suspension components and check for issues. This is how it sits now with the S2000 frame section just sitting in its rough location:

You mean a ply-wood cut-out? No, but I have the wheels/tires I will be using. Haven't mocked up the susp far enough to mount them in the front yet. I already know they will sick out too far. I will be making custom A-arms to address this.

I'm heading to the PIR cruise-in tonight. How about tomorrow?

All I can say is, WOW. The reason most would never consider this kind of project is because of the fact just about every step requires a custom fabrication of some sort. It's not just about cutting this piece of sheetmetal and welding in that one. It's things like the clutch pedal assembly, the use of the cruise control cable rather than the throttle cable, and that front suspension swap would be a deal breaker for just about anyone. I'm sure you have that figured out, but I look at those pics, and the misalignment on the frame rails, and how the inner fenders will need mods, and, and, and... I will just have to wait for the results.

I love the cleverness of the homemade notching tool. I would have just tried to muscle it in there, or use the grinder.

The car is not my thing, but I really appreciate the effort involved. It will be fun to drive, no doubt about that.

FF,

As much as you have changed the original structure, have you considered designing and installing sub-frame connectors along with all the rest of your excellent work. I think I can safely say that, with your mods and the added power, your car will need the extra strenghthening both fore and aft and diagonally.

Just something to consider.

I like taking paths not likely to be followed. When we have talent like LFD and Porterbuilt around it makes achieving that goal exponentially more difficult. That's a good thing IMO because, at least for me, it pushes the limits of what's possible. I agree that it looks like a cluster at this point but not to worry; I have the vision ;)

I'm planning to install cross bracing as well as diagonal braces from the shock towers to the firewall. Maybe even a lateral strut brace as well. You're right, It will definately need all the rigidity I can throw at it.
