thanks nut. I have a fair amount of project management in my work history, seems less and less likely I am going to pay a contractor 10-15% to do what I end up doing anyway.


doug I cut with a straightedge, actually just a big piece of 1x1 rectangle tube. I finalized the patterns on the last truck, and made them 1" taller for this truck, which has saved just so many problems.


I havent done anything lately but screw up haha. I sold some parts I had kicking around and managed to ruin a few taking them off. this morning I broke a die cast piece that was actually sold, saw 75% of the value evaporate haha.

I did lay some paint on the hood to blend it. remember that I still will steel wool it and make the rusted parts smoother and make the painted parts feather on the edge.

busy with real job stuff, not a lot of progress which is frustrating because there isnt a lot left to do.

got the rear brakes bled finally. sucked on em with the harbor frieght vacuum bleeder forever, finally it took the old trick of the length of hose submerged in a bottle before getting good squirts. glad thats over.

after being so blasted by the "every little thing leads to a big thing" on these last two 41s, I decided to sell the last 41 cab on. that truck doesnt quite have all the parts to finish a third and the parts that are missing are expensive. actually, all 41 parts have a certain intrinsic high cost, so I have been peeling stuff off to sell on, one high value item is the windshield regulator. this 41 Hannah had a regulator that needed some help to open and shut but it should be fine. well after removing the dash from the last parts truck and lubing it up, this one works PERFECTLY. so the half working one is for sale haha.

grunted the bed on solo. my wife helped last time and while it was great doing all the lifting and holding while she pushed the wrong direction under my... direction, I decided it couldnt be worse doing it alone. you can see the gas cap broke because the installer was too dumb to remove it before installing the bed

guy who had me pull the cab apart because he was buying it, shined me. nice.

not a ton left to do here though, running, moving, stopping, cooling, steering, and darn near water tight. ok maybe not water tight. maybe more like water resistant. hmm, maybe not that either. whats that thing you strain spaghetti with? a colander. this truck is a water colander, should allow rain and puddles in liberally

You know, it is fascinating to watch the regulator work back and forth. Back and forth...a wonder they work very long before breaking.

oh they wear out! the last truck worked great until it didnt.

had a loose spot on the windshield rubber so I took it out and used some more urethane on it. made a plastic tool for the rear window seal out of an old lawnmower gas tank and bought a bead lock tool. the back window is in but not bead locked.

neighbor popped by with a 50 chevy horn button he found in his garage. I love that guy, what a great neighbor and friend. I have a picture of him in a tree maybe 25 ft up. he just turned 70!

I loved every bit of it. it has a datsun truck IFS and brake system, he said it really sings on the highway and I believe him. the whole thing is metal inside though so I bet my bumpy dirt road sounded like rocks in a dryer.

that powerplant though, he opened the hood and was expecting a SBC, or something else everybody-does-it, and geeked out on the datsun with mikuni sidedrafts.

yeah he is a dynamite human being too, so he has that going for him.

I picked up the forklift last week, I opted for the adult option and hired a tow truck to haul it the 2.9 miles to my house. sure I have a nice steel deck car trailer and a 2500HD, but something told me to pay the 90 bucks.

and good thing, because my brother in law texted when I arrived with the tow truck that the propane hose that had worked for the last 12 years broke RIGHT THEN. I wasnt allowed in (hard hat, plus the wrong side of the building for visitors) and they tried valiantly to repair the line with hose clamps (which didnt work for 3000 reasons). I felt pretty good about calling for a tow because he largely ignored the 8000 lbs of inertness and just bebopped it up on the deck with the winch.

I JUST missed a shot of the tow truck with the front wheels 3 feet off the ground when he was unloading, I was backing away from the truck like that 4th of July my wifes family bought 6" OD fireworks and and launched them from a 6" OD pipe, he didnt even notice till it went KABOOM, just like that 4th. I fixed the line at Parker and my wife got it stuck in the front yard. I said "dont drive in the grass" but apparently I didnt tell her the right way because she didnt immediately understand why driving it in the grass ONLY A LITTLE was bad, so my fault. that would seem to be enough fun for the day but nope, I lifted everything that was in the driveway including the next donor truck, then tucked it away for the time being.

more interior. I bought a headliner but anyone who has messed with the cardboard headliners knows what fun they are to install, with all the compound curves. I had some black kydex (lets be honest I buy kydex every time I go to the yard store, its awesome stuff) but because I left it outside the string it was tied with made a wrinkle. I tried to get it out with a heat gun, but just pushed it around a while before giving up. I had some nice grey kydex and actually that one turned out nice, but cooler heads prevailed (it was either paint it black or leave it grey and neither really made an appealing choice to me).

so I fought the cardboard. it. _sucked_. turns out that being a 1942 truck meant that a 1941 headliner did not fit and it did not have the center bow for the 1946 headliner. so the headliner actually needed a lot of trimming especially over the doors? very strange.
I also had to pull the wiper cowl because on the LAST truck I didnt and all the hidden squirrel mess would blow in your face when you had the windshield open. see? LEARNING.

I wanted the headlight harnesses to be unspliced but the factory hole in the fender was too far back. there was a more convenient hole in the doubler but not the fender, so I just drilled it. perf.

its a chipboard headliner from bowtie bits. I use them on all these trucks, and the last 41 was a mother and a half. I knew what I was in for. in retrospect it might have been easier to start from the back, instead of the front. I will try it that way next time if hell ever freezes over or I have a big traumatic brain injury that makes me forget these trucks.

to install it you form it and then those strips with the shiny screws hold it. speaking of the shiny screws, half of my day today was taking out the rusty clutch head screws in all those strips. the process is: 1. try clutch head bit 2. strip clutch head in screw 3. grind slot in clutch head screw 4. try unsuccessfully 60% of the time to remove screw with flathead screwdriver. 5. carefully grind off clutch head screw head. 6. remove stub of screw shaft with vice grips. if it seems like its taking a long time, apply swearing liberally.


oh I got the windshield and regulator in. I should be able to button up the interior except the gauges tomorrow.

its got a chevy 4 cylinder! I will give it a high solids enamel paint job sometime this summer but thats about it.

carpet today. I ran out of spray adhesive or this would be done. the s10 shift boot looks terrible too, so I guess I will pick up one from speedway. I sealed the removable parts of the floor in with some peel and seal, so that if it ever needs a clutch it will be easy peasy.

3M super 77, I use it to hold the jute mainly but I also spritz it on the back of the carpet too.

ahh the lack of updates. see, what happened is, it got warmer here and we have new kittens who arent allowed outside yet, or in the garage. so instead of working with the garage door closed and the door to the house open (letting the ac permeate) I have been instead working with the house door closed and the garage doors open. when I got the big fan from under the welding table I forgot the big chunk of 11ga leaning against it and it fell on my foot, turning three toes the most impressive shades of purple. my wife, who likes to play the part of a contrarian to any assertion I make, disagreed that the smallest one was actually broken, and was not impressed by my limping and groaning about so slight an injury. so to show her up in fine style I hobbled around like a sandbagging cripple faker until I absentmindedly kicked the training wheel on the youngest childs new bicycle, breaking the little toe for absolute certain this time. all part of my master plan, says the wife.

I did manage to go to the swap meet this weekend. despite passing up two verifiable deals right away (more on that later) I had a better time than this guy was likely to. everyone in the oncoming lane was flashing their lights so I slowed down, and he came cruising by. luckily he realized his mistake, no scary aftermath. click for vid.

so the first deal I passed up was a 55-59 GMC shortbed for $250. no fenders, but it had a nice GMC tailgate and my next truck is a GMC. wrong year but I could have made it work. still kicking myself. the second was a rusty 41 cab with a nice rear window diecast piece and winshield regulator for $250. those two parts are $350 on ebay. but I need another 41 like a hole in the head.

I did get a nice GMC 4 bar grille and a 64-66 chevy grille for $20 each.

lights! this was a real sticky one for me, I wired, and wanted, the roof lights to be on steady for parking lights and blink with the turn signals, but stay the 5w single filament bulbs. I couldnt use the LEDS I bought for the front turn signals even though they looked AWESOME when on. so I found a pair of working bulbs and eventually got all the lights working as intended.

got the new rad fan in and installed too. the friction ties that came with the rad turned out to be made of chiniesium, so I got a set of haydens and installed the fan.

You're making awesome progress.

I have missed every swap meet in Hutch in the last 5 years. Every time I think I'm going to make it, there is something else going on that I MUST do.

I haven't posted in a while, so I'll try and catch up! I dig the panel, and I like that it is something different, true hot rodding at its core, but not for me. If its still going to be a 6cyl I'll take a warmed 235 with split manifolds every day!

That headliner turned out great...I've got one to put in the '49 that I've been dragging my feet on.

The lights turned out nice, the carpet looks good, and glad you got the forklift home!
