Re: LT1 GenV swap

Was excited and then bummed at the same time about the L83 swap headers from speed engineering. E-mailed them and asked what did they mock them on, what mounts.. basically LS swap headers with L83 flange. I've already bought all the exhaust bends, custom flanges and collectors so I wont ne buying them. Based on their reply, passenger side will should look like this:

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img922/695/MJoMjh.jpg

And didn't snap a picture of the driver side cause it just wouldn't bolt flush, hit the frame. So I would be curious if someone buys them and posts up how it fits.

Got the electric fan shroud all cut out and mocked up, just need to break it down and fully weld it. Took a 19" 600 watt PWM fan , rigged up a surfacing fixture and used a router to make the edge pretty flat. Pleased how it turned out, now the cooling portion of the swap will operate like factory. Tested it and man it moves some air!

End is near.. planning on October ish hopefully.

Is the gen 5 wider/angled differently? Mine fit like magic (gen3):

Not sure, but defintatly didn't fit.. someone will buy them and post their review.
They mentioned having the motor 1" rear offset.. I have my motor pushed back as far as it could go, mount brackets close to vacuum pump and compressor.

This Saturday, I plan on getting the driver side header done. I've got the flanges, and starter tubes made so it's time to get these made!

Got all the tubes to about 3/4 tall which is the thickness of the MDF flange I'm using for mockup.

Need to make 12 more starter tubes , 4 for the other side and 8 for the other set and put an ad on Ebay. With the starter tubes should make it stand out and hopefully sell quick since it makes it easy for the fabricator. Need to recoup some costs of the header build.

Re: LT1 GenV swap

Re did the header mockup, got a little more room and made it closer to equal length as I could.. wasn't trying for it, but turned out good. No special spark plug wires required:)

These plumbing caps work great if u needed to purge a tube.. I dont have that setup, be nice but works good for leak testing... just drill a hole in the middle of the bolt and connect a hose to it. I made one, just need to find it.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img922/4186/1UQHD5.jpg

Also, if you take it apart and have some BMW n62 valve cover bolts laying around (I'm a BMW Master tech, and just happened to have a few old ones in my tool box), you can take the rubber grommet off, push the bolt out, shorten the sleeve and presto, tight fitting insert that can be pushed into the small disc end so it can then be used to mount/hold a tube to the mockup MDF flange. Just snug the bolt to the flange and test fit till it grips the tube. Wrapping tape around a bolt and washer works too..

Slow progress, but 2 tubes fully welded, 3rd all tacked and ready to be welded. Ran out of time tonight.

Fits pretty good

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img924/7848/nJWy95.jpg

Time got divided between another project. Got a good deal on a set of the Wilwood c-10 pro spindle kit. With hours of research and cad work and think I got a working setup. 330mm x26mm /13" x 1.25 rotor on the C6 Corvette calipers. Corvette rotors wont work on these massive hubs. Got another rotor in mind that only requires a small mod. It looks like it may not clear my 17" torq lite American racing wheels.. they did a goofy stupid inner barrel design and it has such an angle it makes putting wheel weights on a bear.. so if the 13" setup doesn't fit, just gonna use the larger 350mm / 13.7" rotor and c6 caliper.

Re: LT1 GenV swap

Got a little side tracked but now back on track.
Wilwood c-10 pro spindles with 328mmx30mm rotor and the dual 52mm piston PBR gmt900 caliper from 08+ trucks.

Phew, successfully successful in mockup! I have about 1/8 of room between the caliper and rim/wheel weights.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img923/2566/tqryaw.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img922/5909/e1Szx7.jpg

If I had larger than 17" wheels I could have done the 350mmx32mm rotors but dont so didnt...

Re: LT1 GenV swap

nice build thread. subscribed! is there an easier way to swap in the LT1 gen V engine and transmission? is it so new that the aftermarket hasn't caught up yet? Are there any issues with this swap? Who makes a LT1 GenV harness? are there Adapter plates to mount the motor? who flashes the PCM's to operate in a standalone? the reason im asking these question is because ive done a few LSx Gen 3 and Gen swaps. im trying to stay abreast with this information.

I've done 4 harness so far. Aftermarket makes mounts and speed engineering released headers but no one here get has a set installed. One member recently bought a set for his Lt swap but havnt seen I stall pictures. Pcm.. any tuner

The LT1 Gen V is a different animal imo. I used the BRP swap headers and they fit perfect.

Dirty Dingo have some swap stuff for the swap specific to 63-72 c10’s.
The demand isn’t real big yet, so many items are pricey. I know of a guy that did my harness, again, pricey but he was an excellent source for info.

One huge hurdle I had was a different year of trans, that stumped a lot of tuners. We finally got that resolved tho.

I am by no means even an amateur at these swaps but, I am willing to tell you what has worked for me so far.

Btw, truck is running and driving, just doing some minor tweaks before calling it done.

Good luck!

@clyde65 and 87chevy.com, thanks for your replys. I have a friend, that has a friend, that trying to move a motor. I'm just looking at time and energy factor. I can easily swap in another gen III and Gen IV and call it a day. it ma

It's more money than LS for sure.. but its newer, more power, more gears :)

Re: LT1 GenV swap

Driver side just needs the collector diameter shrunk down to 2.5" before welding itto the header but other thanthat, driver side is done.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img921/7986/zX94rY.jpg

Final tube fit great after fully welding it .. phew

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img924/5076/T6ke2M.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img922/7687/vY4Jwu.jpg

Fits great around the motor mount, knock sensor shield and stock linkage

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img922/755/H6svlX.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img921/6379/hUVchY.jpg

Gonna take the collector to work and use the shrinking cone to see if I can have one less weld...

Made the mock up passenger side header, not as easy as I thought, but not to bad.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img922/127/M4BhAB.jpg

One down, 3 to go..

Clint

Knocked out one more

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img922/972/8cOtIJ.jpg

Got the first 3 bends cut out for #1 and the. Called it a day.. as difficult as #1 looks, is easier to work with than #3. I'll go about it the same way once tube #1 is all tacked up I weld the starter tubes to the flange. Afterwards
I will surface it aka belt sander it flat. Install the flange and start tacking the 3 tubes to the flange, then tack the tubes at the collector. All that's left is to remove the header and fab tube #2.

I do wish I had bought a double hump crossmember though.. maybe I'll just mod the one I already made.. or just leave it

Re: LT1 GenV swap

Ran out of argon.. but before I did, managed to get most of the header tubes fully welded to the flange, and got the final tube chopped out and tacked up.
