been sittin at work in the middle of the night reading all your posts and both builds, and i feel so inept. just the way you think out and solve issues/problems/visions is the work of a true innovator. my friends and family tell me how good i am when they see my work, but i don't think i can hold a candle to you. i have both a 68 swb fleet and a 72 blazer in the works for more than 7 years now, and can't find the time to devote to them, but you are truly the inspiration i need (and a few grand:lol: ) to crank back up. keep it up, we appreciate your work, and watching you do it. maybe i might be able to impress you one day.

i don't want to short change others like Rokclrn, HartRod, and quite a few others as i am equally impressed by every tread they post. they too, are excelllent innovators/thinkers/doers

There really are some true talents on this board. It's a huge compliment to be considered among them. I doubt I would have done half the stuff I've done if it weren't for this board :metal: Thanks for the comments. I'll be posting a BIG update soon ;)

It was a little bouncy  Shocks are going in today.

I have an issue with the rear floor... It's where the driveshaft wants to be... :(

There are a few pics here. More to come.

Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*

Ok I've got some catching up to do on progress pics. Here's the rest of the air management:

This is the ECU for the Easy Street digital air management system. I suppose it's meant to be mounted to the frame because they made the harnesses so short you really don't have much choice. Since this is a Burb I was able to find a nice dry spot INSIDE the vehicle to mount it with barely enough slack in the harnesses.

Finalized the compressor wiring:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1183505394

Here you can see the ECU and compressor relay:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1183505394

Here it is with the ECU mounted behind the taillight (you can see the top mounting screw):
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1183505394

I ran the compressor power and ECU power wires up the D-pillar, in the track above the windows and down the A-pillar. The 12 gauge comp power goes straight to my stereo circuit breaker which is fed by 0-gauge from the batt:

Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*

Start on the Notch:

First I removed the shock crossmember (kinda dark, I know):
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1183505394

I had previously welded in this crossmember in front of the tank to add frame rigidity. At this point I though about removing it but decided there was no need o take it out. I would just have to make the notch fit around it:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1183505394

Positioning upper plates; I used this bar to set them level in reference to each other:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1183505394

Here's where the driver's side ended up You can see where the frame had to be trimmed to get the inner plate to side flat against the rail:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1183505394

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1183505394

Test fitting the inner plate after making a template and trimming it to fit around that crossmember:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1183505394

Burned it in:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1183505394

Welded the inside as well while I had access:

Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*

The passenger side needed a tiny corner cut off to fit in front of that crossmember (sorry no pics of that).

The outer plates were trimmed slightly to match the angles of the lower rails:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1183505394

...and here the OG frame section is gone and the lower plates are in:

Nice work. Do you have a bender, or do you just use the vise and hammer technique like I would?

Frizzle Fry 07-04-2007 12:05 AM

Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*

Thanks Krue :D

Pat, it was a pre-made kit from KP Components Link here ...and yes, I do the vice/hammer thing too ;) KP uses a press brake to bend these and they fit very well (all frames are slightly different so they're as close as they can be). Sure I could have made it, but skipping the that headache was well worth the money to me.

Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*

Next I cut/drilled the holes for the bags:

POR-15'd the areas where the bags mount (will do rest later):

Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*

You can see in that last pic how close the drive shaft is to the floor :( That's with the axle tube basically sitting where the frame used to be (no lower than without a notch).

So... I'll be making a tunnel including modifying the trailing arm crossmember and two rear floor braces

Because of this I've made some wood blocks to prevent it from going any lower than that for now.

Frizzle Fry 07-04-2007 01:33 AM

Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*

Next the cross-brace/bridge/shock-mount:

I stuck with the keep it simple concept and made up this using lower mounts from suicide doors (nice pieces), and some of their studs in a 2x2 at the top:

http://s6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...2651Medium.jpg

The camera is angled here but the shocks are very close to parallel with the bags (FBSS):
http://s6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...2655Medium.jpg

The bottom of the right shock is just dirty... I'll get a better shot of this:
http://s6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...2653Medium.jpg

Frizzle Fry 07-04-2007 01:37 AM

Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*

So, without the front bags in yet I set the rear where I think it looks good vs. the front (tiny rake) and snapped some shots. This is pretty close to full lift in the rear  With the current shocks it'll come down about 6" from this point

http://s6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...2658Medium.jpg

http://s6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...2661Medium.jpg

Down a little more... Still has a LOT more to go:

Awesome build!! Can't wait to see this one finished.
I have a question on your flip up rear door. How does it latch or lock when it's closed? Thanks & keep up your great work. Brad

I'll tell ya, but it'll cost either the 55 or the FJ ;)

Alright I guess that's a little steep :o The original tailgate latches work just like normal. The gate is basically vertical when they latch just like when it's hinged from the bottom. Simplicity :)

I saw a 65? Chevy panel truck yesterday at the Brothers show & it's owner had made the rear tailgate & window a 1-piece lift-up kinda like what you are doing. He used the stock upper hinges for that make & year of panel. He did say that he had to modify the rain gutter some in the back so the door wouldn't hit it when it opened. Also mentioned the hinges are hard to find.
I know you were thinking of making your own hinges. Thought I would pass this hinge idea to you. Maybe you have already explored this idea. Keep us posted,Brad

Hmmm... very interesting. I appreciate the info. It's cool that you noticed and thought of this build:metal: I'll have to post a question about it over on the 60-66 board. :)

Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*

Anyone who has read this whole novel knows that this is my daily driver. So, I have to do the major work that takes it down for any period (a day or more) on the weekends. I can't wait to get the front bagged but just can't do it during the work week.

But I do find a few hours here and there on weekdays to knock minor stuff out.

So... I decided this had served it's time honorably and deserved a nice retirement:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1184213035

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1184213035

No, not just the cap...
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1184213035

...and not just the filler neck
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1184213035

but first let's modify that a little bit.

I cut the neck back and drilled a hole in the inner tube so that the vent tube would still function:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1184213035

here's why
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1184213035

and that cap is pretty "deep" so it will actually seal around that inner tube; thus the drilled hole
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1184213035

The Hagan door assembly I chose puts the cap at a 45* down angle to the side of the vehicle. Since the OG neck is more like 55-60* the tube was cut at the appropriate angle to accommodate:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1184213035

A little protection and she's ready
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1184213035

Frizzle Fry 07-12-2007 12:30 AM

Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*

Next up; prep for the knife:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1184213035

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1184213035

I wanted to center the door in the stock cap position which meant putting the whole assembly off center. It's this way because the hinge is on one side:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1184213035

I also wanted to avoid disturbing the stock "tunnel" that houses the filler tube. Here it is after drilling out some spot welds and removing the factory filler section
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1184213035

Frizzle Fry 07-12-2007 12:42 AM

Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*

The door assembly had to be modified a bit to get it to fit in that tunnel:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1184213035

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1184213035

On top of that I still had to take some material off the right and bottom of the door skin to get the box to fit in the tunnel. So I ended up with gaps on the top and left:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1184213035

The hoses ended up needing to be trimmed back about 1"
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1184213035

Here's how it turned out:
